Bracken Holiday Cottage

Bracken Cottage Dalbeatie was excellent.

We both agreed that it was one of the best holiday properties we have stayed in, and we have taken around twenty in total over the years. Great kitchen, living room and bedrooms, two fine bathrooms and a lovely view from the outside sitting area. A wide and easy to park and manoeuvre driveway, just perfect. We were particularly impressed with the attention to detail viz the art and rugs and furniture. Lovely. We had a fine week and would strongly recommend Bracken Cottage and the Dalbeatie area to everyone.

So clean and comfortable. I was lucky to have amazing weather which meant evenings outside enjoying the fantastic views.

A lovely spacious cottage in a beautiful countryside location.

Very well equipped and furnished. The bed linen and towels were very good quality. Heated towel rails in the bathrooms a big plus. Only 25 minutes walk down the road to Sandyhills where there is a bus service running to Dumfies, Dalbeattie, Rockcliff and Kipford. We had no problem with this but a little surprised there was no welcome pack. No milk, bread, tea or coffee. Not even any salt and pepper. If there is no welcome pack then perhaps please say in the description.

Our third stay at this lovely cottage didn't disappoint.

So peaceful and everything needed is provided. A great base for touring this lovely part of Scotland with it's varied towns and villages. Saw a very wide variety of wildlife as well.

Excellent accommodation in a really beautiful area.

Lots of wildlife, loved watching the rabbits which are everywhere. Twenty minutes to the beach along the quiet lane and great walks along the coast. Will certainly look to return soon.

This was our second time here. Its enormous for 4 people and a bargain compared to the cabins further down the road. We walked to the beach at Sandyhills in about 25 minutes, so very close by car. The house is warm all the time, 2 big bathrooms with good towels; and a kitchen with all you need, as well as space to sit on the sofa/play games on the table. Alot of space at the front and chairs to sit out (altho' this was Feb so we left that). This year the bonus is that our data worked (it stopped just before the farm previously!) And there's now WiFi & a smart TV so you can watch the catch-up and log in to your accounts for films etc. Owners are on the farm so easy to get hold of. Fabulous house at a fabulous price.

Clean, comfortable, spacious, well maintained and appointed. A quiet retreat but with easy access to Dalbeattie for amenities.

Bracken Cottage is a hidden secret….

a superb cottage with all the amenities you should need. I cannot recommend it more… Hazel met us on arrival, and showed us round the converted horse barn (do not read anything into this), explaining how it all worked and where things were. We were then left to our own devices to tour the area. It was truly a home from home and will certainly be returning.

We had a wonderful festive break at this very cosy (warm) and spacious cottage with everything you could need.

The decor is beautiful. We arrived to a lovely welcome from Hazel, who was very friendly and helpful. Guests are given totally privacy but Hazel is on hand at the farmhouse if needed. We had lovely sunny and mild weather during our stay and the views from the cottage were amazing. We were also able to enjoy the patio with a glass of wine or two on Christmas Day! We did some lovely walks most days at Sandyhills beach and walked along the coast to Port O Warren which was lovely, to peacefully sit and watch the sunset on the little beach there. We also explored Kirkudbright, Rockliffe, Kippford and Dalbeattie. We left feeling very refreshed and totally relaxed from our blissful stay at Bracken Cottage. We will return in the future and would definitely recommend.

Spacious cottage in very scenic, quiet and peaceful surroundings.

Private parking and again, spacious. The cottage is tastefully and well equipped. We loved the upstairs lounge affording better views. A fault in the heating was dealt with immediately by the owner and resolved very quickly.

Beautiful accommodation, in a rural setting, very little traffic on adjacent lane, quiet and peaceful, totally separate from the working farm, the cottage is situated on.

We were blessed with glorious weather, which allowed us to make us of the patio furniture. Our only request would be, as a previous reviewer has indicated, a rail on the second flight of stairs, would have allowed my husband, who struggle’s with his mobility, access to the upstairs lounge, and a grab rail in the downstairs shower room would have made him feel more secure. However, this hasn’t deterred us from rebooking for next year.

We will defo be back to stay again in the future. We had a lovely stay and there was lots to do beaches, lovely deer Park, nature walks ect. Thank you very much for a lovely stay!

We chose this cottage due to its accessibility.

It was brilliant that there was a walk in shower and a ground floor bathroom, these are always the first things we look for as you’d be surprised how difficult they are to find. It was 80% there. I would suggest that a grab rail in the shower and maybe a seat would make it so much more appealing to disabled clients, as would a second bannister to the higher part of the stairs. I was able to make the stairs, just, but in the dining area downstairs a second chair/sofa would mean that everyone could sit downstairs comfortably. Other than that, there was nothing we would change the dishwasher was a boon, the cooker and fridge were fabulous, there was loads of space and the furniture and decor was sublime. We had plenty of towels and loo paper and cleaning products, we truly wanted for nothing. We were worried about noise from the business on site, but we heard nothing. It was lovely opening the patio doors and watching the swallows and listening to the horses and cows that were nearby. It was so peaceful I’d go back again tomorrow, especially if there was a grab rail in the shower.

Lovely cottage in a perfect location just what we needed.

Comfortable furnishings, everything provided for, plus new WiFi connection. Just a minor issue, the main oven door doesn’t close properly, so we used the smaller one. The seaside villages of Rockcliffe and Kippford are just a short drive away, both worth visiting, and Dalbeattie town wood is vertically on your doorstep. We already have another week booked, and can’t wait to return.

Has everything you could need for a great stay. Lovely and peaceful. Lots to see and do in the area.

It would be useful for 2 bins in the kitchen for recycling as it was a bit of a hassle having to separate everything at the outside bin and the kitchen knives could do with sharpening

A wonderful quite retreat in a beautiful setting.

The standard of the property is excellent.On arrival we were greeted by Hazel who informed us of local eateries etc and the location of the beach.A very spacious property more than adequate for us two.Ample parking and outside relaxation furniture. Although linked to the farm there is no interference from machinery etc. We loved seeing the horses and cattle in the adjacent paddocks especially “Tommy” the black and white very large horse.Well placed for exploration of Dumfries and Galloway.Apart from the initial greeting we were left to our own devices.We will be back.

This is an absolutely beautiful cottage; I would happily live there.

It has everything you need, including scales in the kitchen, which was fabulous for us. The host was friendly and polite, coming to check on us after an unexpected power cut on the first night. The beds were comfortable and everything was lovely and clean, thank you.

Absolutely fabulous cottage situated in a fantastic location for walking and local amenities.

In fact we have already booked to come back later in the year . We would have booked for next year but unfortunately the property does not appear to be available. A great shame! Nevertheless what a fantastic week!

This is our fourth February stay at Bracken Cottage which speaks for itself.

It is spacious, very clean, well maintained and tastefully decorated and furnished and well equipped.Toasty warm in winter. The recent addition of Wi-Fi was appreciated. Home from home, we could live here! This property is a credit to its owners.

Lovely place to stay amazing views, nice property.

Like another person said would have been nice to have a small starter pack milk, tea, coffee most places we have stayed there is always milk in the fridge. There is so much to do and see in this area, Dalbeattie has plenty of shops and a few pubs and restaurants.

Enjoyed the whole experience and would recommend it to anyone wishing to get away from it all.

A small welcome pack of milk /tea is always welcome especially in areas where shops are scarce .

And a few more basics like tea towels /and enough washing up liquid to last the stay /salt+pepper etc .It makes the first night easier and avoids an early morning search for the shops .

A wonderful hoilday home the views are beautiful lovely peace and quiet.

Hazel is a lovely host. The cottage is comfortable and very clean everything there that you need. Beds are really comfortable. Just one thing is I think the listing needs updating for reference there is no Dvd player just incase you are expecting one for rainy days.

We received a very warm and friendly welcome from the owner on arrival. The cottage was very well equipped with plenty of crockery etc. The only criticism I have is that the shower was rather weak but this did not in any way spoil our holiday and I would be very happy to stay at Bracken cottage again.

This was our 2nd stay at the cottage,very clean and comfortable with an owner nearby if needed,lots to do in the local area and just a short walk to bainloch deer park and sandyhills beach,would recommend!

It’s a lovely cottage,clean and very well presented.

However,we were disappointed that there was no outside seating table,benches as in the property listing photos. There were two bucket chairs and a very small table ,not adequate if four people staying and totally unsuitable for anyone with mobility issues. We did enjoy our stay though,and would definitely stay there again.

Bracken Cottage was a delight to stay in.

The quality of the interior was second to none from the crockery through to the soft furnishings. Hazel was very welcoming and our stay was all the more enjoyable for that. The cottage is near to lots of places of interest to visit being a perfect base and we never had to travel far to do what we wanted. Our two grandsons had a great time and could play safely in the grounds without us having to worry. We would recommend the cottage for a lovely break and have already done so since returning home.

The house was beautiful, comfy, lovely location, everything you need to make your holiday enjoyable.

The only 2 things were no WiFi and only two chairs for sitting outside when there were 3 of us. My mum who is 92yrs young loved it and really enjoyed her stay. Would definitely recommend Bracken cottage 100%

A quality accommodation ,comfortable beds spotlessly clean very friendly and helpful owner ,ideal location did miss wi fi at first but then got used to not having it , all the towels, pots, pans etc were all good quality all in all one of the better property’s we have stayed in would definitely return

Lovely warm spacious house.

The weather was cold but didn't stop us having our drinks outside. It was nice to get back into the warmth after. The only negative was the lounge furniture, its different from the website and is not suitable for four people. On the plus side, the bedrooms are large and have good storage. The bathrooms are great with plenty of lovely soft towels. Overall we had a very relaxing holiday.

A fantastic property in an ideal location for exploring the area.

Cottage was beautifully decorated and furnished and was great value for money. Given there is no WiFi the property could do with a Dvd player and on the facilities list it should be clear whether there is one or not. Overall we had a lovely stay.

Beautiful cottage, warm and comfortable with lovely fixtures and fittings and very well equipped (could do with new non-stick frying pan though).

Really enjoyed our stay and had good weather apart from one day. Lovely walk down to Sandyhills Beach which takes about 25 minutes and then you can get onto the coastal path to walk further afield. Walking boots a must at this time of year. It was mild enough to sit outside with a coffee in the sunshine one day. Would have liked a visitors book for recommendations of places/restaurants/cafes etc but plenty of leaflets in dresser drawers. Would definitely return to this lovely cottage and beautiful part of Scotland.

Our third stay here in two years, which speaks for itself. The property is warm, clean very well equipped and homely; a credit to its owners. We wanted for nothing. In a scenic countryside setting with ample private parking. Next to a quiet rural road and only a few minutes drive to Sandyhills and the coastal road. Thoroughly enjoyed our stay and did not want to leave!

.was minus temperatures all week but the cottage was always warm.. It had everything we needed and more..beautiful views all around and so peaceful...definitely the best iv stayed in (and iv stayed in a few) would highly recommend

The house was wonderful.

The lounge and downstairs sitting area were really comfortable and the bedrooms were great. There was everything you might need in the kitchen. The location was quiet and peaceful and that's exactly what we'd gone for. There were things to see in the area around (although at this time of year - end of November- not much was still open). We do recommend Dark Art Distillery at Kirkcudbright and Bladnoch Distillery. We would certainly recommend this house to others.

We loved our stay in Bracken Cottage, so much so we are trying to sort some leave to go back in January (2024).

Facilities were great, very comfortable, lots to do in the area with some great walks. No WiFi but we knew that and was not a problem. Owner was very friendly when we spoke to her when she asked how we were getting on. Recommend.

Beautiful cottage in a lovely part of Scotland.

The pictures dont completely capture how nice the place is. The cottage was warm, clean and welcoming when we arrived and kids loved the open plan layout. Kitchen is big and comfortable enough to spend most of the day before retiring in the evening to the living room upstairs to watch the sun go down over the hills. Located on a rural road next to the owners farm and just 15 mins walk to the beach, deer park and pub/restauarant down the road. Very peaceful, other than the odd passing car. Loads to do and explore nearby. Would love to return in the near future.

The place is as comfortable and welcoming as before with the upstairs lounge offering beautiful views. A quiet and relaxing place to use as a central point for the small towns and villages. Musts are Sweetheart Abbey, breakfast at the deer park or the garden centre in Dalbeattie and a meal at the Selkirk Hotel at Kirkcudbright. There were butterflies galore on the ivy at Rockcliffe and magnificent sun sets.

The house was spotlessly clean and had everything you could need ,comfy beds and sofas.Probably one of the best Sykes cottages we have stayed in.Lovely lock walk at Dalbeatie Town woods and a close walk to the beach at Sandy hills,where we swam in the sea.We spotted Red Kites near by,all kinds of birds,at the near by RSPB Mersehead Nature reserve.We visited The national trust property called Culzean,was a bit away but well worth a visit with a beautiful walled garden and castle.The night sky was beautiful and you could see so many stars,magical.

The cottage itself was excellent, we had a few problems with the freezer not working and making a loud noise.

The Owner was very helpful and tried to sort it out, but due to a family problem we had to return home only after a few days, so really don’t know if the freezer got sorted out. We found the Owner was very helpful and friendly.

This cottage is one of the best we’ve ever stayed in.

What a fantastic place!

The cottage had everything we could possibly need for our holiday and more! It was immaculate and incredibly comfortable, which made it incredibly hard for us to leave. The location, surrounding area and garden was magical. We saw deer, horses, red kite, buzzards, rabbits and heard an owl

Bracken Cottage was certainly a warm cosy welcoming haven when we arrived in early March.

The accommodation exceeded our expectations ; everything we needed for our stay was to hand. Furnishings were really lovely and rooms spacious . We really enjoyed our stay. Highlights were the Bainloch Deer Park nearby with a friendly cafe, Kircudbright for the artist studios and galleries. We enjoyed lunch at Kilnford Farm just outside Dumfries. The weather limited our walking locally as we had an elderly member of our party although the countryside, a local beach and the lanes were there to be enjoyed. A super break .

Beautiful cottage in a stunning location.

Easy to get to and plenty to see and do locally. Beach is just down the road for a lovely walk. Warm and comfortable even though we visited in the snow and rain. A great base to head back to at the end of each day.

This was the perfect location for us and did not disappoint.

The quality of the stable conversion and of the fittings, fixtures and furniture are of a high standard and tastefully done. It is clear a lot of thought has gone into making this cottage an excellent place to stay.

Excellent cottage to have holiday in, the owners have gone above and beyond with facilities and the kindness, friendliness we experienced when on our holiday was exceptional, the only problem we had was having to leave it all behind.

Can't think of anything that was missing for us to be able to enjoy the whole week. (Even weather was great). 1.5 miles to beach, Tesco and others do deliver here. Friendly owner, not intrusive on us at all. Surrounded by fields, hills, valley, forests and horses! Excellent experience was had by all of us.

Ideally situated for exploring the area's towns and villages. Castle Douglas and Kilmarnock are well worth a visit. Lots of wild life and pleasant strolls. Warm but inobstrusive hosts, on hand if needed. Working out when to go back next year.

A well equipped and well kept property. 1.2 miles from the beach at Sunnyside. Just a gentle a stroll along a quite road. A very good base to explore the Solway Coast and old preserved properties of Historic Scotland and National Trust for Scotland. Only 5 miles from an RSPB wetland site.

From the lovely warm welcome to the beautiful interior and the great surroundings we think it was the nicest cottage we have stayed in. Even though we had awful weather, the cottage was so warm and cosy and we would absolutely stay there again.

Excellent holiday property.

Upmarket, tastefully furnished and decorated with every attention to detail. It’s a credit to its owner. It was lovely to return, after walking in cold winter weather to this toasty warm cottage. We enjoyed the countryside views and it’s quiet position and the ample private parking. It was easy to drive (or walk) to Sandyhills and then onto all the beautiful coves, bays, walks and small towns of this area. We would absolutely love to stay again in Bracken Cottage.

A homely spacious cottage for four people.

Nicely furnished with antiquities and well equipped. We spent most of our time in the large farmhouse kitchen. The house was lovely and warm to come back to after a days walking. It was so quiet and we were lucky enough to have a few days of clear skies at night to see the stars. Lovely pub 1/2 mile down the road, and about a mile to the sandy beach. Only thing was that the public toilets near the beach car park were not open. Nice walks along the coast to Rockcliffe and Kippford. Everything was perfect. Only gripe is that the downstairs bathroom has an electric shower and found the pressure very low.

My wife and I have just returned home having spent 5 nights at Bracken Cottage and are very impressed by it.

On our arrival, the house was nice and warm and a welcoming atmosphere was felt. The kitchen had more than we expected and it was nice to be able to sit and chat to each other as the other one of us made meals. The living room upstairs was comfortable and had a nice view to the nearby woods. The bedrooms and bathrooms were furnished with all one needs. Although it rain for 3 days and was quite misty at times it didn't affect our impressions of the area. The local beach was Sandyhills and is a lovely place to visit, as were the nearby towns and villages. The whole area around Dalbeattie is very peaceful and with lovely scenery its ideal for a quiet break away after a dreadful 18 months. Highly recommended.. but don't tell everyone !!

Having never been to Dumfries & Galloway before we can confirm that the cottage is is an ideal position to visit lots of areas of local interest and approx 5minutes walk away from the nearest beach.

The views from the cottage are great. Not having Wifi was a mild inconvenience however there is a really nice pub just down the hill on the lodge park which has wifi and decent food. Would definitely revisit the cottage again and have no hesitation in recommending it.

The holiday and area were ok.

My only comment which is for Sykes, due to covid and no fault of our own. We had to change the holiday date three times over the past 18months. I am sure that the April date 2020 was at a higher rate then when we finally went in October 2021. There was no refund and I am almost certain that a charge was made for re-arranging the October date! This holiday was completely paid for, for the April 2020 period.

The owner, location and luckily the weather couldn't have been better.

Only issues were no Wifi, which was a mild inconvenience but we found a coffee shop with Wifi not too far away where I could catch up on E-mails each day.

TV system a bit wierd and downstairs screen crackles a lot. However, these are minor points. Very peaceful with helpful host just next door. Beautiful scenery with lots of walking potential. For those who like fishing and/or golf it's ideal.

The cottage was exceptional.

Very clean and had everything required for a good stay. The location was a bit rural for us as I have a problem with mobility and couldn’t walk to the beach. I had my travel scooter but no pavements and narrow windy roads. However that’s was my problem. We had a lovely holiday and enjoyed visiting the area. We would highly recommend this cottage.

Lovely quiet location excellent for walking and cycling.

Furnishings excellent and all rooms very spacious. Would definately recommend. Television needed reset but would then not go on till the following day after reset and if changed channel it needed reset again so rarely able to use. No internet but aware of this when booked so not an issue but may be for some.

After having our long awaited break away cancelled with a different company in Wales, due to the enforced lockdown.

We booked with Sykes extremely easy and quick response. The cottage itself was absolutely amazing, extremely clean, well stocked in a lovely part of Scotland. It exceeded our expectations and was very well laid out and suited our needs. The only small grumble we have is that after we had been out walking and exploring during the day the only comfortable sofa to sit on and unwind on is the one in the kitchen. I’m not sure if this is a change due to Covid-19 and the hard wipe clean sofa upstairs is there for that reason? However we spent most of our time when in Bracken Cottage in the kitchen reading, or doing games activities at the lovely big Kitchen table. No WiFi was not an issue either as it was a grateful retreat from the digital age we live in. We had our 10 year old with us and he also loved the cottage, the countryside setting and especially the nearby horses. Would definitely recommend this cottage 100% - thank you we definitely recharged our batteries.

I found the whole experience of booking with Sykes Holiday Cottages an easy and simple experience.

The information on the website was clear and straightforward , particularly in these extraordinary times. I liked the fact that Sykes holidays also gives information about where you are staying, things to do etc. Bracken Cottage was quality all the way from the soft furnishings and equipment to the fact that lights were on in the cottage creating a welcoming feel to the place when we arrived.

Lovely location very quiet, just what we wanted.

The photos do not do it justice, much prettier than we expected. If you have teenagers who need Wifi they may find it a little difficult. Our boys were aged 15 & 16 yrs they struggled to start but very quickly settled as we spent family time playing games. The cottage was spacious and definitely just suitable for the 4 of us. Our teenagers occupied mainly upstairs whilst my husband soaked up the picturesque views outside and really enjoyed bird watching. Even though the owners are next door you would never know as you are given your privacy. The cottage was very clean and had all the facilities we needed. This is a brilliant area if you like walking which you can do from your doorstep. Nearest store is about 2 miles and the larger stores are about 12-14 miles. We would definitely look to book again

Second visit to Bracken Cottage.

Lovely lovely place. Very quiet but within easy reach of places to visit. Cottage equipped with everything you should need for a comfortable holiday. Sofa has been replaced since last visit although I didn't think it was as bad as had been mentioned on reviews. Sky tv a bonus. Couldn't fault this cottage and will be back next year.

Quiet lovely setting staying in a first class cottage

Absolutely lovely cottage, beautiful views & scenery, ideal for quiet walks, not too far from nearby towns for shopping.

Beach a mile down the road & even went on a deer tour & was a very enjoyable experience. Cannot fault this place & will be definitely booking this cottage again next year.

The cottage was in a very quiet location only 1 mile from the coast and was surrounded by excellent walks, wonderful scenery and a wide range of wildlife and farm animals.

It was well equipped for a self catering holiday and had everything we needed, including plenty of towels and hot water. As a previous reviewer said one of the settees in the lounge had certainly seen better days and was uncomfortable to sit on but that was a small point. From a personal perspective the lack of wifi was a bit of a problem but we muddled through. It made us realise how much we now depend on it for all our information.

Bracken Holiday Cottage provides everything needed for a restful holiday.

The kitchen equipment made cooking easy, not always the case in holiday cottages, and the beds were comfortable. The owner, Mrs Jardine, was very helpful but unobtrusive. The view from the cottage was relaxing and we particularly enjoyed watching the many House Martins flying about the cottage, especially in the evenings.

The cottage is really well equipped and great for a busy active family.

The surroundings are also lovely and the horses caught my children’s attention all week. The cottage is ideally situated to cover a vast area of Dumfries and Galloway. One small point - there is no WiFi at the cottage - so families with older children this may be more of a problem? We would certainly return

We had a lovely time at Bracken Holiday cottage.

Very comfortable and clean. There are lots of things to do near by and lots of places to visit, castles and towers. Also if you have children a lovely beech near by. We are also interested in the wild life and you can visit many of the bird reserves in the area. Also in the evening watch the swallows flying over which was nice to see. There is a road next to the property but not busy when we where there, and you only see the owner Hazel if you need her, and she will soon get things sorted if necessary. She was very nice and helpful, for our first stay. We would certainly think about returning to this cottage.

A great area I know well & the cottage is an ideal place situated quietly away from all hustle & bustle but close enough to the beach & other attractions, super owner, very friendly & the cottage was well equipped, cosy well kitted kitchen etc.

Brillant property.

Superb position, 1 mile to Sandyhills beach, 10 mins to Dalbeattie and 20 mins to Castle Douglas with a lovely range of independent shops. Bracken cottage is a beautiful property with a gorgeous view. The cottage has everything you could need. Plenty of parking and although right next door to the farm very private. It's definitely not if we would return but when!

Lovely detached cottage next to the owners farm, however there is no noise or effects from this.

Owner very friendly. One mile from a beach with walks and walks at Covend to Kippford, so great for families. Lots to see round and about and a great 12 mile round trip through Forrest to Dalbeattie from Covend. Beds really comfy, sofas in lounge not so comfy.

Great place to rest and relax lovely countryside beaches about a five minute car ride away with access to two beaches in the area parking is pay display at both beaches.

Excellent location, close to a sandy beach with parking, toilets and a shop.

Despite being attached to a farm, there is clear separation to ensure your privacy. Very clean, owner on hand if you have any problems or queries. Very comfortable. Quiet and lovely to watch the swifts going in and out of the nests. Dalbeattie close.
