Immaculate property Extremely well appointed fitted kitchen, plenty of cupboard space and lovely big table which accommodated our 1000 piece jigsaw and still had plenty of room for us to eat at ! Nice touch of basic provisions being provided for our arrival - bread/croissants/milk/orange juice/wine, all much appreciated Quality of cottage was evident everywhere from lovely bed linen to nice touches such as provision of small torches at bedside as very dark going to the en-suite during the night Plenty of info in cottage(laminated for easy cleaning) Would highly recommend

“Fabulous little cottage.”

The only disappointment was that we were so warm we didn’t need to light the stove - even when temps outside were 7 degrees. Hardly used the CH either. The living area is a delight in the mornings with the high windows letting in all the morning sun. All mod cons but with a lovely traditional feel. And wonderful lights everywhere. We felt we were in a remote part of Cumbria, but the motorway (unheard) is 2 minutes away and Penrith is a great little town just a short drive away. And not far to Borrowdale, Ullswater and the rest of the. Or there Lakes. Highly recommended.

“Though we were not allowed into the property until later because of extra cleaning because of covid we found dirty tableware which we had to wash before using also the chopping board.”

There where lots of cobwebs particularly in the twin bedded room, there was a brochure under the double bed so had not been hoovered properly, also dead insect on skirting board in twin bedroom. Trying to get the DVD to work was a work of art, following the instructions in the folder didn't achieve anything, possibly because of different remote. The views were disappointing as being an upside down house we expected much better. The cottage was certainly not older person friendly, it needed a banister on the other side of the wall at the bottom of the stairs.

“The location was good, off the motorway at junction 41 and within minutes we were at Swallow's Nest, ideal location for visiting Ullswater ( for walking the Ullswater Way ) and for Keswick, such a lovely relaxing cottage to come back to after our days out.”

So handy having the Booths Supermarket at Penrith, it was good to be able to stock up on supplies en route. Only had a 3 day break and with so much to do around the area, would definitely like to come back for longer.

We trawled the internet for hours trying to find the perfect Lakeland cottage and we were truly delighted. Swallows Nest is the perfect place to look forward to coming home to after a hard days walking. Debbie and Derek have made the perfect holiday destination for us and thankyou for going out of your way making us feel very welcome. We have had a wonderful week visiting Kendal, Windermere, Keswick, Carlisle and Penrith not to mention miles of walking around Buttermere, Scale Force, Derwent water and up to Aira Force at Ullswater and Pooley Bridge. We were blessed with good weather and stunning views but the crowning glory goes to Debbie and Derek for providing Swallows Nest. We have booked again for 2017.

“5th Visit”

Back from another February stay to celebrate our wedding anniversary. Our family chose to return because your holiday starts as you step through the door. Everything is maintained to a meticulous standard by Debbie who welcomes you just like family. We love the area with Penrith being only 5 mins away and it's full of shops, restaurants, take-sways etc, as well as several supermarkets from Booths to Aldi. The stunning lake Ullswater is your closest lake around 15 minutes drive away. I love everything about Swallow's Nest and will certainly be returning soon.

Debbie provided us with a cot, highchair and stair gate for our 7 month old baby. It was clean and comfortable and we had a great time. One downside was that the rooms are very small and we couldn't fit the small travel cot in and close the bedroom door so we had to move our double bed up to the wall so the cot would fit next to our bed. But besides for that, all was perfect! Thank you Debbie and family for the wonderful friendly service. Gerald and Rebecca

We have stayed several times at Swallows Nest and each time it has been perfect! The cottage is contemporary and stylish yet feels very homely and cosy! The cottage has everything you could want and two bathrooms make it ideal for a family. The hosts are so friendly and accommodating and nothing is too much trouble. Penrith with Booths supermarket is less than 10 mins away as is Ullswater. Fabulous and we cannot wait to stay again!

This was our first visit to both the Lake District and to Swallow's Nest. We didn't get the best of weather but despite that we still went out each day to explore the area and admire the stunning scenery. We felt totally at home in the beautiful cottage and nothing was too much trouble for the owners to make our stay so comfortable and enjoyable. We enjoyed the freedom to come and go as we pleased and, whilst our accommodation was in a peaceful rural location, we were only minutes away from nearby pubs and Penrith was just a short drive away. We look forward to making a return visit in the future. The property is upside down insomuch that the two bedrooms (one with en suite) and bathroom are on the ground floor with stairs leading up to the living room, kitchen and dining area.

We stayed here for a week in March and were made ever so welcome by our hosts. A lovely guide around the property and a welcoming drink was a very nice touch. The property has been very well and thoughtfully constructed from and old stable area and everything you need is provided, beds extremely comfortable, even WIFI. It's an upside down design which worked very well for us. Warm throughout with underfloor heating downstairs was always nice to enter after a cold long walking day. Our hosts were always happy to have a chat and see if anything else was needed or chat about the area and events. Very close to the M6 junction 41 exit so no long drive down country lanes to search in the dark. This gives easy access to all parts. We will certainly come back for future stays.

“High quality cottage”

As soon as you enter the cottage the quality of material used is fantastic. Every room is finished to a high standard. The master bedroom and its en suite have heated floors, as does the other bedroom and the main bathroom. Upstairs in the kitchen and lounge which is spacious with comfy seats, the kitchen has everything you need. Upstairs has radiators, the water pressure is fantastic with hot water straight away. The wifi is a little slow to what I'm used to but nothing to get upset about. The owners are very nice, not in your face all the time but there if you need them. The cottage is in a quiet village but close enough to main roads. Overall a great place to go to for a week or a few days.

The property

Penrith 4 miles.

A fabulous semi-detached, sandstone barn conversion, situated in the small hamlet of Catterlen, four miles from Penrith.

Offering delightful accommodation, this upside down Penrith cottage has an open plan living area with woodburner, exposed beams and French doors that open onto a wonderful Juliet balcony.

Downstairs, this Penrith cottage features two light and airy bedrooms, one of which has an en-suite shower room and lovely underfloor heating.
