  • "The cottage was as expected, but the track to it was awful, and the parking was very difficult, could easily wreck tyres and suspension, while I appreciate the warning about the track it was extremely difficult getting cases and provisions to and from the cottage and very dangerous exiting the track onto the road ."

..on the info there is a telephone number for the owners ...but there isn't a mobile signal there .....we liked the cottage but the .acces is terrible

  • "For us Washing Pools was an excellent property."

Just the right size and with good facilities for two people and a dog. Great views down over fields to the sea. If you enjoy walking, peace and quiet, and a few hills, then this is the place for you. There are local pubs and at West Bexington beach there is the 'Club House Restaurant'. The nearest proper shop is in Abbotsbury or Burton Bradstock. Also, a very good farm shop at Modbury Farm. Bridport is not far away. We enjoyed some lovely short walks with our dog - Rolo. Plus Abbotsbury Gardens and Portland Bill.

  • "We ignored the few bad reviews, noted that some people have been staying for 12 and 15yrs, took a few essentials, loo roll, tea towel etc, a bag of logs - and needed none of them!"

A very comfortable stay in a warm, well equipped, and clean cottage, so a big thank you to all involved in proving an ideal place to get away from city life. We hope to visit again in summer, although even in February and the company of Storm Dudley one day, we were able to visit many local places of interest including Abbotsbury. Thank you again.

  • "My husband and I have been going to the Washingpools Cottage since 2012."

This time around the management of the cottage was very poor, in term of cleanliness and basic equipment available. A dream cottage agent came to assess my complaint and agree that due to Covid, they were no time for propel cleaning, basic inventory and past guests probably stealing items. Very poor management indeed.

I know from years of staying at Washing Pools (over 15 years) sometimes a couple of times a year to bring this stuff with me but it must annoy other guests.

  • "The actual accommodation/location and quirkiness of the property was superb, but i would suggest that a shower curtain be put up in the bathroom as the water soaks everything and gets everywhere, and the curtains in the bedroom could do with some new hooks and hung properly and finally the 2 seater picnic table needs attention as im sure in not the distant future the seat will break on someone when sitting on it Let downs."

.... just plain Dirty... i appreciate it will never be spotless but to be told by dream cottages you cannot check into the property until 5 o'clock due to cleaning/changeover etc then i would expect it to be fairly clean and checked ready for the next clients... we spent an hour or so cleaning.. i mean the leather sofa was dirty and sticky, the inside of all the cupboards were filthy which in turn made the plates/cups sticky (due to the mess that we wiped out i do not think this has been cleaned for months), various cutlery was left in the draw dirty A fabulous stay which could of been an exceptional stay if the house keeping was up to scratch.

  • "A lovely hideaway!"

I've been before, and I would stay again. The lounge/dining area is very comfortable with a great sea view. The kitchen is well equipped. The bedroom is cosy with limited storage but adequate for a small stay. The bathroom would benefit from a shower curtain to keep spray off the toilet etc. The outside area is great, and I love that it opens onto a field, with access to the beach. I would have liked a parasol for the patio table. Be aware this property allows pets so there may be a bit of dog hair and dog smell left over - hard for even the best cleaning regime to get rid of!

  • "This very tiny but perfect cottage has the most amazing views and setting."

From the approach through a market garden and orchard to arrive over the small bridge into the delightful garden with views over Chesil beach right along to Golden Cap and Lyme Regis. The 5 minute walk to the sea over mown paths was delightful. After three months of lockdown this place was such a tonic. Inside it is quite simple but well considered and unobtrusive and comfortable. It is not high luxury but just what you need for a quiet retreat. We loved the fact that there was no WiFi- at last a break from the zoom screen. The bedroom though really sweet with windows on two sides is very small indeed- more like a chalet..Again the views from the sofa and the wood burning stand out as highlights. We had such a lovely peaceful and joyous time and will definitely be back.

  • "If you want to be far from the madding crowd then this cottage is for you."

Us and our two doggies had a fabulous week. We felt at home as soon as we arrived. Just set the fire, enjoy a walk on Chesil beach and then come back light the fire and watch the sun set over the sea from the cottage windows. No need to venture much furthur. Perfect. For me, a wool addict, an added bonus was the organic wool grown on the farm for sale at the farm shop.

  • "A wonderful, cute, and cosy little cottage."

Perfect for a couple and their pooch. Beautiful location, quiet and off the beaten track, with fantastic view of Chesil beach. V comfortable bed and decent shower. The sofa was V comfortable, but a bit strange that it was in 3 parts, and would sometimes drift apart from each other. Overall, we loved staying at Washingpools, and would definitely stay there again, and recommend to others. Thank you.

  • "We have stayed at Washingpools for many years."

Recent changes to the property have not been positive. The doors to the bathroom and bedroom do not latch. There are no shelves in the bathroom for toiletries any more. When we arrived, storm Alex was with us, we wanted to light the stove but no logs available. We tried phoning Dream Cottages for some assistance on this, but no reply. Tamarisk Farm is organic and in previous years there was recycling of rubbish and a compost bin for vegetable waste, but no more. The farm has a shop, but there is no mention of this in the visitor information book and it directs you to a farm shop on the other side of Bridport. It seems the cottage has been divorced from the rest of the farm, which is a shame. The location and views are still wonderful and hopefully can't be spoilt, so we will be returning.

  • "We have been to Washingpools before, so knew what we were going go get, but weren't sure how Coronavirus was going to affect our stay."

As it happened, very little - all amenities were still there, including toilet roll, kitchen roll, bin bags, towels and duvet/pillow case covers, cushions for the sofa, so we didn't feel this was any different to other holidays.. The only minor difference was a slightly later check in time of 5pm rather than 3pm to allow more cleaning time - no great hardship (and no change to check-out time of 10am). The place is exactly as described online, combined living room/kitchen with a magnificent sea view, wet room/toilet with shower, and a bedroom with a very comfortable double bed. Duvet was a winter one and the weather was red hot, but the week before had been the coldest August bank holiday ever, so this is completely understandable. As to the local area, the local hotel and cafe are still open for business, and happy to have visitors. The surrounding towns (Bridport/Weymouth/Lyme Regis) were all busier than usual for the second week in September, but we put this down to more people staycationing.. Having said that, the location of Washingpools at the bottom of a market garden, in a village with only one road in (which stops at the sea) is an ideal place for (self) isolation - we could easily have seen no-one for the entire week if we'd have stayed in and around the cottage. All in all, Washingpools in West Bexington is still a brilliant destination for a couple with or without a dog (any more may feel a little cramped).

  • "Washingpools is described as being off the beaten track and that's what it is."

It's small and cosy but more than big enough for 2 adults and a labrador. It's secluded and has a perfect view of the sea. A short walk over the fields gets you to the beach. Its location couldn't be better really. There's loads to do in the area... Bridport/West Bay/Lyme Regis/Abbotsbury were all favourites. We found the cottage had everything you need and would recommend it. The ONLY downside to a week in Dorset in August when the weather is sunny is wasps and you can't do much about them. Great week away, great cottage.

  • "We spent a fantastic time at the Washingpools."

We found it easily, Location is georgeous and the cottage itself is lovely. The equipment is a bit basic, but not a problem at the end. But unfortunately, it wasn't too clean. Carpets and sofa were found filthy and the location smells of "wet dog coat". Sorry to say that, we're not meant to complain, but that was unfortunately remarkable.

  • "The setting was perfect."

The cottage was cosy, everything we needed was there including vases which was perfect for our beautiful flowers we were given for our 40th wedding anniversary, which we celebrated whilst we were on our holiday. We would not hesitate to come back again hopefully this year but definitely next year. It was a little piece of heaven. Our dog really enjoyed her stay as well, walks everywhere came home for a rest. Only negative was the sofa had a mind of its own, when you put the leg rest out you had to remember when you went to get up you had to sit up slowly and push legs down slowly or you would be catapulted forward giving my husband great amusement each time it happened.(Laughing as I am remembering this.)We would like to thank you for a wonderful stay. We will always remember our 40th anniversary because of this beautiful place. Mr and Mrs Ashanollah and Cheyenne our dog.

About the location

Abbotsbury 3 miles; Bridport 6 miles.

Lying next to the sea and Chesil Beach, equidistant between Burton Bradstock and Abbotsbury, is the small village of West Bexington. This is a stunning area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, as well as an area of Special Scientific Interest - pebbled Chesil Beach, which extends for 14 miles, from Burton Bradstock to the Portland peninsula, is part of the Jurassic Coast and now a World Heritage Site. Fishermen and walkers are well provided for, as a great variety of fish can be caught at any time of year, and the South West Coastal Path runs right alongside the beach. Only confident swimmers should attept to swim here, but Weymouth, offering lovely, gently shelving sands, is only a short drive away. There's lots to see and do within easy reach of the village. No journey to this area would be complete without a visit to picturesque Abbotsbury, 3 miles, with its Swannery, Tithe Barn and Sub Tropical Gardens, with Dorchester, Bridport, and Lyme Regis all within easy reach.

Region Information

Note: no WiFi.
Note: whilst part of Washingpool's charm is being 'off the beaten track' and surrounded by countryside, please be aware that the access is quite literally off the beaten track! There is a short drive of 2-3 minutes down a private road which is bumpy and unmade in places. The last 20 yards from the parking area is on foot down a concrete slope to a small metal walkway over a pretty little stream and then a few steps across grass to the front door. Please do not deviate from the concreted area as you may get stuck in the mud.
Note: please take care when turning your car, there is a bump in the concrete paving and grass opposite so stay on the paved area whilst turning.
Note: we advise arriving in daylight to find the access lane and onward to the property. Please bring a torch if arriving in the dark.
