  • "Fabulous, clean, cozy and comfy cottage with a really thoughtful welcome back which we loved."

Thank you and next time we visit the area we'll definitely be checking availability at this cottage

  • "Lovely cottage in a great location."

Extremely clean and well equipped. One minor issue for us was the soft mattress - much softer than we're used to which meant we weren't very comfortable in the bed (and we only have a standard mattress at home i.e. it's not that we're used to a particularly firm mattress). It's personal preference as many people had mentioned in the guest book that they found the beds very comfy - so just a warning to anyone who doesn't like soft mattresses. Otherwise a great experience - perfect for exploring Hadrian's Wall and Northumberland National Park.

Although located on an A Road the traffic was not busy and hardly noticeable. Mark the owner and his family live next door and are very friendly and helpful. Ask him about the riverside walk to the bridge towards the village. In the village we found a friendly pub, The Crown, that had a good selection of local beer and they had great quality food. Northumberland is certainly a hidden gem, beautiful countryside, forests, moorland and spectacular beaches. Hardly anyone around!

  • "Nice cottage in a good location for Hadrians Wall and some good local walks."

Located alongside a fairly busy road but nice views from the small enclosed rear garden. Just about clean enough but we didn't feel any particular additional effort had been made taking into account the current Coronavirus situation. However overall we enjoyed our week there.

As previous comments posted for 1 Dunkirk Cottages hopefully show, it is always my top priority to deliver a well-presented and clean cottage for each and every visit. I will of course review my procedures in this area to see if any further improvements can be made towards this. I would like to state precautions have been taken in response to the current Coronavirus epidemic. Most of these are not immediately obvious to visitors as a lot of preventative measures are included in the change-over process that takes place between visits. This includes the steam cleaning of all non-removable soft furnishings that includes the sofa, easy chairs, rug, fabric headboards etc. All hard surface surfaces, with exception to those that are used for food preparation, after initial cleaning now are also coated with a specialist anti-viral spray. Hand soap is supplied at each sink/basin as well as hand sanitiser being provided. All removable covers and linen are professionally laundered and only replaced on the morning of a visitor/s arrival from a sealed plastic bag with appropriate handling. It has been my purposeful intention to deliver the cottage to visitors as a normal homely environment as possible, whilst taking the above mentioned precautions and more, so as to provide as much as is possible a restful break from the current situation. It is close to Hadrian’s Wall, near a good pub in the village and within range of many Northumbrian attractions. In this time of lockdown we felt completely safe, as it was really clean and well looked after. There was a warm welcome when we arrived, with extra homemade jams, bread, milk and butter, as well as hand sanitiser too. The shower was great and the fixtures and fittings simple and comfortable. One of the best cottages we’ve visited,

  • "The property is well situated for exploring the Hadrian's Wall and Kielder Water areas."

The owner was very helpful in providing his garage as a place to store our bikes. Very nice property with lovely wooden beams and decor, but with one or two minor niggles. The property is largely lovely, but the temperature inside is very inconsistent because of issues with doors. There is no kitchen door and the dining table is right by the open doorway, next to the front door. This means it is a cold and draughty place to eat (though it would be fine in summer). The lounge door also does not quite close as there seems to be an issue with the hinges, which makes it a bit hard to heat in the evening. By contrast the upstairs rapidly overheats and can easily be too warm to sleep unless you remember to turn the upstairs radiators off early enough. I would suggest that the owner fits a kitchen door and attends to the hinges on the lounge door; apart from the comfort of the guests I suspect this would result in a substantial saving in heating costs. There is a wood burning stove in the lounge which would probably make the lounge warm even with the door problem, but not being familiar with how to use one I did not attempt to. Anyway fixing the door would render it largely unnecessary.

  • "A smashing cottage in a decent spot for exploring Northumberland."

For example, if you are interested in Hadrian's Wall you have the perfect spot to start following it both ways. Some decent little pubs/hotels in the surrounding villages with the larger Hexham and Corbridge close by, lovely places, full of history. I have visited Northumberland/County Durham many times, stayed all over and I must say this cottage is up there with the best for comfort etc. and location. Recommended.

  • "This was a fantastic cottage, very comfortable and the first cottage to provide decent WiFi and smart television facilities."

Further research by us would have revealed no rear garden, disappointing as there’s nowhere for the kids to play outside. The small stone terrace with a table and chairs on the front does not justify a “garden” in my opinion. This stone terrace also happens to be a few metres from an unrestricted A road, and the traffic flies past at ridiculous speeds making it very noisy inside the house at times. A fantastic property let down by its location and lack of garden.

A nice Welcome Tray of Milk, Butter, Bread, Tea, Coffee etc was a lovely bonus. The only downside was not enough garden area to sit outside and enjoy a drink or eats. There was easy access to all the places we wanted to visit on our holiday.

Its location is on a main road and the traffic noise could be a distraction particularly in warmer weather with the windows open.
