  • "This was a long awaited trip from last December where snow hindered travel."

Was worried first as there was scaffolding up and thought that there may have been work taking place, but there no workmen, and no noise, the place was so peaceful. As the property is off the main road, down a short lane, there's no traffic noise or people passing. The property had everything we needed. Ideal setting being just a 10 minute walk from Waterhead to get the boat to Bo'ness and a 10 minute walk into Ambleside. Loved the place. Would definitely recommend and definitely will be back.

  • "Silver How was a perfect base for us in Ambleside."

The house was first class - clean, warm, comfortable, quiet and a short walk into Ambleside or Waterhead. We would definitely stay again.

  • "No problems."

  • "Silver How is the best property we have rented in the lakes so far, delightful location, very well maintained, my wife complained about a broken tea pot and clothes airer - this was dealt with immediately and a follow up call received within 48 hours so we have nothing but praise both for Lakelovers and the property."

    Excellent all round.

  • "Silver Howe is in a great location for an easy 10 minute walk into Ambleside town centre and set far enough away from the road to be quiet and peaceful."

It’s spacious inside with outside seating overlooking a field and small wood at the back. The wi-fi and smart TV both worked well. We found the sofa and armchairs were too soft with little support for our liking - others may find them ok though. When we booked Silver How, it was listed by Sykes as a new holiday let, but it was clear when we arrived that it isn’t and is in need of some TLC. It’s a shame, because mostly the shortcomings are minor and easily fixable and if they were, I’d have given a 5 star rating. In no particular order, these were the shortcomings we found: * There was an Iron but no ironing board * There was a dustpan and brush but no broom for larger areas. * In the absence of a broom we tried the vacuum cleaner, but quickly switched it off due to the foul smell it gave out when running. * The provided clothes airer is unusable, due to worn clips, which causes it to collapse as soon a you hang anything on it. * There are no instructions for the washing machine. * Couldn’t use the ceiling lights in dining area as they flicker. * The washing machine door is hanging off due to a cracked hinge - it still closes with care though and works. * We were initially unable to lock the back door because the mechanism needed lubricating (a drop of WD40 sorted it out). * The bottom hinge on the back door is loose and broken. * The toilet seat downstairs is poorly fitted and won’t stay in the up position - just annoying really. * The cold tap lever in kitchen was very loose and hanging off (tightening with an Allen key improved it). * The door seal on the shower cubicle (bathroom off the landing) is hanging off. * The seal on the shower screen (in the en suite) is cracked and falls off if the screen is moved to access bath. * The double bed is badly stained. We discovered this when we had to rotate the mattress (one end seemed to have sunk). However the sheets and mattress protector were clean. * At the top of the stairs the roof seems to be leaking with a large damp stain on wall/ceiling. * General cleaning could be better - a lot of dust behind the beds, sofa and chairs, with cobwebs everywhere, including a large spider community in the en-suite extractor fan.

  • "Another excellent stay at Silver How."

Amazing setting looking onto a beautiful meadow waking up to a chorus of birdsong and deer roaming across. The cottage has everything you need to make it a home from home..Great location 10 mins walk to town centre but tucked away to make it a peaceful retreat.

  • "Perfect location, beautiful cottage with wildlife on your doorstep."

Lovely and peaceful for a relaxing holiday. Would be nice if there was a dryer, and timer on microwave needs attention.

  • "A brilliant base for a Lakes holiday."

Very comfortable, well equipped and clean. The location is perfect, just outside the main town, but within very easy walking distance. Plus plenty of options for walking from the doorstep. Having parking was a great bonus. We would definitely stay here again! Highly recommend.

  • "Thank you for a lovely comfortable stay The cottage was clean , well equipped and cosy on those cool days Lovely views."

A bonus to see the deer in the garden We had a lovely Christmas stay the only suggestion would be with booking over Christmas it would have been nice to see some festive decorations. Especially when Xmas week is more expensive than off peak. But this wouldn’t reflect our overall view of the cottage and we would definitely return . We would highly recommend so go ahead and book !!

  • "We have been staying in Lakes cottages for over 25 years and this has to be in the top 3."

.A well equipped kitchen, extremely comfortable and spacious, brilliant location with stunning views front and back. Privileged to have deer gracing our company just outside. Can't recommend this cottage more highly. We will be booking again for the Spring very shortly.

  • "The location of the property was great, however some mirrors at the end of the driveway would be of great assistance."

You are partway into the road before being able to fully confirm your exit is clear. General provision in the cottage was great however some equipment (teapot, glasses) and furnishings (floor lamp in lounge lampshade) are in poor repair. Plentiful crockery, cutlery and cookware was great. Nightlights upstairs and downstairs were a welcome addition particularly for the kids. Soft furnishings/throws were lovely and made cottage VERY cosy! Another point which you may need to address with council, we put bin out as advised on the Thursday, it wasn't emptied. Bin wagon did come up the driveway but totally missed for no3.

About the location

AMBLESIDE

Grasmere 4.4 miles; Windermere 4.7 miles; Keswick 16.7 miles.

Lying at the northern tip of Lake Windermere, England’s largest lake, Ambleside makes a superb base for touring the central Lakes, with Grasmere and the Langdale Valley just a short drive away. There is plenty to do here - cruises, boat trips and watersports on Lake Windermere itself and numerous shops, restaurants and pubs in the village to suit all tastes. On the lakeside at Waterhead, the parkland offers lovely views down the lake and a short stretch of beach, whilst a walk in the other direction, following Stock Ghyll through woodland, will bring you to the entrancing waterfall of Stock Ghyll Force. Along with the Lake and the great walking on offer, Ambleside is also famous for its annual rushbearing ceremony and the diminutive 17th century “Bridge House” - one of the most photographed buildings in the Lake District and now the National Trust Information Centre.
