It’s spectacular! So tranquil, beautiful watching the sun rise and sunset! Lovely large property. A bit dated but had everything you need. Driveway was too small for the car, so had to park on road opposite. It was harder to park at weekends, but we always got a space near enough. The beach which is 2 minutes walk from the house was perfect, great sand and lovely calm crystal clear water. We had a wonderful holiday! Already tried to book again but the week is booked already!

It is a real gem, spacious, comfortable, well equipped and views to die for. Although there was only the two of us staying here, the facilities are more than adequate for five people. The location is also a real plus, with the coastal path and Rodwell Trail on the doorstep.

The house was very clean, warm and well fitted. The views over the sea are stunning. What we did not like was the smell of mold, esp. near the bed in the small bedroom and when you opened the cupboards in the kitchen. Perhaps a lack of ventilation and/ or heating ?

  • "We have stayed at Rainbows many many times."

It has been our bolt hole when we need to come to Dorset and refuge after stressful times. We love it. It is always spotlessly clean and the view from the house is wonderful. There is everything you need in the house. There are some things that do need to be mentioned though by Sykes. The parking is really only for a small car (we have a Honda Civic and it only just fits). Because of all the building work going on elsewhere up the road and it is major work, and the nice weather, the road was very busy when we were there. Parking was at a premium. It is not easy to get on the drive when camper vans and 'tanks' are parked in the road directly opposite the house. I guess we were just unlucky a lot of the time. Older people and children need to be aware that there are a lot of stairs to go upstairs (more than in my house and steeper) and there is no handrail on one side. A 'pigs ear' handrail would be a great bonus and probably save hands going on the walls on the way down. The step over into the bath/shower is quite high and there are no grab rails. For the first time I did struggle this holiday with the stairs and the bath/shower. Also the TV etc. is only as good as the Wi-Fi service and I am afraid Talk Talk failed miserably for a lot of the week so no TV certain nights. They had a major outage for a few days. However, that is not the owners fault. When we got there, the house book said to press TV Guide on the remote and pick a channel. Yes the list comes up but that doesn't work because there is no aerial, hence no signal. It did take us a while to find out how to work the TV and find channels. Our daughter helped us eventually via a phone call.! OK, we are dinosaurs ! That said we had a wonderful week, the weather was kind to us and we came home relaxed and happy and will no doubt return next year sometime for sure. Please thank Geoff and Clare for us for letting us have a lovely much needed holiday in their lovely holiday home.

Only a short trip to Weymouth for the shops and seafront, far enough away to ensure quiet evenings and nights. Property clean and well presented, a pleasurable week. Only complaint the adverised dvd player was absent, annoying when you are old school.

The pictures on the Drean Cottages webpage speak for themselves. The house is very comfortable to live in and for us is in an ideal position for visiting both Weymouth and Portland. I don't think there is anywhere quite like Portland and in many ways it is more interesting than Weymouth. The cottage is ideally place for ship watching and there are many more cruise ships using Portland Port. Parking at the cottage can be a bit difficult but if you get there early it's easy to walk into Weymouth whilst the cottage is being prepared. It is just possible to park on the drive even with a family car.

It is also well located for walking. The house is spacious and nicely furnished, only let down by not having a walk-in shower. The bath is particularly deep and could prove a problem for older and infirmed visitors. I have a VW Golf, which I was just able to park on the drive. A larger car than this would have to be parked on what is a quiet no through road. Despite these minor points, this is a truly excellent property in which to spend a holiday.

  • "We had an enjoyable stay."

The weather overall was kind for the time of year and the views from the back of the house were interesting across the harbour to Portland. The Roswell trail was easily accessed and walks in both directions were interesting, about 20mins to Weymouth and 10mins to Chesil beach and the coastal path. The property was reasonably equipped and the recovered sofas looked good. The driveway parking was too small for our car, so we parked on the road outside with no problems.

Thanks for your positive feedback and we are pleased you enjoyed your holiday. We accept your niggle regarding the sofa covers. We have been waiting for new covers to be manufactured for some time and have now been promised they will be with us by Christmas! Property Owner

Castle Cove has a nice quiet beach, just two minutes down the road and it is easy to walk into Weymouth either on part of the coastal path or the Rodwell Trail. We took two cars but always managed to park easily on the road. There is lots to do in the area and we particularly enjoyed visits to the Swannery at Abbotsbury (as well as looking round the picturesque village) and to Lulworth Cove and Durdle Door. It is located on a quiet no through road yet only 20 minutes walk from the harbour at Weymouth along the traffic free Rodwell Trail. The house was spotlessly clean with new carpets, bedding etc. It felt totally COVID safe. We were lucky with the weather and enjoyed glorious sea views from the garden, lounge and bedrooms. The views day and night really were exceptional. There is a small sandy beach at the end of the road which would be ideal for small children. Would recommend this accommodation wholeheartedly.

  • "The property experienced an outstanding view from the rear aspect."

A lovely location out of the rat race of Weymouth. However easily walkable to the town. Sandsfoot Castle and gardens with a delightful cafe were just a few steps away. Parking for a medium size car off road was a plus; a larger car can be accommodated on the minor road, only busy on a weekend. The house itself was very clean and comfortable. The amazing views across Portland harbour from the dining / lounge are wonderful. The bedrooms (2 with views of the harbour) are all very clean and comfortable. The Rodwell Trail (old railway line) is on the doorstep and offers a traffic free walk into Weymouth, around 1.5 miles. The coastal walk into Weymouth via Norte Castle is delightful. A big thank you to the owners for allowing this property to be shared. One general comment: as we use your booking site regularly, it would be helpful if possible to show driveway dimensions on all your properties where vehicle size may be an issue.

The cottage was in a lovely location, not too far from the main town but out far enough not to be disturbed, we were in a cul-de-sac with a lovely small almost private beach at the bottom of the road then just up the road a beautiful little park, which also had a ruined castle. The cottage itself was fantastic, very spacious, very clean and had everything we needed including an absolutely stunning view from the french windows in the back of the house looking over the sea and on to Portland. We would have absolutely no hesitation in recommending this cottage or Sykes for all their help and communication and are looking to book up again somewhere else for next year.

  • "Property had a excellent sea view across the harbour which you could look at all day, and Portland lit up at night."

The location was excellent, just 5-10 minutes walk to small sandy beach but not too crowded, everyone keeping 2 metres distance. There are quite a few steps down to beach and no facilities. 2 mins walk to castle and gardens with small café serving ice creams etc. although got busy due to nice weather. We did have to use the internet a lot to find out about places to visit and eat out in the evening, as there is limited information in the property, understandable due to current situations (virus). If eating out, you need to book a table in most circumstances and it is best to check with them what is on the menu, as we found that restaurants had a reduced menu, but not advertised on their websites. Our party was 4 adults, so we had taken with us card games etc., but a family with small children would need to remember to take their own games, toys, DVDs as there are none in the property. Parking on the road outside the property gets very busy from about 8am - 5pm as the property is 2mins walk from another small private beach, so you will need to park on space in front of house. You just need to be prepared when visiting attractions that you may need to wear a mask, have your temperature checked, keep 2 metre distance and follow one way systems. Best advice, always make sure you have a mask to hand. Overall we had a lovely relaxing holiday.

But unfortunately the house seemed quite run down, with grubby carpets, visibly dirty cutlery and tables, spiderwebs everywhere. On the upside, the beds seemed clean. We also had to buy a lot of basic stuff, since we only got 2 tabs for the dishwasher and 0 for the washing machine, for 1 week. Actually, everything was counted: garbage bags, even toilet paper. This gave a rather unwelcoming impression. I really hate having to give a bad review, but I cannot really recommend this house, especially not to families with small children who like to play on the floor.

About the location

CASTLE COVE

Weymouth 2.1 miles; Dorchester 8.8 miles; Lyme Regis 28.5 miles.

Castle Cove is a firm favourite with locals, sitting alongside the Rodwell trail area, Castle Cove Beach is usually uncrowded, and offers safe bathing from its gently sloping shoreline. There are two main beach areas, Castle Cove, new steps to the beach opened early in 2019, and Sandsfoot beach, both with soft golden sand and the vibe of the best kept secret. Sandsfoot castle is just two minutes’ walk from the beach where you will find castle ruins, pretty, award-winning gardens and a small café, offering snacks, drinks and ice-creams. Accessed off Old Castle Road in Weymouth, this area is a real treat for those who want to be away from the buzz and bright lights of the traditional Weymouth Seafront, and yet close enough to venture there when they choose. When you are on the beach you could be forgiven for thinking you are miles from town, and yet you are only within easy reach of the old Harbour and access to Weymouth town centre. If you want to know where the locals would recommend you spend your beach days, then Castle Cove and Sandsfoot beaches are it.

Note. Off-street parking space for medium car, unrestricted free street parking in Old Castle Road subject to availability.
Note: Guests to provide their own cot bed linen.
