  • "Fairy Glen is in a great location and has loads of space."

It was helpful having so many bathrooms too. However, many of the reviews before are correct that the property is in need of some TLC (especially when reflecting on price and similar properties). This didn’t impact our stay aside from the heating which is unworkable once on and the lounge becomes like an oven! The gaps in floorboards is odd especially in one of the en-suites where you inevitably drip water on the floor and therefore through the gaps. I get it that the property is old but some flooring would make more sense as noise anywhere in the house reverberates around. As the property is dog friendly, allowing guests to take the back door key out may make more sense as this means a dirty/wet dog can more easily come in this door and stay there until dry.

  • "Fairy Glen would have been an ideal place to stay in Grasmere, had it not been for: i) The central heating was on at a very high level 25C and non of the thermostats or radiator controls worked."

ii) The window pane in the lounge was cracked and therefore we could not open this to try and cool the room. iii) We had to spend an extortionate amount of time during the week trying to resolve these issues. We were so lucky that the local maintenance team who came to replace the outside garden seat tried their best to also resolve this problem, albeit this took a further couple of days. I am surprised that we were confronted with these issues during our holiday week and really resulted in a less than satisfactory experience. This premium rated property should be maintained at an appropriate level reflecting the rate charged. Unfortunately this experience will probably result in us not choosing Sykes Holiday Cottages for a subsequent holiday. Regretfully yours sincerely Colin and Mair Decker

Thank you for your comments. We are sorry to hear of the issues that you experienced, and whilst our Maintenance Team did attend to resolve the issues, they were unable to fix them on the day. We will take a look at the issues mentioned to ensure that they are resolved. Thank you- The Heart of the Lakes Owner Relations Team Property Owner

  • "A very comfortable and well maintained holiday cottage with a well stocked kitchen."

Sykes have really made a good job of addressing maintenance issues raised in previous reviews. The layout of the house works well for a group of friends and the location is fabulous for some challenging walks. The village is virtually on the doorstep and some lovely local walks including around Grasmere and Rydal Lakes are easily accessible. We stayed at Fairy Glen for a week to celebrate my birthday with friends and the bespoke caterers Cumbrian Chef (who we also highly recommend www.thecumbrianchef.co.uk) catered for 2 evening meals. They also commented that the kitchen was very well stocked.

  • "We've hired the house 4 times since 2019 and we feel that parts of it are starting to feel a little bit tired now."

Some of the taps are loose and the sink in the top floor bathroom is coming away from the wall. The shower doors all apparently leak but instead of being fixed, there is just a note to inform guests that the doors leak. A little bit of maintenance would make the place feel a bit fresher. Otherwise, we love the property and would like to return in future.

Thank you for your comments. We are pleased to hear that you enjoyed your fourth visit. We take all comments on board, and will be looking into the shower doors. Thank you. Property Owner

  • "We do like Fairy Glen and stayed several times as in good location, has 5 bedrooms, parking for 3 cars and allows dogs and the family love staying here."

A coffee maker would be ideal in the kitchen, and a little TLC may be needed to keep property updated. We were there when weather was windy and this caused drafts from bedroom windows on first floor. It a shame there only 1 bath which is in the top bedroom, which has limited headroom, it would be ideal if bathroom on first landing could have a bath in that bathroom so a bath is more accessible. We used the travel cot and the mattress was not ideal, we had to use a quilt to make it more comfortable to use. There was always a nail that came up on the floorboards in the dining room which is not ideal so avoid that as you enter the dining room ! We do love Fairy Glen and would stay here again.

The location is amazing with fabulous walks right from the door, great access to the lovely village, park and football field and the excellent bus service right on the doorstep. We visit the Lakes frequently and this is by far our favourite house and location. Thank you for a wonderful stay.

  • "Fairy Glenn needs some major TLC."

Many of the electrics didn’t work ( or needed new bulbs) the shower drains need cleaning as filled up and nearly overflowed every use. The bath was difficult to get in and out of and top floor bedroom beams were dangerous. The kitchen was poorly stocked and floor boards meant returning with holes in our socks as they need maintaining. Heating very noisy during the night and none of the remote controls had working batteries. Kitchen needs an extractor fan as fire alarm triggered frequently and exterior bin needs collecting at start of stay as we had to store rubbish bags in the house until collected on Thursday as bin full at start of our week. No mention in advertising of busy main road to Grasmere right next to the property as this was noisy, double decker busses waiting outside made you feel on view.

  • "The house was pretty much perfect for the 10 guests (aged 29-89)."

It was quite clean despite some previous comments. A ground floor toilet would be very useful and there seems to be a potential location. A warning about the gaps in the bedroom & bathroom floor boards (up to 1 cm) would be very useful as if small items are dropped they cannot be retrieved. The enclosed garden was perfect for the dog. The views from most rooms were stunning.

  • "Fairy Glen is an impressive property in an excellent location being close to Grasmere Village and near a great play park for children."

The property was well equipped, has good appliances, especially the cooker and had really useful utility rooms. Most bedrooms were a decent size and the number of bathrooms was great for our large party. It does need some TLC, specifically, broken pan lids need replacement, windows need cleaning outside, a thorough clean inside would help and I'm glad we found the broken wine glass stem under a chair in the lounge rather than our children. The garden is pleasant and were it not for dog mess left by earlier ignorant guests, would be a good play area for children. We paid a premium price for an Easter week but the property was simply not value for money. With a spot of investment and attention to detail this has the potential to be a fantastic property. At the moment it is some way off, which is surprising for HoTL.

Thank you for your feedback. We are very sorry to see our standards of cleanliness were not as high as we all expect and we have reported this to our housekeeping team. All feedback is taken seriously and any necessary changes will be made so we appreciate you bringing this to our attention. Thank you for your feedback. The check in and out times were extended during COVID due to us having a shortage of cleaners and deeper cleans needing to take place. We are sorry this disappointed you however the safety of all our employees, guests and owners is paramount and this was an action we needed to make. • "We have previously stayed at Fairy Glen in 2019."

This year we were very disappointed at the standard of cleaning, especially as there is a later arrival time and earliier departure time. There were multiple cobwebs ( these had been commented on by previous guests in the visitors book) through out the house. The dining table has a groove around the top in which there were a lot of food particles. This was easily cleaned by running the hoover nozzle along the top of the groove. The beds on the middle floor were squeaky and some of the mattresses uncomfortable and in need of replacing. The left hand oven in the cooker in the kitchen would not reach and maintain temperture as the inner glass was missing, making it unusable. We reported this to Heart of the Lakes along with several other maintenance issues. We had a visit from the maintenance team who were going to arrange for the glass to be replaced. We hope that all of the above issues issues will be retified , we had already booked to stay at Fairy Glen in October 2022 before our current visit.

We were very dissapointed with the cleanliness of the place . The inside of the windows were covered in big cobwebs . Obviously not been cleaned for wouldn’t know how long. The skirting boards were not clean. A lot of of the pans we had to clean before using them. , We noticed in the comments book other people had remarked on the same comments about the lack of cleanliness . I Do not like complaining but in this instance I feel it should not have been as bad for the amount of money we paid .

We would like to thank you for your feedback. We apologise that the cleaning was not up to our usual standard and we have spoken with the housekeeping manager so that this does not occur again, We appreciate you bringing these points to our attention and we hope to welcome you back to Fairy Glen in the future. About the location

Grasmere 4.4 miles; Windermere 4.7 miles; Keswick 16.7 miles.

Lying at the northern tip of Lake Windermere, England’s largest lake, Ambleside makes a superb base for touring the central Lakes, with Grasmere and the Langdale Valley just a short drive away. There is plenty to do here - cruises, boat trips and watersports on Lake Windermere itself and numerous shops, restaurants and pubs in the village to suit all tastes. On the lakeside at Waterhead, the parkland offers lovely views down the lake and a short stretch of beach, whilst a walk in the other direction, following Stock Ghyll through woodland, will bring you to the entrancing waterfall of Stock Ghyll Force. Along with the Lake and the great walking on offer, Ambleside is also famous for its annual rushbearing ceremony and the diminutive 17th century “Bridge House” - one of the most photographed buildings in the Lake District and now the National Trust Information Centre.
