  • "What a wonderful place to stay!"

A very well equipped, comfortable cottage, with a lovely view of hills and a large pond. Everything you could ever need for a holiday base. The hot tub is a fabulous bonus, we were star gazing in that most evenings. The pool table was fun too, we had not played pool for years. There are many good books to read, sky TV, all you want if the weather is bad and you wanted to cozy up indoors. The lodge is very stylish and warm, but you also have the benefit of a wood burning stove for those chillier evenings. It is a very short drive to the shops in Castle Douglas.Threave castle and gardens is nearby. You take a boat ride to the castle, which is unique. Another great castle to visit is Caerlaverock castle, it has an unusual design. There are lovely woodland walks in Dalbeattie forest to Kippford Bay, which is a nice place to visit. There's a great pub restaurant (The Anchor Hotel) which serves fantastic food. A must do is feeding the wild goats and red deer, we took several kilos of carrots and they were gone within minutes. Hahaa Logan's fish pond is a unique place to visit, and Logan's Botanical Gardens is amazing! The Wood of Cree is another beautiful place to visit, with lots of waterfalls. Walks around Glen Trool, Kirroughtree, Clatteringshaws Loch are wonderful. Of course you can walk up the Merrick, if you are fit enough. A drive down Raiders road is good if you want a nice forest drive. Stinchar falls is another nice walk to a waterfall. There are many waterfalls to discover in the Galloway, if that is your thing. Eskrigg nature reserve is a great place for bird watching and looking out for red squirrel. There's so much to do in the Galloway, a week simply isn't long enough. We will definitely stay at Hardhills Cottage when we next return to the Galloway, I doubt you could wish for a more lovely place to stay. Thank you.

  • "I spent ALL day trying to get hold of the owner to get a key number only to find he was in Turkey."

Don't you know when owners are away, if not why not, we could of been given an alternative number. Why is it so difficult to get in touch with yourselves by phone, not everybody has whats app, you don't even have a phone number on your web site had to find it on google. Very frustrated holiday people The travel instructions are wrong at the last instant, you do not turn left onto B727 (which isn't signed) you go 50 yds past B727 then turn right into the cottage driveway. Very noisy traffic mainly HGV's at night even with the windows shut. On the plus side the people I did speak to were very helpful

Hi Brenda , Im sorry to hear you have difficulty getting hold of Sykes . I did message you on the app to say I was on holiday and you would receive a scheduled message with the codes etc on the day of arrival . The directions to the cottage are not wrong , in the scheduled message I explain that for some reason the the sat nav asks you to turn left or right depending on which way you are coming in but to do the opposite. • "This property is utterly stunning."

Its situated 3 miles (give or take) from the nearest village in both directions. Its very private and quiet for maximum relaxation! The whole house is finished to a really high standard and is a stones throw away from Dalbeattie forrest or the coast at Kippford for stunning views and great walks. I honestly couldn't find fault and we would be happy to return!

Scenery was stunning, the cottage was beautifully presented and immaculate. The beds are super comfy. We loved the conservatory for stargazing at night. The view was out of this world. The cottage is so peaceful and comfortable. The log fire is amazing at night to put on, nothing beats it. Hot tub was fantastic and again the views are breath taking whilst taking a dip. We would definitely go back. The children are already asking us for a return visit. 10/10 would highly recommend.

Written directions to property are wrong. Cottage is situated on east side of A745.

Hi Anne, the directions are correct. On the scheduled message it clearly states that for some reason the sat Nav asks you to turn right or left depending on which directions you are coming from, but to turn the opposite way . We are sorry to hear that you didn’t find the facilities and comfort up to standard. Regards, Ewen & Shelagh Property Owner

phoned Ewen a couple of times very friendly and helpful, the surrounding area has outstanding views. The nearest neighbour is 400 yards away wonderfully peaceful. Shame about the weather but you don't go to Scotland in February for the sun. Visited lots of the local areas and went up to Ayr for the day. Had a fabulously relaxing week. Hot tub fantastic once up to temp. Will definitely be back. Congrats Ewen and Shelagh on a beautiful bungalow

About the location

CASTLE DOUGLAS

Dalbeattie 6 miles; Kirkcudbright 9.5 miles; Dumfries 18 miles.

The attractive country town of Castle Douglas is nestled in the southwest of Scotland, in the Dumfries and Galloway region. Castle Douglas is known locally as the 'Food Town', playing host to a large selection of independent food shops, as well as a range of wonderful pubs and restaurants. The town provides access to the picturesque Solway Coast, with its miles of beautiful beaches and scattering of pretty fishing villages. Carlingwark Loch lies just south of the town, a large, freshwater lake, great for coarse fishing and sailing. Enthusiasts of water sports need look no further than Loch Ken and The Galloway Activity Centre. It offers sailing, windsurfing, powerboating, kayaking, canoeing, and a wobbly water park. Less than half an hour’s drive on the A713, it is an ideal place for a family or groups. Hop aboard a boat and venture to Threave Castle, perched on an island in the River Dee, and explore its glorious gardens elsewhere on the estate, open to the public all year round. Dumfries and Galloway is an area renowned for its outdoor activities including bird watching, mountain biking, fishing, star-gazing, and golfing. Practise your swing on the 18-hole golf course situated in the grounds of the former 18th Century country mansion, Cally Palace. Pull on your walking boots and go hiking across west Scotland’s inspiring landscape, or sail along its wonderful coastline.
