  • "We enjoyed our stay in Bakers Cottage Yard but were disappointed about the parking."

The property had a parking space but we were unable to get our Ford Focus safely in and out every day. So we had to pay for car parks or walk quite a distance to free spaces. Needs a parking permit. Fine for a very small car.

  • "We have stayed before at Bakers Yard and therefore knew about the lack of parking."

However there used to be a parking permit for the car park, which was helpful. Great quiet location in centre of Grasmere. The bathroom needs some attention and we could not stop the shower leaking onto the floor whatever we tried. The doors need easing as very tight on the new carpet, and shame to spoil the new carpet. Cottage was clean on arrival.

Thank you for your feedback. We are pleased that you found the property to be clean. We take all comments on board. We have asked our Property Services Team to look at the shower, and the doors. Thank you- The Lakelovers Owner Relations Team Property Owner

  • "This was our third visit to Baker’s Yard."

I love the house and the area. Only thing I would say is a negative is the bathroom needs updating and shower needs fixing or replacing. But I love the place and will prob be back again!

  • "Extremely disappointed with the accomodation at Bakers Yard."

We knew it was dated from previous reviews but the foisty, damp smell and dirtiness throughout was terrible. The bedrooms were adequate and the bed comfy however the bedding did not smell freshly laundered and the pillows were flat and uncomfortable . The bedding was so old it was thinning and felt cheap. The lampshade was covered in cobwebs at the side of our bed in the back room. Leading onto the bathroom…it was disgustingly dirty and mouldy. The shower screen had black mould alongside the seal and the bath seal was also black as was the grout. The tiles were cracked and broken and sharp edges were exposed alongside the bath. The wall light in the bathroom didn’t work and the top of it was covered in thick dust. We had the quickest of showers each morning and had to wear our flip flops for fear of cutting our feet on the tiles/flooring. Upstairs in the living area, the cushions were stained and filthy. There were dead flies in the flyswat left on a windowsill and the cupboard fronts felt sticky with grease. Again, numerous light fittings did not work and the skirting boards were thick of dust. One morning we were awoken early by the sound of builders setting up scaffolding on next doors cottage - we were unable to get our car onto the driveway due to their Lorries blocking the access and as such ended up paying for our car to be in the public carpark overnight for two nights. Any chance of us being able to sit in the yard with our books and coffee were quickly scuppered due to the noise. No welcome hamper upon arrival; we had travelled some distance to get there and then, due to check in being at 4pm (for cleaning?? I think not!) we had been out walking. Every other holiday cottage we have ever stayed in have had welcome hampers with enough to get you through til next morning…tea, coffee, wine and dog treats! There was nothing. I have tried several times throughout our stay to alert you to our complaint and have found your response lacking and uncaring. It is our first experience of using Sykes and I’m sorry to say, we would be most reluctant to book with you again. If this is the calibre of accommodation on offer with Sykes, we will not be back. I have taken numerous photographs if you would like them although you’ll be able to see them on our Trip Advisor review. I look forward to your response.

  • "The parking spot is only accessible for a Fiat 500 or equivalent so we had to find alternative parking for our medium size Ford for the week at extra expense."

Frankly, the standard of the let was appalling. Unlike every other holiday let we have been to there was no welcome folder, to explain what’s what with appliances, tv, cooker, shower etc. just random scraps on a pin board. The bathroom was really shabby with broken tiles and leaking shower screen (see review Oct 23). The kitchen area is clearly a throw back to the 60’s, the milk shelf fell out when we opened the fridge door and the utensils were an assorted muddle. This let is clearly a prime example of property is which the owner has shown no interest at all for many years and is best avoided if you want value for money. Remember, Sykes can only put right what the owner is prepared to pay for.

Thank you for your feedback, it is a little unfair to those who are looking forward to staying at Bakers Yard to describe it as appalling. The accommodation changed ownership in 2023 and since then has had more than £10,000 spent redecorating the whole property with new carpets laid throughout, new bedroom furniture, the heating system replaced and essential remedial work. This was carried out as part of a rolling refurbishment programme which continues throughout 2024. Bakers Yard enjoys a loyal set of visitors who return year-after-year and while the whole property will soon be upgraded I feel sure they would not recognise your description of their much loved holiday home. • "We really enjoyed our stay, however had to find alternative parking as our medium sized car could not fit down the drive."

Partly because tbe bollards opposite do not allow you to get the right angle to turn in. Partly cause it is just too narrow to use. We tried on two occasions and took all of us getting out first, incase we didnt have the room to open the doors ( we have two kids to get out the back, one in an infant seat). Then myself directing my partner back in with only a couple of centimeters to work with. We wish it had been made MUCH clearer the exact width of the driveway so that we could have taken this into consideration when booking. Bathroom needs a bit of an update and the leaky shower door fixing. Our stay was great otherwise. Lovely location!

Thank you for your feedback. We always advise customers to check individual requirements prior to booking in order to mitigate any potential issues. We will inform our maintenance team about the leaking door. We are glad that you did enjoy your holiday and all the area has to offer. Lakelovers Owner Relations Property Owner

I couldn't fault the accommodation although the parking space is a little tight if you have a big car. There are plenty of quirky little shops and cafes and a co-op for groceries less than a 5 minutes walk away. Super place!

GRASMERE

Ambleside 5 miles; Windermere 9 miles; Keswick 13 miles.

Situated in the heart of the Lake District National Park is the lovely village of Grasmere, probably best known as the home of William Wordsworth, a place he once described as "The most loveliest spot that man hath found". Any visit to Grasmere needs to include The Grasmere Gingerbread shop, where the Wilson family has been making gingerbread for over 60 years. Also in the village are a number of shops, pubs, a church which dates back to the 13th century, and Grasmere Lake. Grasmere Sports takes place every August, where you can watch participants compete in a variety of sports, including Cumberland wrestling. Just five miles away is the town of Ambleside and Lake Winderemere where you will find shops, pubs, restaurants and the 17th century Bridge House, which is one of the most photographed buildings in the Lake District. Cruises, boat trips and watersports can all be enjoyed on Lake Windermere, and the towns of Windermere and Keswick are also within driving distance. Grasmere is a wonderful base for your Lake District retreat.
