  • "This is a lovely cottage in a perfect location."

Five minutes walk to Brockhole, a few minutes drive to Windermere/Bowness or Ambleside. Ample room for six people with a lovely open plan layout downstairs. Our grandchildren are paddle boarders and we found a lovely spot at Middleground along the Bowness road which has a car park with toilets and is a short walk down to the lakeside, or if you’re lucky, a lay-by just before the car park which has access to the lake if you’re able to carry equipment a bit further. Just a couple of things missing which is why I’ve only given a 4 for some questions. The outside light is not working and, as there is a step up to the door, can be quite dangerous for younger children (and sometimes adults too). We couldn’t find a kitchen sink plug anywhere so it was difficult to clean grill and grill pan. The information folder told us there were details in a basket by the front door about refuse and estate rules but there was nothing in the basket other than fire instructions. Might I also suggest a casserole dish. We ate in almost every night and we did manage but it would have been much easier to have one. And yes the downstairs en-suite needs updating (previous reviewer) but it was spotlessly clean. Please don’t let any of this put you off staying here. It really is a lovely place and we will definitely stay her again.

  • "Our stay at Middlerigg was fine and generally matched the description given however, the shower in the en-suite needs a little TLC."

The shower hose looks unsightly and leaks despite this being highlighted in a review in June and the shower door is extremely rickety. Also the property description states there is a smart TV, but it is not.

Thank you for your comments. You will be pleased to hear that the ensuite shower room is being refurbished later this year. The TV says it is a Veira SMART TV but my all tech son tells me its not a 'smart 'TV as people know it - not sure i understand the difference - sorry, i will update the description. Please note you can access Netflix and other Apps through the Blu-ray player, details are provided in the property manual. I hope this did not spoil your stay too much. Property Owner

  • "Really enjoyed our stay at Middlerigg."

Very comfortable cottage and well equipped in a lovely setting near Lake Windermere. Very nice cafe at the activity centre across the main road in easy walking distance. The Merewood Hotel is a short but steep walk from the cottage and has beautiful views and good food. The Cottage was very quiet considering the main road is just down the lane and only a few miles from Ambleside which we really liked. Lots of shops in Ambleside and quaint cinema with vegetarian restaurant which was excellent. The Apple pie cafe was well worth a visit. Lots of National Trust places to visit and NT parking which was great as we are members. Would definitely recommend Middlerigg, we really enjoyed our stay.

The bedrooms are spacious with large comfortable beds and roomy wardrobes. Kitchen and bathrooms are attractive and very clean. Lots of local information & loads of videos! • "A beautiful cottage."

Excellent facilities. Extremely clean. Excelled our expectations. We have stayed in many cottages over the years and can safely say that Middlerigg is one of the best. The location is perfect. Our 8 year old twins loved exploring Brockhole, especially the play park, when all the crowds had left - it doesn’t close until 8pm! I would, however, agree with a previous guest that the flush on the bathroom toilet is very difficult to use and a bit of perseverance is needed. Thank you for a wonderful stay, I have already looked into booking Middlerigg for next year.

Sorry for the late response to your feedback. This was lovely to read and thank you for your review. I love exploring Brockhole too - the grounds are always lovely any time of year - and great for children too. Yes, the toilet flush! It has been checked and all is well with it, just needs the right technique :) I look forward to welcoming you back next year Property Owner

  • "We had a lovely stay."

The house was spotless, the kitchen was the best we have had in a rental property- in terms of equipment provided. Beds were super comfy and lovely soft blankets / fleeces etc! Parking right outside. Birds a joy to watch from the window. Lovely gardens/ surroundings. Great location. Great DVD selection for wet days! Netflix could be a handy addition (in bad weather!), but we couldn't find it to log in. The only downsides, it was very draughty by the windows (it needs thicker / longer curtains) or thick blinds. We found it quite cold, but our house at home is cool, so we are used to it. And the upstairs toilet flush was temperamental, I left a note at the property as I think it needs looking at. We had a great stay and would definitely return!

Thank you Hayley for your lovely feedback. I am so pleased you enjoyed your stay and that your expectations were met. It is so lovely to get feedback and your comments are noted and will be taken on board. I have asked maintenance to have a look at the upstairs toilet flush to ensure it functions as it should. It is possible to get Netflix if guests have their own account - i will look into providing more detailed instructions in this regard. Yes the location is beautiful and i look forward to welcoming you and your family back Property Owner

The location is well situated for all the local attractions. The cottage looks like it has been recently decorated and fitted out. Has everything you need. The beds are super comfy with quality bed linen. The downstairs bedroom was perfect for our 86yr old guest. WiFi worked throughout the house. Although there is no garden there is a small bistro set to use at the front of the house. It sits within a complex of many houses although it was very quiet and we weren’t aware of the many properties around us. Although not cheap it is a quality cottage and I would recommend it to anyone.

  • "An absolutely fantastic stay at Middlerigg for our family of 4."

We have stayed in the next door cottage for the past two summers, and Middlerigg lived up to the expectations we had. Perfect for visiting Brockholes and easy access to both Windermere and Ambleside. The cottage had lots of great facilities for a family and we will definitely be booking to stay again. The only thing missing for us is a stair gate at the top of the stairs, which would just put our minds more at ease with having young children and their room being right next to the stairs. The one next door at Pudding Cottage is very discrete and rolls up, so doesn’t get in the way for visitors with no children.

Thank you for your comments. I am so pleased you enjoyed your stay. I will definitely look to install a stairgate as you suggest as I understand this would alleviate any concerns for safety. I look forward to welcoming you back to Middlerigg in the future Property Owner

Other than that is was comfortable and had everything needed. I would surely recommend and return.

Thank you for your recent feedback regarding your stay at Middlerigg. The outside seating is located in the communal gardens and is shared. We have updated the description to display this better as I can understand this being a little confusing. Regarding an extra key we have always provided 1 as a standard practice and the use of the Key safe helps if you are coming back to the property at different timings. If you need an extra key in the future please just ask us prior to your stay and we can arrange for one to be added. We are glad to hear you had a lovely stay overall and we look forward to welcoming you back in the future. Many thanks Property Owner

About the location

AMBLESIDE

Grasmere 4.4 miles; Windermere 4.7 miles; Keswick 16.7 miles.

Lying at the northern tip of Lake Windermere, England’s largest lake, Ambleside makes a superb base for touring the central Lakes, with Grasmere and the Langdale Valley just a short drive away. There is plenty to do here - cruises, boat trips and watersports on Lake Windermere itself and numerous shops, restaurants and pubs in the village to suit all tastes. On the lakeside at Waterhead, the parkland offers lovely views down the lake and a short stretch of beach, whilst a walk in the other direction, following Stock Ghyll through woodland, will bring you to the entrancing waterfall of Stock Ghyll Force. Along with the Lake and the great walking on offer, Ambleside is also famous for its annual rushbearing ceremony and the diminutive 17th century “Bridge House” - one of the most photographed buildings in the Lake District and now the National Trust Information Centre.
