  • "We had a wonderful family week with our grand daughter, her parents and two dogs in this Cumbrian Farmhouse and we all loved it."

The location and all the facilities were perfect for us and it was a new area of the Lakes for us to explore. The kitchen was light, bright and very well equipped. The sitting / dining room was generous and the log burner was a delight. The wifi was not always at full strength but this could be the numbers of people using it. We will definitely be back as even the weather behaved during our stay.

Everything you need is there and more, we had a brilliant stay. The garden is safe and secure for dogs with lovely scenery all around you. The owner is so welcoming and friendly. We have already booked to come back next year.

  • "Fantastic stay thank you."

Hopefully we will be back to stay next year. Excellent spot to explore the Northern side of the Lakes. Small maintenance issue which was resolved quickly. There is a bridal way going past the house and through the farm but caused no issues for us. The grounds are excellent and the sunsets amazing from the comfort of the garden. The garden is secure for dogs to roam free which is a bonus. Walks from the farm mean no car needed to have an adventure.

The property ticked all our boxes and it's secluded location amongst the sheep make it blissful for relaxing in. The two dogs loved being able to run around in the garden whilst we relaxed with a glass after long hikes. The Wi-Fi was hit and miss at times but did not stop us from being able to research our next days adventures.

The kitchen had every appliance and piece of equipment to cook for 6 people. Shower, fab bath and bathroom were very well equipped and relaxing. Fantastic views from the house, sunsets were beautiful. Loved the birds and watching the rabbits. The owner and his dogs were very welcoming and helpful with local knowledge. Will definitely be on our list for next year.

However, I was really disappointed to see that Lakelovers is owned by Skyes Cottages. I will never book through Sykes Cottages again after the terrible customer service and the way they treated customers and owners during covid. Saying that, I can't praise the lovely cottage enough. On arrival, we were greeted by the owner who had not only ensured that the central heating was on but had lit the enormous log burner in the lounge! Christmas decorations created a lovely atmosphere. Despite very cold weather outside we had a cosy week in this well equipped house. Would definitely book again.

  • "Scalegill house was a beautiful property, we went with a group of 5 for my birthday along with my dog, the house exceeeded our expectations, it was so spacious with a mixture of traditional and modern, the fire was beautiful with unlimited wood and everything you needed in the utility to wash and dry muddy wet clothes, the house was well equipped with everything you need and more, from the large beautiful secure garden perfect for my dog,to the massive deep freestanding bath in the loft suite, everything was so clean and fresh, had the pleasure of meeting John the owner, top guy with a great sense of humour and told us all about himself his family and the history of the house."

The area is so peaceful but close enough for the nearest town of Keswick, also the lakes distillery just down the road is a must, £18 for the hour tour and tasting was an absolute bargain. Catbells wasn’t to far if your into climbing which we were and you’re not far from derwent water for a wild swim ! Central lakes is about an hours drive but we all had cars so was perfect, all in all 10 out of 10, thoroughly recommended and would love to go back. Fiona, Bear

The photos on the website don't perhaps fully do the property justice and we did miss the driveway on arrival (a minor issue for us in daylight, but some reference in the directions to the lodge sign might help others in the dark). However, this property is incredibly comfortable and spacious, superbly equipped and in stunning surroundings with a brilliant secure garden for the dog. We had an amazing week's holiday staying here, thank you

We’ve stayed in many properties within the Lake District and this is definitely one of our favourites. It was all of the things mentioned in my first sentence and we even had good weather! It was also nice to meet the owner, John and have a couple of chats with him. Got the impression that nothing would have been too much trouble, if we had needed to contact him? Was a little cold when we arrived but were able to run the heating. The gardens were lovely and we spent most evenings outside enjoying the sunshine. Great location for exploring the Northern Lakes We had a young child and two dogs with us. The open plan was lovely but a stair gate would have really helped in stopping the child from going up the stairs and from ensuring the dogs stayed downstairs.

The property

Scalegill House, found on a private farm track, close to Lake Bassenthwaite, is a traditional Lakeland longhouse with incredible history.

As with all traditional longhouses, it’s built in a north south direction, allowing for the sun all day and some incredible sunsets in the evening.

The property has been thoughtfully re-developed and has been completely rebuilt from the ground up, the space had been very well utilised and offers excellent social space for friends and families.

The kitchen has a lovely country feel and is superbly fitted out, along with a large family dining table to seat the whole household under Velux windows letting the light flood in.

Enjoy the luxurious lounge for relaxing in front of an enormous log burner and smart TV.

There’s also a lovely conservatory / sunroom to enjoy a morning coffee or a sundowner.

Outside there is plenty of space for children to play with a large lawned garden and a spacious gravel patio with outdoor furniture.

The remnants of Roman forts can be found on the surrounding hills and with views to Skiddaw it is well positioned for exploring right from the door.

Keswick, Cockermouth and Carlisle are all within 15 miles and several great pubs are only a short drive away including the Castle Inn which has an excellent reputation for great food.

The area benefits from being quieter and less commercialised than some of the other Lakeland towns and villages yet is only a short drive to the popular market towns of Keswick and Cockermouth. You may well see the ospreys soaring high above Bassenthwaite or see red squirrels in the area.

Why not enjoy a visit to the Lakes Distillery, explore the networks of paths that criss-cross the area, choose from the superb local country pubs and relax and unwind in the one of the most peaceful corners of the Lake District.

For those wanting the high fells, the summits of Blencathra and Skiddaw are within easy reach and the nearby Whinlatter Forest is the popular destination of choice for those looking for some of the best mountain bike trails in the country.

Note: This property has a Good Housekeeping bond of £200.
