  • "A lovely stay at Hurst View iN August and we have already booked to come back next year in 2025."

Lovely home that is so much bigger than it looks from the outside. The house had everything you needed whilst on holiday and more. Pros Lovely big rooms Cloakroom, bathroom on 1st floor and en suite in top floor Kitchen with all utensils and modern equipment Parking on drive at front of house Great WiFi for phones and devices. Smart tv in lounge. Cons No separate recycling bin Double bed on top floor has head board both ends so is not very long to be aware. Overall a lovely stay in a lovely modern home.

Thanks for your feedback Katie! So pleased you will be returning next year and that you enjoyed the house and the area, which a lot of people fall in love with. Just had full fibre installed so even better WiFi now! It is frustrating with the recycling, Sykes advised only to have one bin, sorry! Wooden, top double bed is as photographs and is not advisable for guests over 6’ tall, again sorry. Double bed on the first floor will take any size! Regards Mike Property Owner

One bedside light was not working in the double bedroom on the first floor. Be useful to have an information pack available especially for rubbish and recycling collections.

  • "Well maintained and looked after, this is a beautiful home and we had a lovely holiday."

The only disappointment was the standard of cleanliness in the kitchen. All the cups glasses plates saucepans etc had to be washed before first use as they were very dirty. There was a dirty towel and tea towel left on the side - which I washed and left clean. The oven glove was filthy and should be thrown away! The rest of the accommodation seemed good, we are mindful it is dog friendly we didn’t expect perfection but there was old dog poop in the garden too which I cleaned up

  • "The property is very spacious and the location near Freshwater is good."

A country park nearby, so good for dog walking. Bedrooms are a good size. All utensils you need are there. We liked the big map of the island on the wall. Some minor grips. No guide for occupants eg nearby doctors, hospitals, shops etc. Instructions are brief and stuck on walls. No means of recycling food or plastics etc. Towels very basic. No welcome pack either. On of the toilets got blocked for a while. Lighting is a bit dodgy as well. But if these were addressed it would have warranted 5 stars.

Thanks for your feedback Jeremy-house and local area guidance in kitchen now and lounge lighting sorted. Regards Mike Property Owner

  • "Nice place to stay."

My only problem was the bed in the top room. My opinion is that the mattress needs to be replaced as I had to use one of the singles for 3 nights. Towels need to be bigger. Other than that it was fine.

Thanks for your feedback. The top bedroom mattress does not need replacing as it's fairly new. It is firm which I understand is not to everyone's liking. For balance there is a much softer double bed on the first floor. Property Owner

  • "Hurst View is a beautiful, well equipped home on a lovely part of the Island."

The perfect base to explore other areas, and there’s some great walks right on your doorstep. This is a big house with lots of space but also felt so warm and cosy. Being a dog friendly property it has a secure back garden, accessible from the lounge. I particularly enjoyed the stunning views from the top bedroom. We will certainly stay here again.

Many thanks for your feedback Nicola. The 'picture' window seat in the top bedroom with views of the sea at Yarmouth is one of my favourite places to be! Property Owner

  • "I have to say that we were very disappointed with some aspects of cleanliness at the property, the kitchen and bathrooms in particular."

I had to clean the ensuite shower tiles before we could use it, picture attached. The pink residue is a build-up of bacteria and skin cells, if this is not cleaned then mould will develop, which it had. The kitchen cupboards were all dirty with grease covering the shelves where the pans are stored, I have cleaned these out as well. Some pans are not fit to be used, (pictures attached) and need to be replaced. The oven was filthy and had not been cleaned for some time, I cleaned this as well, before and after picture attached. The oven trays provided were not fit to use so I purchased 2 new ones which I have left at the property. Also, several pans need to be replaced as they are not fit to be used. There are only 2 dinner forks and 3 small forks, the property sleeps 6 people so there is not enough cutlery, I ate my dinner with a spoon on the evenings we had guests. We found one cupboard full of food, which I presumed perhaps belonged to the owner, so moved it around in order to accommodate our own shopping items. To then receive an email the day prior to departure, reminding us to leave the property clean, tidy, in the same condition we found it and to remove all food from cupboards and fridge, just added insult to injury. We did not remove the food we found in the cupboard. This is not the standard of cleanliness one expects in a holiday rental property. I have more photographs should it be necessary. I look forward to hearing from you. Regards Paul Heath Have pic's to back this up

I'm sorry you were not pleased and appreciative when you visited Hurst View, as many other guests are. I prefer to read the two previous feedback reports saying that 'everything about the house was spot on' and 'Great location for exploring the island'. I guess you can't please everyone! As long as you are willing to embrace the self catering community experience, Hurst View will be for you. It's not a 5 star hotel, with all that you would expect. It's a lived in, warm and well equipped ‘home’ that I love to share with everyone. And it helps paying the bills :) There's plenty of cuttlery for six people, so no need to eat your dinner with a spoon. Regards Mike Property Owner

  • "We had a most enjoyable few days on the Isle of Wight."

The house was clean and we were ok but there were a few things that irritated us. The seating in the living room is not adequate for the size of the house with only one sofa that was anywhere near comfortable. There were no recycling facilities, we resorted to separating our own rubbish and taking it to the local recycling depot. There was no dishwasher though clearly a space for one in the kitchen. It has been a long long time since I've stayed in a cottage with no dishwasher! The bed on the top floor is very hard although this is probably a matter of personal taste as my husband was comfortable. I moved downstairs. It should also be noted that the house backs onto a busy road with the associated noise levels, Lastly, take plenty of loo roll and toilet cleaner as none are provided.

Thanks for your feedback! Due to popular demand, I have added an extra comfy sofa to the lounge-see Sykes updated pictures! Again, recycling has always been a problem for us as I was advised by Sykes not to have a second bin. Glad you were able to recycle using other methods. A dishwasher has been fitted for December 22! The two-way single lane road noise is intermittent, no roads on the island are 'busy'. There should always be plenty of toilet rolls, cleaner is provided although shouldn't be necessary as Sam, our cleaner, prides herself on cleanliness! Mike Property Owner

Otherwise nice house in good location, perfect for exploring the IOW.

Thanks for your feedback. I prefer a firm bed, the top bedroom bed is perfect for me and many other guests! There is a softer mattress on the double bed in the first floor double. Different couples have their own preferences, we feel that 'Hurst View' caters for all. A dishwasher has been fitted for December 22! Mike Property Owner

Lounge furniture not very comfortable red settee fine but the blue club suite very uncomfortable. Garden is a yard only needed weeding could be a lot better. No information regarding rubbish collection no facility for recycling. We took all our recycling into Freshwater. In spite of the criticism we did enjoy our stay.

Thanks for your feedback! Extra comfy sofa added, see updated photographs. The rear garden has been extended to the side in November giving it a much more expansive feeling. Loo brushes also added to all three toilets. Mike Property Owner

  • "The house was fine, but looking as if it needs a refresh at the end of the season."

The light next to the bed in the top bedroom didn't work, nor did the blind in that bathroom and the cistern in the top bathroom needs attention as the button didn't always come back up and it would waste a lot of water, but these are easy fixes if the owner is aware (I shall send them a text). I also think a toilet brush in each toilet is a good policy, and I would like to have had some recycling facility - we brought our recycling home with us in the end. For the rest, though, the house suited our purposes perfectly, lovely location, quiet situation, beach 5 minutes walk. We would happily go back there again. Many thanks Simon

  • "You describe this property as a "well-presented detached lodge"."

It is in fact an end-of-terrace house with the small garden backing onto a main road. There was no dishwasher (yes I know this was not included in the details, but I assumed this was an oversight); no recycling facilities; lack of serving dishes, knives etc. in kitchen; no mirrors, loo brushes, bins in bedrooms and bathrooms on middle floor. The carpets could do with a good clean and the whole house could do with a coat of paint. the top shower room has mould/damp patches inside and out the shower cubicle which looked very unpleasant.

Thanks for your feedback and for returning in April 2022. The description by Sykes is quite obviously wrong from the photo's. Garden extended in November 2022. Loo brushes added to all three toilets. House was re-decorated, and the carpets professionally cleaned at the end of 2021 season. Other queries answered elsewhere. Many thanks Mike Property Owner

  • "The property is in a great location for exploring the west side of the island."

The bed we used was comfortable as was the settee in the living room. Some of the pans are in need of replacing but there is everything you need in the kitchen. The property is in need of painting throughout but this doesn't spoil your stay. We stayed for 2 weeks and a change of towels would have been appreciated especially as there is no reduction for the second week. We would have liked to recycle but this wasn't an option as there was only 1 bin. The neighbours are very friendly. We would overall recommend a stay at this property.

About the location

YARMOUTH

Newport 12 miles; Ryde 18 miles.

The attractive seaside town of Yarmouth is the oldest town on the Isle of Wight, and its busy harbour is a haven for all kinds of watercraft, with the terminal used for regular mainland ferry crossings to Lymington. Yarmouth’s narrow streets are home to an attractive array of shops and inns, whilst a visit to Henry VIII’s castle is not to be missed. There's great cycling (and a cycle hire shop) and walking to be had along the coastal path. Why not take an energetic stroll at the nearby Tennyson Down and Headon Warren. Sandhard beach is 15 minutes' walk away, with Colwell Bay with its sandy beach and amenities for the family 7 minutes away by car. Yarmouth's pier and sailing club jetty is another good spot for crabbing. Four miles away is Compton Bay, famous for dinosaur remains; head there at low tide and see if you can find the two enormous three-toed feet. West Wight is an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and Yarmouth is an ideal base from which to explore this wonderful island.
