The location is beautiful and so relaxing with gorgeous walks all around so I have already booked again for next year. Inside you have everything you need for a home from home experience. Although the summer has finished and the autumn has arrived the property was so warm and cosy from the moment I walked in. The kitchen is well equipped and the tea, coffee, milk and biscuits are a thoughtful touch. Everything is spotlessly clean and I can't find any faults except that I wish I could have stayed longer as it is so relaxing. Can't wait for next year!

The views are amazing and ever changing. As the weather changes so do the colours of the landscape. We found it to be fabulous. If you are after somewhere remote this is it. The neighbours, cows, sheep, hares, deer, owl, oh and the weasel are all very quiet and well behaved. We would recommend this property if you are after a peaceful break. Thank you.

Field barn was ok but the freezer needed to be defrosted and the covid labels are out of date and a bit disturbing as we both are carers and went through that difficult period . We found everything else about the barn really lovely . The area its self is outstanding and has really lovely walks and plenty of wildlife to watch . Amazing holiday we will definitely recommend a stay there and we will definitely be staying at field barn again .

1 man and his dog arrived at the Barn during the tail end of ex-hurricane Ernesto and the first day was Storm Liliana. The build and design of the Barn prevented any knowledge of the wind and rain unless you looked out of the windows! The facilities were excellent, even including a George Foreman, the heating was easy to use and worked a treat. Lovely luxury touches like the softest quality bath towels showed the care and quality that the owners have insisted on. The provided internet however was worse than old school dial up due to the location, however my phone on EE had full and fast signal so online activities could still be enjoyed. Even the infamous slow dripping tap in the kitchen sink couldn't detract from a perfect relaxing break, thank you.

We had a lovely stay and enjoyed the seclusion. Whilst the property does have wifi its very intermittent and slow due to its location so if you are planning to stream anything or work you will struggle. It would be helpful to have this in the information. However if you want to get away from everything and relax this is a great spot. A note about Lakelovers - we logged a query with them on WhatsApp three days before our break but they apparently they were so inundated with requests that we kept getting automated updates prompting us to reply 'Yes' if we still required an answer. I would suggest contacting them another way as WhatsApp was very poor.

The barn is super clean and tidy with one of the best equipped kitchens I've seen (there was even a george Foreman grill!). Field Barn is so secluded and so quiet (all you can hear is sheep baa'ing), we all slept amazingly after a day in the fresh air. We were lucky enough to get some decent dry weather so made the most of the many walks around the area with our dog who absolutely loved it. I would absolutely not hesitate to recommend this place to anyone who wants a nice relaxing and quiet countryside stay.

The views were amazing. The only thing I would say is that you need a new tin opener and the kitchen tap dripped. Also, to ask guests to strip the bed is frankly a cheek! It's not the guest's responsibility to help the cleaner! We're not in COVID now! Maybe pay the cleaner more to do their job. We've stayed in dozens of cottages and have NEVER been asked to strip the bed before. Hotels don't ask you to do it so how come an expensive cottage would??? Oh and I think the TV was far too small. I would expect a large TV in such a large room, to watch after long hikes. Other than that the Cottage was pleasant. Obviously the steep spiral staircase might put some people off but it was fine for us.

My only criticism would be the sofa and chair could do with changing as they are not very comfortable, the sofa has a definite ridge going along it, very odd. And the stairs could do with a handrail on the other side with the rope one needs tightening at the end. Did t enjoy the stairs but coped! Great visit and I'm sure we'll be returning!

  • "We had such a fantastic stay at Field Barn, we had to book again the day we returned!"

The barn is in a remote location, overlooking Alston Moor and the surrounding Pennines, fantastic for sitting out at night and looking at the stars, with no noise other than the sheep and the crackle of a fire. The bed is extremely comfy and there is plenty of space in the bedroom for clothes and other belongings, there were two of us and we each had a wardrobe. The bathroom was lovely and bright and the water was nice and hot, perfect after a long day of walking. We can’t express enough how wonderful the upstairs space is, the kitchen is well equipped, the fridge/freezer is spacious enough for supplies for a week, and the oven/cooker is modern and easy to use. We especially enjoyed the coffee machine in the mornings. The sofas were comfy and the juliette balcony gave us lovely views over the moor. We stayed for five days and didn’t have the TV on at all as there was no need with the scenery! There’s also a porch in the entrance to leave muddy shoes and to hang coats. Alston is around a 50min walk away, and the nearest pub in Nenthead is around 15/20 minutes walk, however, we couldn’t see any need to leave in the evenings as we enjoyed sitting out with the dog and a glass of wine. 10/10 stay - we would recommend Field Barn to anyone. We'd like to thank the hosts for providing such a perfect and genuinely lovely place and being great with communication throughout.

We liked the remote position and walked into Alston from the cottage a few times. Unfortunately the settee and chair were uncomfortable and so was the bed. The shower worked intermittently meaning sometimes we needed to hold the on/off switch with one hand and try to shower with the other (we thought it was a water saving feature to start with). Other times once pressed it worked until pressed again? The toilet handle was really loose upon arrival and on the 3rd day it come off, and I had to fit it back. The internet was really poor as in it would keep resetting itself every couple of minutes whilst using it (we had the same problem when we used BT). I know there are a few negatives in this review and we could have called the caretaker for the maintenance issues. I'm sure when the things are repaired it will make someone the perfect place to stay.

It’s a shame that, as you said, you didn’t contact us at the time. Our cleaner alerted us to the shower issue when she cleaned after you left, and our excellent local plumber fitted a new one ready for the next guests at 4pm Property Owner

The views are stunning from every side of the hills and countryside and there is plenty of outdoor space and seating to sit and enjoy this from. Everything was absolutely spotless when we got there from the kitchen area to the bedroom. Fluffy towels are provided, the kitchen has everything you need (except a tin opener); there are even rechargeable torches. My only comments for possible improvement are that the sofa, being a sofa bad, isn’t quite as comfy as a normal sofa would be. Also, whilst very comfortable, the bed is super creaky and a person moving around in the night wakes the other. I definitely think a more sturdy and less creamy bed frame would take my review to five stars instead of four. Alston is the closest town and it’s very quaint and picturesque, we loved it. There’s a Co-op and a few little gift type shops, a few pubs, a chippy and a general takeaway with Chinese, pizzas, kebabs etc All in all this was a fabulous week away

  • "Amazing location in the middle of nowhere at the end of a Rd up in the Pennines."

A farm 100 metres away, but otherwise it's sheep, Hills and wind. The field barn is more of a small tower. Upstairs is the open plan living area with a reasonable kitchen, comfortable furniture and large TV with Netflix. Candles and even a few pods for the coffee machine provided. Down stairs is a modern bathroom with simple Mira shower. The bed was comfortable with a rocking chair and plenty of wardrobe storage. Everything was fresh, clean and new , and well chosen. There were lots of ornaments and perhaps better quality John Lewis crockery etc than one might expect. Covid precautions all in place. Electric heaters were plenty to keep this place snug despite the incessant wind. Patio doors lead out to a small stone patio wraps around two sides. Sit at the picnic bench and watch the sun go down. Plenty of gravel parking, enough for a lorry. Remember, this is very rural, so access to the property is a long winding rough single track, road. Owner suggests arriving in daylight, but it wasn't hard to find, just have to be patient when driving slowly up the long winding track. Plenty of Walks up into the Hills or down into the Valley from here. Walking to Alstom takes perhaps 90 minutes, driving perhaps 10. Overall, if you want solitude or walking or raw nature, this is ideal. Can't think of anything negative to say to be honest. Was woken early one morning by a big grey sheep eating the picnic table loudly!

  • "This was our first time booking with Syresham Cottages so we weren't sure what to expect."

We were over the moon on our arrival at Field Barn, the pictures didn't do it justice. We immediately felt like we'd come home, it was such a cosy and cute cottage with everything you could need for your stay. It was lovely and clean and everything, including the bed sheets, smelled amazing. The views from every window were stunning and we woke the first morning to cute bunnies in the fields around us. There are lots of stunning walks on your doorstep which was just what we wanted and then we could retreat to the tranquility of Field Barn. As city dwellers this was a perfect place for us to relax and enjoy some peace and quiet. We will definitely be back.

Perfect for some hilly walks. Really well presented and comfortable and had everything that we needed. No WiFi but it is being installed. Great to be able to switch off. Some nice touches left by the hosts and felt very safe and clean in relation to covid-19. Would rebook.

About the location

ALSTON

Melmerby 8 miles; Penrith 18 miles; Stanhope 20 miles; Hexham 23 miles; Carlisle 29 miles; Barnard Castle 30 miles.

Alston is set in the North Pennines in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, surrounded by a unique landscape of moorland, hills, rivers and waterfalls, and is England's highest market town. This intriguing town, with its cobbled streets and fascinating nooks and crannies, was the location for ITV's productions of Jane Eyre and Oliver Twist. Alston and the North Pennines have long inspired artists and writers; the poet and writer W H Auden loved the area and today Alston is an inspiration to the craftspeople who live and work there. There is a host of unusual shops in the town including quality crafts and galleries. Take a ride on one of the lovingly-restored steam and diesel engines through the beautiful scenery of the South Tyne valley on the South Tynedale Railway which runs from Alston through to Slaggyford. The River Tyne is also noted as one of the finest salmon rivers in England and day-ticket fishing is available locally. The North Pennines used to be one of the wealthiest lead mining centres in Europe, and the Killhope Lead Mining Museum offers a great family day out with interactive exhibitions. With the drive along the A686 recognised by the AA as one of the world's best drives, and northern Cumbria, County Durham and Northumberland, all within easy reach, this makes a superb base.
