  • "This is a fantastic apartment, good location for everything we wanted to do."

Very quiet, large and comfortable apartment with everything you need for a relaxing stay. My only criticism was the bed was hard and uncomfortable for me, a thick mattress topper may help this and some of the towels were musty. But these were only minor things and we would definitely recommend this accommodation, we had a great stay.

  • "We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Wansfell."

The property is in a quite location, although only a short walk to the centre of Ambleside. Wansfell was exactly as described by Heart of the Lakes and the regular visits from deer and a large variety of birds was an added bonus. We would definitely recommend Wansfell to friends and family.

  • "A very pleasant apartment, in a good convenient location near Ambleside but surrounded by fields."

We enjoyed looking out for deer crossing the field next to the patio! The location at the rear of the building means we were largely shielded from the noise from the A5075 nearby. Unfortunately when we arrived we found a curtain pole in the living room had fallen down, with the curtains left draped over a settee. This was dealt with very quickly when we phoned to report it, with workmen fixing it promptly. But surely this should have been reported by the cleaners and sorted out before we arrived? The oven and the microwave could do with replacing - in particular the microwave time setting was hopelessly vague. With just one oven/grill and no separate grill, cooking facilities could be improved. Since our party needed one accessible bedroom with a walk in shower, we were very content with the property overall.

Thank you for your comments and we are glad that you enjoyed your stay. We were sorry that the curtain pole was not fixed by the time that you arrived. The previous guests had not reported the problem to us, but we did report it to Maintenance in the morning while doing the changeover clean. However due to Saturday being a very busy changeover day, the Maintenance team could not get to our problem until later in the day. Sorry that you didn’t like the microwave-it is brand new. • "Another lovely stay at Wansfell, stayed last year as well."

Great location with ample parking and outdoor seating. Accommodation is really good with everything you need for a home from home stay. Easy to walk into Ambleside or the lake. Great to be able to see all the local wildlife, deer, etc. Microwave could maybe renewed as it’s seen better days, but did work OK. Will hopefully be back next year.

Thank you for your kind comments, we are pleased to hear that you enjoyed your stay, and that some of the local wildlife visited. The microwave has been replaced. We hope to welcome you back. The Owner Relations Team. Property Owner

  • "Firstly, we thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Wansfell."

I travelled with my father, so we used both bedrooms. The apartment is located in a building which used to be a hotel. There are 4 other apartments in the property and a further 2 in another property at the rear. The apartment is at the rear of the main building. The whole building is surrounded by fields which have been left undeveloped, there are lots of animals and birds living around the property including deer, bats and owls. It feels very secluded but is only a 10 minute flat walk to the centre of Ambleside or to the lake in the other direction. There is ample parking. Only 2 other properties were occupied when we stayed so it was very quiet. The kitchen was well equipped, this also had a dining area - a TV would have been appreciated in this area to keep us company whilst preparing food, we also like the TV on when eating and had to resort to using the I-pad for this - not ideal. The lounge is in a separate room, it is large with 2 long sofas and a TV - there are games for kids young and old. Both bedrooms are en-suite. There were complimentary toiletries. The bed linen and towels were white, very clean and well laundered. In fact the whole property was spotless in this respect. However there were a few niggles (please don’t take offence as they didn’t put us off, but need to be pointed out) which would have made this property outstanding: - a number of the double glazing units were “blown” meaning you couldn’t see out - 2 in the main kitchen window and one in bedroom 2 - the smaller of the 2 bedrooms - these should have been reported and sorted - all the windows indoors and out needed a jolly good clean, they were filthy and there was mould around the edges inside - the upvc inside and outside was filthy, it hadn’t been washed for a long time and was very old, resulting in very draughty windows and doors. Our 1st sight of the property was a “blown” double glazing unit and marked and scuffed door where you entered the property - not a good look - the 2nd bedroom in particular was very cold (it was down to 5c outdoors at night), although issues with the radiators were quickly resolved by the owner, we simply could not get the room warm. My father feels the cold and felt it in particular. The heating was still on a summer setting so didn’t come on automatically, we had to over-ride it all the time - the oven wasn’t particularly clean and the “fan” part of the oven simply didn’t warm up, although the oven worked on the setting without the fan thankfully - the carpet in the dining area of the kitchen needed a jolly good clean, it was also where you entered the property, so it may have been better for the whole area to be tiled. Please don’t take this as criticism, they were just niggles that other guests may not notice. I suspect the owner, whom I spoke to on the phone about an issue and was very helpful, may not be aware of the niggles. It just took away the edge of what could have received a 5* review from us both.

  • "We loved this beautiful home from home and wish we could’ve stayed longer."

The rooms are spacious, the beds are comfy and the little touches like the tea and coffee tin and the toiletries in the bathroom were very well received. The home itself is perfectly positioned in it’s own private area but half way between Ambleside town centre and Windermere lakeside so both are just a 5 minute walk away. We will definitely be returning to this lovely home!

  • "Lovely property in a great location, feels like being in the countryside yet only a few minutes walk into Ambleside or the lake shore."

Property was clean and comfortable, microwave had not been cleaned, water in it? One of the toilets had a slow flow of water continually, needs to be fixed to save water. Overall we had a great week away and have booked again for next year, so shows we really liked our week at Wansfell.

  • "The property is fabulous and in such a beautiful setting, its quiet and peaceful yet close to waterhead and the town when you want to wander there."

The rooms are spacious and very comfy and there is everything there you could imagine in case of need, walking stick, umbrella, sewing kit, bulbs lots of dvds and cds and games etc too. Parking for 2 large cars easily right outside. Garden is delightful and warm when sunny which it was over Easter. The only negative point is that the property is a bit tired and needs just a little tlc and updating, sofas are a bit saggy and soft and low now some decor worn and a few cobwebs in the bathrooms. Nothing that spoilt the week though. Beds amazing though. Also the XBox is a bit pointless as it cant connect to the more modern TV, needs an extra lead so was unuseable. All in all I would go back but would not pay over £900 for it in my opinion based on pre pandemic prices that is about right. I ignor all the inflated ones and wait for prices to drop or find another cottage at a good price.

  • "This is a lovely property where we have stayed previously but it now needs a thorough clean particularly in these COVID days."

We were disappointed that the fridge door shelf was held together with cello tape making it difficult to use, no bath mat which meant getting out of the shower onto a slippery floor, no umbrella for the garden table in a lovely sun drenched garden which rendered it unusable in the intense heat of last week. In a property as lovely as this, attention to detail is important and we feel that standards have slipped. I have photographs of the state of cleanliness and the fridge door if you wish to see them. This feedback is given in the hope that action will be taken to remedy our complaints.

Located up a private drive in a peaceful position, you enter through the private entrance into a large dining area with an oak dining table and four chairs, perfect for those formal mealtime moments with one another.

Adjacent is the fitted kitchen, equipped with all the essentials including an electric oven and gas hob, fridge and freezer, dishwasher and an assortment of utensils and crockery needed for a short break.

Head into the spacious sitting room to put your feet up, with two plush sofas and a TV with Xbox for entertainment, plus the wall-mounted electric fire will come in handy during those colder months.

The main bedroom has a luxurious feel with a king-size oak bed and walk-in wardrobe with a wall mounted 19 inch LCD TV, complemented by the fully tiled en-suite bathroom which includes a large cubical shower.

In the second bedroom there is a zip/link bed which can be either a super king-size or a twin which also offers a contemporary en-suite bathroom with bath and shower over, so you can decide best how to prepare for the day.

Grab your refreshing beverage of choice and take a seat in the patio garden, including a table and four chairs for outside dining and two benches for relaxing and watching the sun go down after a tough day on the fells.

There are plenty of walks from the door including Todd Craig and the Fairfield Horseshoe, along with cruises on the lake, visits to the cinema and mini golf.

Take a night off cooking and book a table at one of the fine restaurants or pubs in Ambleside, including a modern British Michelin starred restaurant, The Old Stamp House, which is houses in the former office of William Wordsworth.

At any time of year, a cruise from Waterhead up Lake Windermere on the Windermere Steamer is a beautiful way to appreciate the magnificent landscape.

Stop off at Bowness-on-Windermere or continue down to Lakeside and visit the Lakes Aquaruim.

About the location

AMBLESIDE

Grasmere 4.4 miles; Windermere 4.7 miles; Keswick 16.7 miles.

Lying at the northern tip of Lake Windermere, England’s largest lake, Ambleside makes a superb base for touring the central Lakes, with Grasmere and the Langdale Valley just a short drive away. There is plenty to do here - cruises, boat trips and watersports on Lake Windermere itself and numerous shops, restaurants and pubs in the village to suit all tastes. On the lakeside at Waterhead, the parkland offers lovely views down the lake and a short stretch of beach, whilst a walk in the other direction, following Stock Ghyll through woodland, will bring you to the entrancing waterfall of Stock Ghyll Force. Along with the Lake and the great walking on offer, Ambleside is also famous for its annual rushbearing ceremony and the diminutive 17th century “Bridge House” - one of the most photographed buildings in the Lake District and now the National Trust Information Centre.
