High Auchenbrack

On arrival we found the cottage to be warm and homely.

Beds were comfortable and linen fresh and clean. The location is amazing with no light pollution and you could hear a “pin drop” it was so peaceful. It was lovely to watch the sheep with their lambs. The furnishings were a little dated though, the settee was low and not too comfortable. Having read previous reviews where complaints were made about the cooker, there was a new cooker in the kitchen albeit an old fashioned cooker hob. Another oven tray would have been useful but overall we found the kitchen to be well equipped for our purposes. The bathroom would benefit from a renovation, but that said I enjoyed a bath with plenty of hot water. Overall we were pleased with the cottage and its location and would recommend it if you are looking for peace and tranquility and a cozy bolt hole.

This was a return visit to High Auchenbrack for us.

Our dog and us love the location as it's just beautiful, so quiet & peaceful. It is rural and you absolutely need to drive to go anywhere. The beds are comfy with good linen and plenty of towels provided. Large TV, comfy sofa and warm on a cold, wet evening with a log fire if needed but the gas heating is ample. The kitchen & bathroom is a bit tired and dated but it is clean and functional so can't really fault it. We will definitely be booking again for a 3rd visit next year.

The What3Words was for the house. The living room and bedrooms were nice and comfy. The living room had a nice log burner with a starter kit for wood etc..., TV, comfy seating and wifi. The bedrooms were comfy with enough storage space. The heating was easy to control and kept the place warm (we were there in winter and it snowed). Unfortunately, the kitchen and bathroom really let the place down. The kitchen equipment was broken, damage and often unusable. This had a big impact on the holiday overall. The bathroom was not very clean and had mould on the ceiling. Real difference to the rest of the place really. However, it was a nice little cottage and the garden area was as expected.

The place was clean and tidy on arrival.

But at night we could hear mice chewing and scuttling, and one morning the floor in one bedroom was strewn with droppings.

Lovely stay, lovely walks from the door (even in the November weather!

). This was our third stay here, and we do intend to visit again.

Stayed as a couple with a dog.

Such a lovely and cosy place, but wasn't quite as well equipped as some we've stayed at. For instance, there was no handsoap or a welcome pack for house instructions which I see as the very basics. Very comfy beds and the heating works so well. It's also deceptively large inside and the garden was loved by our dog. I would suggest some chicken wire along the bottom of the fence though, as small dogs could squeeze under in parts if they really wanted to. Although the cottage is right on the road, it's such a small quiet lane so you still feel nice and isolated. We loved our holiday and enjoyed coming back to the cottage after our hikes.

Very quiet and peaceful area, ideal place to stay if you want peace and quiet.

Accommodation very cosy, but needing a little updating and decorating. Listing stated a dishwasher but there wasn't one. An information pack, saying about doctors, vets and supermarkets would be useful.

The location is excellent, very remote and no artificial noise, just nature.

The house is very nice, comfortable and spacious with a log burner which I like. Due to it being a dark sky area you can see almost every star possible after dark, it's is great. The only problem it was cloudy most nights but I got a small glimpse. The beds are very comfortable as well. The only downside really is the kitchen and bathroom which I feel could do with some modernisation and some newer pots and pans as most looked a bit worn. Overall though the stay was great and I would definitely stay again. Thanks

Lovely cottage ideal location could do with a new cooker bottom oven not working and a new kettle brown inside could do with a water filter jug lovely walks traffic a bit busy early morning had a lovely stay apart from a few niggles

We enjoyed our stay , I feel for the price some facilities could be updated , wardrobes could be put in , instead of the thing on the wall where you just hang clothes .

Furniture was very old although beds were comfortable.. wardrobes that wee in had shelves in and looked dusty so we didn’t use them . Bathroom had mould in some of the tiles definitely needs a doing again

Quite remote and no immediate neighbours with beautiful scenery around- which is exactly what I wanted.

Need to drive along a single track road for 15 -20 mins to get to it, but still has ready access to main roads and shops. Not a problem in summer/daylight if you don’t mind reversing to nearest passing place if you meet another car (happened to me only 2-3 of times the whole week I was there), but might be more difficult in the dark or in winter. Property is right on the road but traffic is very light. Maybe 1 car every 20-30 mins or so (at the very most) and virtually none in the evening or at night. Property could do with a bit of a makeover and fresh decor but fundamentally is great if you are not looking for luxury and want some real peace and quiet.

A beautiful, quiet location.

The local area is just lovely. The cottage had all the basics that I needed.

The cottage is beautiful and in a stunning location.

There is a logging operation going on at the moment and the traffic moves frighteningly fast given that the access road is a three mile long single track. There is no information folder in the cottage to tell you about local doctors, restaurants or vets ( given that it is dog friendly), no information about check out procedure, do they want the bed stripping or not. Equipment is plentiful including a washing machine for which you do of course need to take your own pods. The garden had not had the grass cut which was a shame but it was in such a picturesque area. The local sheep were a joy to watch, they were frequently out of the field and on the road. The biggest issue with this cottage is the lack of decent housekeeping. The bedrooms and lounge were clean and the beds were very comfortable. The kitchen and bathroom left a lot to be desired though. There were baking/cooking trays in the oven that were in an appealing state, rusty and grimy and I had to wash the frying pan before I could use it. The bathroom was in a poor state, there is lots of mould around the window, the seal on the shower screen needs replacing and the grouting above the bath needs scrubbing. There is also a gap outside of the bath where it meets the floor and it just looked filthy. Even in a cottage that old it can be kept clean and refreshed. I have still given a four star review because of the area being so beautiful but I wouldn't stay at this particular cottage again unless I saw that these things had been addressed.

Beautiful cottage in a beautiful setting.

Absolutely loved our stay at High Auchenbrack that we booked again for next May. Good sized secure garden for our large dog who loved watching the sheep and lambs. Cottage has most things you need but you will need to bring tea towels, iron & a hairdryer as these are not provided. The beds are really comfy with good linen and pillows, plenty of towels provided and the welcome pack with tea, coffee & biscuits is a lovely touch and some toiletries he provided too. Plenty of hot water, good internet in the cottage but no phone service (tesco mobile) which isn't a bad thing as the rural location offers peace & tranquility which is what we were looking for. Plenty of walks around, you really do have to drive to get to most places but the scenery is beautiful so we didn't mind this at all. Looking forward to a return trip in May 2026.

Wonderful very quiet location.

Superb for walkers,cyclists & countryside lovers. Lots of wildlife on the doorstep, I loved hearing the cuckoos & watching the hares. Lovely walks up the glen, deer, warblers, red kites & buzzards. SWT nature reserve nearby & very handy for Drumlanrig Castle & Moniaive The cottage was clean & comfortable, really good beds & linen. The lane is single track with passing places so be prepared to reverse back into a space if needed. However very few cars/farm vehicles pass by. There's a good washing machine, I would have found a proper washing line useful. Maybe a local map & walk suggestions/places to visit.

Beautiful location and the cottage was lovely.

Very clean and practical and I would highly recommend it. It could do with an iron, a first aid kit and some more cooking pots for the oven as there was very limited dishes. A fridge freezer would be a good idea too as there are no nearby shops. A big thankyou to the owners who helped me out when I managed to lock myself out!

A lovely propery in a wonderful rural setting.

So peaceful. We would go again. Only minor tweak would be to replace the cooker. Other than that it was perfect.

Lovely location, peaceful and beautiful surroundings.

Really comfy beds and pillows with super cosy duvets. Very nice toiletries provided. Some radiators were a bit noisy, and some of the furnishings/flooring is in need of a bit of TLC, but overall this didn't impact on our enjoyment of the holiday.

Warm, welcoming, comfy & cosy.

The bedding, towels & toiltries are excellent quality & were very much appreciated. A couple of minor issues were resolved quickly by the owner. Thicker duvets or some blankets would have been appreciated & there was no hairdryer, which us unusual. That said, we hope to return & will recommend to others.

Perfect for people with dogs - very quiet location with miles of forest tracks to explore.

Cottage itself is a perfect size, well equipped and cosy. We've already booked again, that says it all really.

Absolutely loved our week here so much that we have booked again for a longer stay.

Exactly what we wanted and were looking for, especially the garden, defo the best selling part for us and our dog, who basically was in it from morning to night, loving life and the weather was great so we were also able to enjoy it, having a few bbqs and even took the paddling pool for our dog. Everything in house was working perfectly and the fire was just bliss at night. Only thing we were missing was a hoover, would have been so much easier to give the place a once over with that rather than a brush, especially if you have a dog that likes to rip apart his toys as the fluff is a nightmare

Beautiful and peaceful cottage with great views.

Nice clean beds, fluffy towels and some nice bathroom toiletries. Some reviews say it needs tlc, but I personally feel that it's a good stay for guests with dogs. The kitchen flooring is old, but my dog didn't slide about on it, as he would have done with laminate flooring!! Good for dark skies and delicious eggs to buy 10 minutes down the road.

This holiday cottage is in a beautiful setting.

We loved the little cottage and it’s position, it was perfect for our reactive dog, as it was so quiet, our only neighbours were of the fleecey kind (sheep) who our dog loved to watch safely from the enclosed garden. The cottage as lovely as it was, really could do with some TLC, it was comfy and cosy, but felt a little tired and grubby in places. Sadly there was no vacuum cleaner to use, only a mob and bucket and a very tired broom and dustpan. So much so, that on one of our trips out we brought our own, so we could give the cottage a good sweep through before we left, Overall this wouldn’t put us off staying again, but it would be really nice if it got that bit of TLC and a vacuum cleaner for the guests to use!

We had a lovely 4 nights at this peaceful, relaxing cottage, Garden great for the dog :)

A fabulous cottage and location for remote living.

I contacted managing agent regarding a few issues and these were either addressed immediately or were already in progress. If you're looking for pristine modern home you'll be disappointed, but for me I loved it. Yes, there are things to improve, but I hope it doesn't change too much - I'll be back.

The property location was wonderful however general maintenance of property in need of attention Light bulbs not working in two bedside lamps, handles not on wardrobe doors, black mould in kitchen and bathroom , kitchen and bathroom ceiling / tiles literally falling to bits , flaking paint and grouting , fridge unplugged with freezer defrosting water on floor and heating not on made place cold and took some time to warm through , there was no starter pack for log burner as per description

Great little property in an excellent location for walking and exploring Downside is the property was furnished and had very basic essentials….

. would definitely benefit from some tlc and adding more essentials items
