    “Fabulous but needs some attention”

This cottage is lovely; it is furnished to a very high standard; has amazing views; and is convenient for both Ulverston and Barrow in Furness. This cottage is lovely; it is furnished to a very high standard; has amazing views; and is convenient for both Ulverston and Barrow in Furness. I would like to think that we were just unfortunate in our timing when it is in need of some TLC and maintenance. The toilet roll holder in the bathroom was loose on arrival and fell off completely after a couple of days; the handle on one of the wardrobe drawers was hanging off and, looking at the scratches on the woodwork, I would suggest had been for some time; the right hand seal on the dishwasher was loose and had to be re-seated before use. The cistern on one of the toilets would not stop filling which resulted in a constant trickle of water, we managed to find a position for the flush handle to sit which minimized the water flow and, "luckily" our friends had left so we used their bathroom. Also in our bathroom, the extractor fan did not work and, on the last morning the "string" of lights under the bath came loose. The biggest issue was the under floor heating which was so hot that we had to have the doors/ windows open just to make it bearable. In fairness when I reported the heating, an engineer was dispatched the next day and the problem was solved. If truth be told we should have got someone out to solve the toilet flush but, requiring a maintenance person twice in a 6 day stay is not a good average. If the maintenance was up to scratch I would have given this cottage 5 stars with no hesitation and am very keen to go again later in the year by which time I like to think it is up to the standard that it has the potential to be. As it stands, I would not recommend Primrose Cottage but if the simple repairs are carried out I would not hesitate, hence my rating below.

About the location

ALDINGHAM

Ulverston 5 miles.

On the coast looking across to Morecambe Bay is the small village of Aldingham, said to have once been a mile long but, as legend says, many of the early cottages were washed away by storms and tidal waves. Aldingham had the reputation of being a smugglers’ village, with brandy from France and tobacco from America supposedly hidden in the church crypt. The village is close to the spectacular Furness Abbey, and the ancient market town of Ulverston is just 5 miles away, and still has an authentic feel and community spirit. The town boasts a street market every Thursday and Saturday and many festivals throughout the year, including an amazing lantern procession in September and a superb Dickensian weekend on the last weekend of November. It is also the birthplace of Stan Laurel and home to the only Laurel and Hardy museum in the world! With all the attractions of the Lake District National Park and the sandy beaches and good birdwatching of the Furness coast close by, this quiet and peaceful area has plenty to offer!
