  • "A lovely idyllic spot and a very nice house."

We especially liked the cosy kitchen/diner and the lovely outside space. We only have one suggestion: Some more forks and plates would be handy of you are staying with 5 or 6 people.

Unique and a great relaxing location. Probably not for everyone who wants a ultra modern place but it was perfect for us and the dogs

Nogmaals dank daarvoor!

  • "It was an amazing and well furnished cottage, beautiful inside and out."

We had two dogs with us and they loved it as well, we did have to clean the upstairs toilet again and the dishwashing supplies/kitchen cloth weren’t clean. But overall our stay was amazing, lots of castles and relaxing. The only tips we would have is that it would be nice to have a bit more information for dogs for the area. Or walks you can take them on from the cottage with a map. For dogs this property is very nice but you’re on a winery and there is nothing to separate, you can walk around the winery which is nice for the morning and evening walks but sometimes there are also guests of course.

  • "Should state that stairs are steep."

Bath is difficult to access and impossible for anyone with disability or limited movement. No separate shower to use. Heating very efficient. Kitchen nice, but mugs, plates etc very random. Needs small fry pan. Beds are high, but duvets thick and warm. NO wardrobes at all! Only hangars on wall hooks. Chests of drawers have handles missing and some had odd sheets and bits left in them. Quirky house in a nice setting. Would be delightful when warm enough to use conservatory. Not keen on WC opening straight into kitchen. Overall nice house in good position ( despite potholes on entrance) but some amendments and warnings needed.

  • "Downstairs toilet blocked from the get go, literally flush it and all comes to the top."

The lock broke whilst I was outside. 5.30 am had to call a locksmith, cost a substantial amount of money for me to sort. Owners are refusing to help with this at all. Even though locksmith has confirmed the lock was faulty. Very unfair and I’d never treat anyone like this, hence I cannot understand why these people would. I advise against staying here.

Nice views of the vineyard which you can walk around and a lovely long sofa to curl up into with the fire going on cold nights. The owners were super friendly and helpful , would recommend. Lee

  • "6 a.m."

shotgun-fire in the adjoining fields *every* morning sent us home early, more exhausted than when we arrived. Bizarre, unfinished renovation - certainly not "thorough" as described - unpainted bare plaster walls, no light switches for the kitchen near the living room/front door, the downstairs toilet is now off the kitchen where the hall wall has been removed, ugh. No measuring jug/spoons/kitchen scales. Single glazed windows with no coverings in places at the back, will be very cold in winter! Bathroom toilet doesn't flush properly, dirty windows throughout, unkempt/unmown garden... No welcome info on arrival, spent the 1st evening trying to get onto wifi (the arrival email came the next day). The cottage feels unloved/unwanted - nowhere close to other 4* cottages we've stayed in, sadly. The picture of the sunroom is taken from the Carr Taylor vineyard's outdoors terrace, making it like a fishbowl, completely lacking privacy - needs a hedge planting! Cottage is at the entrance to the vineyard RIGHT NEXT to visitor's area, which is just not made clear on the listing - it is certainly not private/secluded/away from it all!!! The lane is very busy with constant cars, vans, minibuses and full size coaches coming and going all day, sometimes making it difficult to get to the cottage and on/off the drive. Not "idyllic" as described, by our definition. However, the milk/butter and dog bits were appreciated and the log burner was lovely!! Well-placed for access to Hastings, Rye and the south coast, Battle, High Weald etc.

Thank you for your feedback, we will take your points onboard. Some we are aware of and are in the process of fixing and the others we didn’t know about so we'll add to the list. However, it also appears some of your points are the choices we’ve made when renovating the house with love, are simply not to your taste. Unfortunately the gunshots are a downside to being in the country. This is seasonal and until this weekend we’ve only just heard this and only in the distance after 8am. We’re sorry you experienced this and can only assume that during your stay it was closer than usual. We’re sad to hear our purposely, polished, plastered and sealed walls are not to your liking but we and other guest’s enjoy this finish. Not totally sure about the kitchen lights, they are in the kitchen and the living room/front door switches are by and in living room/front door. The house is double glazed throughout apart from 2 very small original windows. This is not a problem in the winter. We decided not to put blinds in the kitchen but we have them at the front of the house. The kitchen windows are in a position which are not facing the lane and for us they frame the vineyard beautifully. We are set back from the lane going to the vineyard so we do have some cars going in and out and it seems unfortunate this was a problem, we’ve never experienced not being able to get into the drive. We’re also sad to hear you didn’t find Oak Meadows the idyllic spot that we do, as we love spending time there. Glad you enjoyed the long burner and thanks again for the feedback. Property Owner

We had a fantastic break the only feedback I will give is if you could create a closed area within the back patio area we could still happily sit in the sun without having our dogs on their leads

Hi We are so pleased you enjoyed your stay at Oak Meadow . Thank you for your feedback , we now provide a secure mobile dog lead peg , so both guests and their pets can relax . We currently love the view of the vineyard so much that we are reluctant to enclose the garden . Thank you for taking the time to comment, it is much appreciated . Best wishes Property Owner

About the location

WESTFIELD

Battle 5 miles; Hastings 6 miles; Rye 9 miles.

Westfield is a thriving village situated only six miles inland of Hastings. With excellent access to other parts of Sussex and Kent, it’s a perfect choice for a base whilst exploring this part of the South Coast. Maplehurst Wood, on the outskirts of the village, offers approximately 78 acres of ancient woodland, and a Site of Special Scientific Interest, it's home to many different species of breeding birds, including kestrel, tawny owl, woodpecker and nuthatch. For those wishing for long country walks, relaxed days spent fishing, or golf, Westfield is a wonderful option. Dating back to Doomsday times, Westfield, then known as Westewelle, is still one of the largest villages in the area, and even has its own winery - Carr Taylor Vineyards, a popular tourist attraction with vineyard walks, tours and wine tasting. There’s also a village shop, newsagents, butcher, delicatessen, hairdressers and a pub called The New Inn, serving excellent food. For fine dining, The Wild Mushroom Restaurant is a good choice. With Hastings just six miles away, you can enjoy a swim in the sea, beachcombing along the shore or clambering over castle ruins. For those wishing to wander around battlements or sample a Sussex cream tea, then make your way to Battle, a short drive to the west. With the social history museum of Yesterday's World allowing a walk through time, passing quaint shops with cobbled streets, Battle is appealing at any time of year, whilst Westfield provides a wonderful base.
