  • "This is our (myself & wife) 8th time at the cottage but first time with new owners, the cottage is virtually the same apart from a few nice upgrades, larger tv and WiFi."

    We absolutely love this cottage , well equipped, fantastic views from the lounge and super comfortable when relaxing in the evening , Ambleside is our favourite place in the lakes , lots of walks straight from your door with nice pubs and cafes. If we win the lottery and this place comes up for sale it’s ours

  • "We really enjoyed our stay at the cottage."

    Amazing view from the living room window, very comfy beds & well equipped kitchen. Just a cpl of minor suggestions - Toilet seat is loose, the bathroom would benefit from a hook/ring next to the sink for a hand towel & the rail on the wall is very loose and needs securing, meaning there’s nowhere to hang towels to dry after use. No issues at all with parking..we used the Rydal Rd carpark a cpl of times, which is just a short walk from the house & always managed to find a spot on the roadside outside when arriving back after 6pm for overnight parking. Lovely stay, would recommend

  • "We really enjoyed our stay at Rothay."

    Very clean, bed really comfortable, lounge had fabulous views. The kitchen is light and airy and is very well equipped. The loacation is excellant and a parking permit provided…..we had to park on Low Fold all the others were full

  • "Excellent cottage ."

    really enjoyed the location , in the centre of Ambleside, and the view from the lounge . Kitchen generally well equipped ( but missing a tin opener!) Would definitely stay here again - very comfortable.

  • "Lovely house, central and comfortable."

    Very helpful general info regarding area etc. Only comment is toilet seat needs replacing ASAP, cannot be repaired as bolt broken, also towel rail in bathroom needs refixing. We loved our stay, as advised the stairs up to top of house are a challenge!

  • "Fantastic property."

    Very well equipped particularly in the kitchen. Only downside is the property is not available to let again until January 2026 as we would loved to have booked a return visit!

  • "We absolutely loved our stay at the cottage and it was actually better than we hoped for ."

    It was central for everything but was far enough so it was nice and peaceful plus the patio was nice to sit out in as the weather was good enough. The kitchen was well equipped and was nice to have a proper fridge freezer plus all the extras and the cleaning pack plus coffee machine was a bonus. Thanks for a lovely stay and hope to return soon.

  • "We had a lovely stay at Rothay cottage it was aperfect place to stay right in the heart of Ambleside with restaurants pubs and walks right on the door step."

    Having never visited Ambleside before we found it to be ideal for everything we needed. The little touches like washing equipment, tea and coffee items also condiments all went towards making the holiday. Also the credit at Ghyll deli was such a treat, we absolutely loved their bread and vegetarian pies such a kind gesture which was very much appreciated. The view from the lounge was anazing and the bed was very comfortable. We would love to return in the future and l highly recommend this holiday home, as a home from home.

The property

Rothay cottage is a cosy traditional stone terraced cottage situated in the quiet hidden gem of the Millans Park area of Ambleside, just a short distance form the vibrant cafes, shops, restaurants, pubs and cinemas available in this popular lake District National Park village.

This charming Ambleside cottage is ideally located for families or friends wishing to discover the majestic Lake District countryside.

Set over three floors, this rural cottage has 1king size bedroom (first floor) and a second-floor twin bedroom and sitting room that maximises the breath-taking views of Wansfell, with glimpses of Kirkstone Pass.

Relax just taking in the stunning views, or enjoy the smart TV or selection of maps, books, games and jigsaws in the cosy room.

The ground floor boasts a good sized hallway for coats and those muddy boots.

There is a well stocked excellent kitchen and a bright, airy dining area with patio doors leading out to a small enclosed patio area—a wonderful space to sit with a cup of coffee as you plan the day's activities.

As the evenings draw to a close, a king-size bedroom awaits you to catch your night's rest, while the bathroom provides plenty of space to indulge with a leisurely soak in the bath or a refreshing rinse in the shower, both on the first floor.

A few minutes walk from this Ambleside cottage will take you to the beautiful Rothay Park set in tranquil surroundings, with the River Rothay tumbling alongside, a perfect place for a dog walk.

Walk along the river, cross the stepping stones, and you will come to Rydal and Grasmere beyond.

Walks directly from the cottage include Loughrigg and Wansfell Pike.

Ambleside is located at the top of Lake Windermere, and steamboats depart regularly to take you to Bowness and Lakeside.

With the pretty Lakeland villages of Hawkshead and Elterwater within a half-hour drive, Rothay Cottage is the perfect base for your Lake District holiday at any time of the year

Grasmere 4.4 miles; Windermere 4.7 miles; Keswick 16.7 miles.

Lying at the northern tip of Lake Windermere, England’s largest lake, Ambleside with its numerous shops makes a superb base for touring the central Lakes, with Grasmere and the Langdale Valley just a short drive away. There is plenty to do here - cruises, boat trips, and watersports on Lake Windermere itself and the lakeside at Waterhead with parkland offering lovely views down the lake and a short stretch of beach. A walk in the other direction, following Stock Ghyll through woodland, will bring you to the entrancing waterfall of Stock Ghyll Force. Along with the Lake and the great walking on offer, Ambleside is also famous for its annual rushbearing ceremony and the diminutive 17th century “Bridge House” - one of the most photographed buildings in the Lake District and now the National Trust Information Centre. Ambleside has plenty of restaurants and pubs to suit all tastes from great fish & chips to its two Michelin Star restaurants and all tastes in between are catered for.
