About the location

DUFTON

Appleby-in-Westmorland 3 miles; Penrith 13 miles.

The attractive, unspoilt rural village of Dufton is situated in the North Pennines AONB. It is a perfect base for walkers and cyclists. There are many scenic walks from the village; try climbing Dufton Pike, or follow the Pennine Way up a spectacular glacial valley to High Cup Nick. It is ideally placed for exploring the Lake District and Eden Valley. The village has a pub, which serves good food, an Agricultural Show held on the last Saturday in August, and is just three miles from the historic town of Appleby. At the heart of the lush Eden Valley, Appleby-in-Westmorland is one of the loveliest towns in the north of England and was originally the county town of Westmorland. Appleby is a major stop on the Settle-to-Carlisle Railway, which is one of the most beautiful railway journeys in Britain; still today, many of the old steam trains wend their way along this line and over the awe-inspiring Ribblehead viaduct. With both the magnificent Lake District and newly expanded Yorkshire Dales National Parks within easy reach, this is an ideal holiday location.
