  • "Lovely cottage and setting."

Very clean. It needs a washing machine though. I’m sure there was mention of a shared utility room when we booked but no sign of one. Local books and maps would be a welcome addition in sitting room too.

As a dog owner I loved the wooded area nearby and the enclosed dog run. Very clean and well equipped.

  • "The barn conversion was lovely and definitely of a high standard."

Some very minor issues - the microwave oven didn't work, although it appeared to and one of the few serving dishes had been put away on a top shelf, probably so that it wouldn't be spotted or checked. It had large cracks in it, making it unsafe to use. Also, both sofas had throws, hiding large cracks in the leather, maybe caused by animals. Otherwise the property was a great holiday home. We'd love to visit again.

Dear Mrs Pringle, thank you for lovely comments & observations also. I do apologise for any inconvenience not having a working microwave. I would have acted immediately had I known during your stay & did replace it straight away on your departure when it came to light. I do hope we see you again sometime in the future, best regards Mark Property Owner

  • "We absolutely loved our stay at Abbotts Reading, the properties are all fabulous and ours inside was perfect for what we needed."

A lovely wooded area for the dog to wander and an added extra of a small dog run was amazing due to our dog not being very good with recall so needs to be on a lead when out. The farmhouse next door has fresh free range eggs which I have to say are superb especially as they are still warm when you get them! Positioning is so close to so many places to visit, the National Trust included which are a must in Cumbria! Although this time of year, a few coffee shops are not open, which means you need to make the most of the local pubs of course - and they are all walkable! I would not hesitate in coming back here, Mark was regularly in touch and onsite so any issues would (I'm sure) have been addressed immediately! See you again soon I'm sure.

  • "Thank you for a lovely stay in this beautiful cosy cottage and surroundings."

The dogs too really appreciated the enclosed run and the woody walk. Indeed there were fabulous walks in forests, around lakes and along footpaths - and all close-by via short to medium trips in the car. Lovely villages with pubs and very good takeaways (just up the road) added to our very enjoyable holiday and everywhere (pubs and shops) are very dog-friendly.

A washing machine and a small welcome pack containing milk and coffee/ tea would have been good after a journey from Glasgow late in the evening.

Perfect for our 3 families. Beyond dog friendly too with a private woodland path and an enclosed dog pen for letting off steam. Beautiful and immaculate cottages. Great location away from the crowds and yet easy to reach all the places we wanted to visit. Highly recommended.

  • "The property was in a nice quiet location."

Very good for furry friends, especially having the dog run. Would of been nice to have more of the basic essentials such as salt and pepper, cooking oil, foil and more than two rolls of toilet paper for four people for a week!! Toiletries would be a nice touch. We have stayed in other sykes cottages that had a welcome box of bread, milk etc, which was also nice. Double bed mattress was very hard.

  • "Unexpectedly beautiful spot with its own woodland."

Peaceful place with plenty of outdoor space and seating when the weather is fine. Slight irritations - no washing machine though which might be a problem for longer stays, one toilet roll, only 2 bin bags and quarter of a bottle of washing up liquid

Everything just seemed like brand new & the surrounding grounds were perfect & you only had to leave the grounds to have incredible scenic walks in any direction... & Windermere is only 16 minutes away by car. I've stopped in a few cottages in the past, but none have been this nice.

The property

Escape the rat race in this beautifully converted Lakeland barn.

The Abbots Reading cottages are surrounded by lovely natural woodlands, and you are perfectly situated to explore the South Lakes.

Full of rustic features, yet fully modernised, your barn will become your home while you stay with us here.

Deep in the Lake District countryside at the southern end of Lake Windermere, the rolling hills and valleys round about are ripe for exploration, and you will always have plenty to see and do before returning to the welcoming comfort of your barn. Lakeside nearby has a steamer pier, allowing you to cruise England's longest lake and visit the bustling centres of Bowness and Ambleside to the north.

There is a platform here, too, for the wonderful Lakeside and Haverthwaite Railway, which will draw you by vintage engines into the lush Levens Valley.

Enticing Eateries and country inns are dotted about the green countryside. Inside your cottage, oak beams suspended in a vaulted ceiling set the scene for country living, and the tasteful modernity of this barn conversion will assure you of a supremely restful break.

The excellently arranged wooden kitchen is the perfect place to prepare meals with your party, and if you choose not to sit at the adjacent dining table you can take your foot outside onto the patio. The deer and other wildlife that frequently visit Abbots Reading know that this is a perfectly peaceful haven in which to enjoy time away from the world.

We know you will come away from your stay here satisfyingly refreshed and rejuvenated!

About the location

LAKESIDE

Newby Bridge 1.2 miles; Bowness-on-Windermere 8.7 miles.

Set on the southern shores of Lake Windermere, the small, sleepy hamlet of Lakeside offers a peaceful getaway location, hidden away from the hustle and bustle of the Lake District’s popular attractions, but still within easy reach of them. Whether you decide to discover the area in the car, by foot, bike, boat or steam, there’s plenty to see nearby to keep the whole family content. The ferry dock offers the chance to travel by boat to Waterhead or Bowness, or take a shorter trip to the National Trust’s Fell Foot Park, across the water, which offers pretty grounds set alongside the very tip of the lake, providing plenty of places for picnics, paddling, games and gentle strolls on sunny afternoons. Situated alongside the Lakeside Station is the long-standing Lakeside and Haverwaithe Railway, home to Britain’s oldest standard gauge steam engine, on which you can travel back in time along this well-loved Heritage line, and where little ones will delight in meeting Thomas and his friends. Visit the Lakes Aquarium to uncover the often-secretive world of life below water, where you’ll chance upon hundreds of captivating creatures that feature in the surrounding rivers, lakes and sea. There are wonderful, well-signed walks to be enjoyed in the immediate area, including the 5-mile route to Finsthwaite’s High Dam, which trails from Lakeside through pleasant woodlands and meadows. Lakeside offers an exclusive holiday location with all of the Lake District’s delights at your fingertips.
