Lovely cottage very spacious and very well equipped Rain leaked in one bedroom Couple of things - don’t want to be asked to review my holiday on day 2 Don’t like being reminded I’m going home tomorrow and don’t expect to have to strip beds on departure for a cottage costing over £250 a night

Great locality, cleanliness and fully equipped. We will return!

  • "Great cottage, very clean and had everything we needed."

Quiet location with a pub 5 minutes walk away and some really good walks on your doorstep. Great location for visiting the southern lakes.

  • "- House is well furnished and appointed and we had a lovely time - General cleanliness could have been better."

There was visible dirt in the en suite and the bathroom (mould / mildew and dust on flat surfaces); under the sofas was dirty with wrapping from a previous guest’s gifts; there was a used bandage under the bed in the second bedroom. Basically, a deeper clean is needed in my opinion. - Garden is lovely but it’s a shame there is no BBQ area.

  • "We loved it!"

The kitchen is great, really well laid out with pretty much every kitchen gadget available. The rooms are all lovely, comfy and it definitely feels more homely than a lot of the buy-to-let properties in the Lakes. Would definitely rent it again, and recommend it to others.

  • "Excellent cottage in a beautiful quite location."

Internally it’s been really well kept and unlike many cottages it lives up to the advertising photos. We found it really well equipped, cozy and a great place to stay.

The cottage provided everything we could possibly want for a week’s stay. The garden was so pretty that it was a joy to sit and enjoy the fabulous view. We’ll look forward to coming back for another stay.

  • "This is a beautiful cottage in a wonderful location."

The facilities are excellent with an extremely well-equipped kitchen, excellent guidance manual, comfy beds and bedding, cosy furnishings, and lots of thoughtful details ( a useful torch, handy hooks in hallway). I would very happily recommend it and will almost certainly book to stay again.

  • "Cottage was lovely and clean."

Well equipped and great location. Loved our stay. Only minor points would be; not being able to check in until 4pm, but be out by 10. Also have always had a welcome pack in all places we have previously stayed. Obviously not required, but always been a appreciated as a thoughtful touch. The only one we were provided with was a cleaning gift box.

  • "I was very impressed by the overall standard of the property - the beds were super comfortable, the kitchen very well stocked, plenty of space available in the cottage, the lovely well cared for garden and ideally situated for a visit to the Lake District."

One thing to mention is that sometimes the tap water was very cloudy and as I wasn’t sure whether this was usual in the area or not, I just bought a 10 litre box of water for drinking.

  • "We had a great week staying in Birchmill Cottage."

It was a fantastic location to explore the area around Windermere, and easy to get across the lake to Coniston and Hilltop, as well as up to Ambleside. The cottage had everything we needed and was clean and spacious. We felt we were in the middle of beautiful countryside whilst being well placed for the lake, Bowness, Brockhole and the ferry.

Stone-flagged floors, exposed beams, and gloriously soothing views from every window make this a really special place to discover and get away from it all! Blessed with outstanding views and a lovely private garden with furniture for you to sit out and soak it all in, Birchmill Cottage is a luxurious property set amidst plenty of quiet country lanes and footpaths to be explored or for walking your dogs, who are very welcome here. Your party will certainly enjoy the cosiness of the traditionally beamed lounge, with its characterful wood-burner set in a rustic, timber-linteled hearth.

And while enjoying the old world charm of the crackling fire and the blissful country surroundings, you can keep the modern world at your fingertips with the inclusive WiFi.

In the rural back-country, a few miles away from bustling Bowness, Birchmill Cottage sits in the lovely hamlet of Crook.

Tucked down a peaceful country lane, this is the perfect spot to escape the world.

The Winster and Lyth Valleys are green and picture-book pretty, garnished with gorgeous damson blossom in spring. Yet the many attractions of Bowness are close by at Birchmill, and with Ambleside and the central fells not far away, this is a great location from which to explore the Lakes.

You will certainly want to spend a day cruising Lake Windermere on the famous steamers that frequent Bowness Pier.

And closer to home, the Sun Inn at Crook, just a stroll away, has a growing reputation for its tasty fayre and selection of real ales.

Not a bad way to wind down before bed after a day getting out and about in the beautiful Lake District!

About the location

Windermere 8 miles.

A historic market town with a fine reputation for shopping, Kendal nestles on the banks of the River Kent and is known as the Southern Gateway to the Lakes. Its old cobbled lanes and byways branch off the attractive main street, and the stone ruins of 12th century Kendal Castle sit perched on a hill with views over the town. Visit The Abbot Hall Art Gallery, its regular collection holding portraits by Kendal born George Romney and works by Turner and Ruskin, with other exhibitions through its links with the Tate. Both Sizergh Castle and Levens Hall with its superb Topiary Garden are nearby, as are limestone escarpments for easy walking, offering thrilling views of the Lakeland Mountains, the Howgills and Morecambe Bay. Kendal itself is ideally placed for exploring South Lakeland, the Yorkshire Dales and beyond. With other attractions such as Kendal Museum and the Museum of Lakeland Life, the fascinating Quaker Tapestry, Lake Windermere and the wider National Park within easy reach, Kendal provides a superb base for a relaxing break.
