  • "Lovely property."

Great layout and high standard of fittings. Loved the sofa in the kitchen- very sociable. Bathrooms and showers of good standard and beds very comfy. Very peaceful and short walk to the beach. Didn’t take our dog with us in the end but no dog smells from others- very clean. Would definitely recommend to others.

  • "Great cottage; very clean and very high standard throughout."

It was a bit more than we'd normally spend on renting a holiday house but our daughter's wedding in the area required us to be there. Parking was a little challenging. I did more parallel parking in that week than I have done in the last year!

  • "We were 4 adults, 2 of them over 80/ 90 (+ 2 dogs) staying for 12 days in May."

We liked Whitstable, its quirky high street with surprising range of shops, pubs/ restaurants etc, laid back and slightly green/ alternative vibe. Local walks to Prospect Fields or beach and shops convenient. Foxes + cubs on golf course, herring gulls nesting on roof and plenty of bird song- all good. Clifton Road was narrow and rough, parking challenging at times but we always found somewhere within walking distance. At first glance Newden Cottage impressed with decent amount of space and light, 2 cleverly designed bathrooms with good easy- access showers, cupboard with washing machine in the downstairs one, both wash basins too tiny. Nice looking kitchen with double doors to garden, big dining table, 3 decent bedrooms. Loads of clean towels but no spare bedding. Shampoo and hand wash/ shower gel provided but toilet paper lasted only a few days. My elderly parents managed the stairs ok but struggled with the heavy sash windows. Storage space eg for shoes would have been welcome, as would be a larger door mat behind the entrance door. Had we not been lucky with weather keeping floors etc dry + clean would have been tricky. There's a step along the upstairs corridor to bathroom which would benefit from a safety light at night. A few convenient night lights were found elsewhere. A welcome hamper was a nice touch, as was a box of dog things. Small enclosed garden gets some sunshine all day. Decking with peeling paint and outside furniture needed a clean, particularly the cushions which were damp and dirty in a box outside, possibly untouched since last year. Fake turf... Useful washing line. Clean inside on the whole, although dust and dirt here and there, eg in kitchen drawers, windows + -frames, shower drain. The outside table wobbled and a broken- off piece was on floor. The kitchen was beautiful but with limited worktop and drainage space. The owner kindly provided more crockery after I mentioned that we struggled a bit despite running dishwasher every day. The only (non- stick) frying pan was scratched and either very dirty or corroded- owner provided replacement. We avoided other also scratched smaller non- stick pans and used a brand new huge stainless steel pot. Unlike previous reviewers we didn't find kitchen equipment extensive. We did appreciate being able to bring 2 dogs- we asked, obviously. We booked relatively late, needing somewhere suitable for elderly parents and 2 dogs, based on positive reviews and careful study of available info. It's not a cheap area anyway but all in all, in our opinion, it was too expensive for what it is. Sorry.

  • "Great location, lovely house ……."

Almost faultless apart from the mattress in the front bedroom which needs replacing. My back knew all about it towards the end of the week! Better quality sheets in this room and twin is the only other thing which would much improve the experience in this lovely place to stay.

  • "A lovely house, really clean and comfortable and with (almost) everything you need."

Despite the train line running opposite the front of the house, it was extremely quiet and the trains were no bother at all - quieter than any traffic would be. We found a parking space with no problem and enjoyed being able to walk around the corner to the town, its shops, restaurants and pubs and down to the harbour / the beach. We really enjoyed our stay here and would happily stay again. Small additions to the kitchen equipment and some pegs for washing would make it complete.

Stayed here for 3 weeks. My husband & I, with our daughter & granddaughter & a doggo. Everything we needed, great location & free on road parking a real bonus in Whitstable.

  • "Generally everything was OK, but there were a few points that if improved would make the experience so much better."

The information book was lacking and inconsistent, some info on white goods in the book other info in drawers, no local info but there was a menu was for Xmas! knives so blunt they should have been thrown away, however, during the week we discovered new set hidden in a drawer, only 8 coat hangers between 3 bedrooms, luckily M&S in Canterbury gave us more. Listing is for 6 but no pan or pot big enough to hold food for 6. Outside table and chairs only suitable for 4. BBQ but no metal tools. Inside of oven needed cleaning, there was no grill pan. Ironing board cover not fit for purpose. Sweeping brush needing fixing to handle. Toilet brushes and holders needed cleaning or replacing. WiFi speed was abysmal and unsecure.

  • "Lovely cottage."

Very well set up and immaculate facilities. Close to town centre and to station. I've stayed in many holiday rentals but this is the first time I've been asked to strip the beds. I thought that was a bit much, considering I paid £200 per night for 3 of us. They have 5 hours between lettings to clean the house, and that cost is included in the letting price.

  • "We really enjoyed our stay in Whitstable."

The house is well proportioned and in a good state of repair. The two negatives we would like to report are: 1) the garden is in a deplorable state. Judging by the size of the weeds it hasn't received any attention for some time. In advance of our visit it hadn't even been swept. I hope it gets sorted before future guests arrive. 2) cooking pots. There were 3 saucepans, all perfectly serviceable though a larger one would have been useful. However, there was no oven proof casserole dish - there were 3 other pan lids (in addition to the above) which presumably once fitted pots/pans that are no longer there. We wanted to cook several times during our stay and this pot shortage severely limited our options. Will leave it to you to decide whether to publish these comments.

  • "Prior to arrival worried that car parking might be a real problem as we travelled in two cars."

In the event we managed to find spaces in Clifton Road which is quite narrow. The location of Newden Cottage is very close to Main shopping Street and only a short walk to the nearest beach which can be quickly accessed by using the short cuts through the signposted alleys.

  • "We really enjoyed staying at Newden Cottage - great place & location."

It’s very light and spacious, but also feels comfortable too. The only improvement I’d make is to the information provided to guests on arrival eg WiFi instructions, heating instructions, whereabouts of washing machine. etc etc

  • "Whitstable is perfect for a dog friendly base."

Two minor comments on the cottage - no means of making coffee, so take a cafetière; and the living room really only seats four adults. Overall it was lovely though. We were lucky to find a parking space outside the house!

  • "The cottage has everything you need for a pleasant stay."

We found the beds to be exceptionally comfortable and slept well. Parking can be challenging at certain points of the day but we managed to find a space even if it was a bit further along the road. The landlord was very helpful and contacted us directly to arrange a convenient day for cleaning. The cottage is spotlessly clean and very well maintained. We would highly recommend Newden Cottage.

Easy walking distance from the station. Pleasant traffic free walk into town, via the golf course and beach. Secure back garden for children and dog. Lockable outhouse for the cycle. Quiet little road, only 2 minutes walk to nearest supermarket and bus stop. The house was spotlessly clean, beds comfy, showers hot, kitchen well equipped ( great set of sharp knives ). Thoroughly recommended.

About the location

WHITSTABLE

Herne Bay 5 miles; Canterbury 7 miles.

The lively town of Whitstable, which is known as the “Pearl of Kent”, dates back to before the Domesday Book. Its seaside location makes it ideal for watersports all year round, and its fishing heritage is reflected by the Oyster Festival, which takes place every July. The buzzing local museum/art gallery introduces around six new exhibitions each year, and has a fabulous coffee shop. Whitstable Castle dates back to the 1790’s, and hosts events all year round including a big May Day celebration with contributions from local musicians and artists. The town is home to a small, independent brewery, and any need for retail therapy will easily be satisfied by the range of both national stores and charming small, independent shops. Whitstable is also home to The Pearsons Arm, a gastropub owner by celebrity chef Richard Phillips and nearby in Seasalter is the Michelin star-awarded gastropub, The Sportsman which is also well worth a visit. The city of Canterbury, with its fine 6th century cathedral is just 7 miles away; also nearby is Herne Bay, from where on a clear day you can see as far as Southend and the Isle of Sheppey.
