  • "Location ideal, great situation for exploring the local area."

Felt secure with gated parking for our car and comfortable with security for our small dog

  • "Good location however the property is not dog secure and there is really no safe secure place for dogs at all so this should not be advertised as suitable for dogs."

The property is very old and tired and in need of renovation. All the windows need to be replaced one window is broken and will not stay shut. There is no sound proofing between floors so it is a very noisy property also it looked as if a tile had come off the roof which needs to be fixed. In addition the front door does not feel very secure. This property was very expensive but it did not justify the price.

  • "A lovely property in a great location."

Very well equipped and with comfortable beds and garden furniture. Sofas and arm chair look ok but springing seems worn so not as comfortable as they look. Steps inside and out not the easiest to negotiate. The worst thing for us was the parking. More information should be given about this BEFORE booking. Had I seen the info we received after we had paid before we did so I probably would not have booked. The spaces are incredibly tight. On one occasion during our stay a neighbour had to come and ask me to move my car (which was parked in accordance with instructions) so that she could get into hers. The only way I could get into my driving seat was by climbing over from the passenger side (luckily the car normally parked at that side was not in situ at the time).

  • "The standout feature of this property is without a shadow of a doubt - it’s location to the old harbour!"

Simply fantastic, and with secure parking it’s just great (yes the parking spot is a little tight, but the other drivers are very courteous). The house itself is very nicely laid out. The photos don’t really do it justice. The open plan layout is lovely and the rooms are all a very good size. A couple of bits need fixing/touching up, but these are nothing that would affect your stay (as mentioned in other reviews, the bedroom blinds are more for privacy than keeping the light out, so take some eye masks). We had a couple of issues that were fixed extremely quickly. Good pressure in the taps/shower, although the kitchen could use a boost as it takes a while to fill the kettle. Our only slight down point on this property, is that the walls and ceilings are very thin! You must appreciate it’s an old property, but you can hold a conversation with someone upstairs from the living room without raising your voice. That wasn’t an issue for us, but might be worth considering if you have a large group. On the whole we would definitely come back, if only for the location! Lots of great restaurants and bars a stones throw away (most of which are dog friendly too!). Try Cactus Jacks’ chilli challenge if you dare - it nearly killed me, but was just another great memory of our trip to the Gables!

  • "House was in an excellent location just minutescfrom the Harbour."

Great to have parking too. The House was very dusty everywhere. 5pm check in is later than most cottages and they certainly don't spend the time cleaning! Several bulbs were not working, TV remote in bedroom did not work and the batteries were rusted so been thatcway a long time! Also quite a bad leak on the toilet in the bathroom upstairs. Main downfalls were the blinds in the upstairs bedrooms where no better than net curtains. You can see through them from outside at night and you are woken up at daybreak with the light shining right on you in all three upstairs rooms. Finally there is no soundproofing in the entire building. You can hear a conversation in the living room from the bedroom and vice versa. The floors make such a noise it is impossible to move without disturbing the rest of the House.. Everything echos! Finally the adjacent building was having plumbing work carried out. Drills and hammering from 6.45am was a bit much the last two mornings of our stay. The House is in a great location, great to have parking, lovely little courtyard garden but no privacy at all. I wouldn't stay again. Bad blinds, terrible noise transfer between rooms and buildings. Our first stay in a dreams cottage but with have had many breaks with Sykes. Cleaning poorest we have encountered. Apart from changing beds I don't think they do anything!

Thank you for your feedback. We are sorry to read that certain aspects of the property were not to your liking. Our offices are open 7 days a week and we offer a 24 hrs out of hours service to our guests if they have any concerns relating to their stay. Due to the age of the building, before soundproofing guest may find the property echoey or a bit creaky which all adds to the character. We are happy you enjoyed your stay overall and decided to extend your holiday whilst at the property. Once again, thank you for taking the time in forwarding your feedback and we hope to welcome you back to Dorset very soon. Property Owner

  • "The thermostat in the hall was arcane with not much in the way of help notes."

Some of the plumbing was a bit dodgy. The sink in the downstairs loo didn't work and the hot tap in the bathroom needed a strong hand to prevent it dripping. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . The BT internet connection was excellent one of the best we've had in Weymouth. Well equipped kitchen with plenty of plates and cutlery, especially large knives. Also good to have a decent bread-bin. Beds very comfortable with ample towels etc. Lastly the general access to the parking and property were difficult. I understand we were told it wasn't disabled friendly but still not a great feature of the property.

This is much appreciated. I am aware that there is a washer/dryer available for clothes washing but would it be possible to have a washing line in the courtyard area where no one can see so some items could be hung out to dry/to get the sand off ect before putting in the machine, as aware not to put out the front. We love the Gables and it suits are needs perfectly. Thank you

  • "The Gables is comfortable, well maintained and very well equipped property."

As a family of 6 we found the house to be large enough to accommodate all of us comfortably. It was clean and the bedding and towels supplied were very clean and of a good quality. And the kitchen had everything (and more) that we needed. We loved the fact it was situated so close to the harbour and town. Just a walk out of the gate. The only downside was the parking. There is only parking for one car. As we had booked a minivan for us all to travel comfortably we were not able to park in the designated parking bay. One phone call to Dorset Council and we had a parking ticket (£38) that lasted us for the whole week. It covered every long stay car park In Weymouth, Portland and Chessil Beach, so we parked at the Norte Forte car park over night. Just a 2 minute walk away from the house. £38 well spent. If coming back to Weymouth, we would certainly book The Gables again.

The cleanliness of the house could have been a lot better. The wooden floors especially downstairs were very sticky on the foot, didn't look like it had been washed at all. The patio doors were not wiped clean, smudges & bird poo on glass which we had to clean off & outside the patio ground was not washed clean, could not sit out there at all & the window of the house could also have been wiped clean. Upstairs windows would not stay open, had to put a cushion on ledge to keep window open.

About the location

Dorchester 8.7 miles; West Lulworth 15.8 miles

Brewers Quay is the old Victorian brewery situated at the heart of the harbour, in Weymouth, Dorset. Much of the grade II listed complex and surrounding brewery buildings date from the late 1800 early 1900’s and many have stones inlaid commemorating their construction year. This area is now a popular destination with many restaurants, café and bars, creating a vibrant culture, where you can relax with a drink and watch the world go by. Tucked away down the harbourside streets, you will find original Tudor harbour buildings, estimated to have been built in 1600 and well worth a visit, with a very interesting history to share. You will also find the Weymouth Museum, with some incredible exhibitions, and the harbour is also home to the lifting bridge, where you can watch the luxury yachts head out to sea, and then walk over the bridge to the town's winding streets of boutique shops and the seafront esplanade and beach. There is more to this seaside town than meets the eye; Brewers Quay is a much-loved holiday destination in Weymouth!
