About the location

SANQUHAR

Dumfries 26 miles; Ayr 31 miles; Kilmarnock 32 miles.

A former Royal Burgh, the town of Sanquhar sits on the River Nith in Dumfries and Galloway. The name derives from the Gaelic 'Seann Cathair', meaning 'Old Fort' and at the southern end of the town there can still be seen the ancient ruins of the castle. Robert Burns was a frequent visitor to Sanquhar and wrote many of his best known nature poems while inspired by the surrounding countryside. The town today boasts a selection of bars, shops and cafes, a 9 hole golf course, a modern swimming pool with attached fitness centre, and the A’ The Airts Arts Centre, which showcases a wide variety of local and regional arts and crafts. In addition, the town lays claim to the oldest working Post Office in the world at 300 years and counting. Magnificent Drumlanrig Castle and Country Estate lies only 10 miles to the south and offers a wide range of family and outdoor activities throughout the year. Sanquhar is virtually encircled by hills with the Carsphairn and Scaur range to the west and the Lowther Hills to the south east. The Southern Upland Way, a 212 mile coast-coast walking path, passes through the village. Mountain bikers too are well-served by waymarked trails at Drumlanrig Castle and the 7stanes trail at Ae Forest, not to mention many local tracks and forest roads. With direct rail access to/from Glasgow and Carlisle, Sanquhar has much to offer throughout the year.
