  • "What a wonderful property, we have had the most amazing and peaceful time at Villa Marina."

The garden and outside space is fantastic, with a choice of dining areas and hot tub with a view! Early mornings were spectacular with a sunrise we could never tire of from the gorgeous airy bedroom with comfortable bed and linens. Had chance to meet the lovely owners on our last day. We will most definitely try to be back sometime! Thank you!

Thankyou so much for your lovely feedback and it was lovely to meet you both. Hope you got to see the Lifeboat Station. We would most certainly welcome you back to Villa Marina again. Best Regards Carol and Philip Property Owner

  • "Fantastic house in beautiful surroundings, the views in the morning on bright clear days were stunning, at night time we could see accros the bay to blackpool tower."

The house was warm and very well equiped including washing powder etc. Instructions for all equipment was provided. A great base for the lakes and seaside days out, local beaches such as bardsea were well worth a visit. Since our group were late fifties to late eighties the small twin room was not really suitable but it would be no problem for younger groups. All in all highly recommended.

  • "We took the whole family for a week, staying at the Villa Marina and found it a fantastic large home in a great location."

It was clean and very well presented with plenty of space for all ten family members. Indeed we rarely used the second living space upstairs as we had enough space for everyone downstairs. The open plan kitchen area and wrap around conservatory space with comfy seating was as good as it looks in the photos and the main place for us when we were at home. The gardens were beautiful and the numerous outdoor seating options utilised to look at the views of morecambe bay. Would most definately recommend

  • "The property is beautiful, spacious, with an amazing outlook, so in that respect it is a lovely place for a holiday."

We watched some amazing tall ships come in, and our smallest had a fab time running round the garden. Unfortunately our time there was marred by the general uncleanliness of the place. Given they were still cleaning it when we arrived at 5pm (and check out is 10am), you would assume it would be thoroughly cleaned, alas that was not the case. Dirty floors, a massive collection of detritus and previous occupants things around/under beds and sofas etc, this included 3 different medication tablets which was particularly concerning as we had small children with us. The hot tub wasn’t clean, tide marks round the bath. The AGA is also not on in summer months, so you have a tiny combi-oven to try and feed 10 people, which doesn’t work. When I contacted about this, I was told we could put the AGA on but it would take 12 hours to heat up and make the house warm if left on. It would have been useful to know this in advance so less “oven” meals could have been planned and bought. Sykes asked for feedback after the first night to which I reported the above concerns and I was phoned quickly and asked to send photos through the app which I duly did. They said they would contact the owner about this, especially the tablets as they deemed this “disappointing” but I didn’t hear anything further. Sykes did suggest a cleaning team come in but I explained as we had an elderly disabled person with us, that it made it difficult to “go out for the day” as they wanted us to, and they didn’t feel comfortable with people cleaning around them. I was asked “well what do you want then? You can’t pursue compensation if you don’t let a cleaning team in” - which was frankly an irritating and disappointing comment. I’d been asked to give feedback, that was how it started, and ultimately it should have been immaculate on arrival, not need a cleaning team to ‘make right’ the issues, especially when it would make someone on holiday feel uncomfortable. This attitude is frankly not respectful of an elderly disabled person’s feelings. Ultimately, none of the photographs, or any of my future messages or emails have been responded to by Sykes (of which I have sent several). I don’t know if Sykes actually passed on the photos to the owner like they said, or if the owner also was not concerned by the feedback. Sykes apparently are not interested and will not be a company I will recommend in future, much like Villa Marina.

Thank you for your feedback. We are sorry that you had issues but all these could have been resolved during your stay if you had accepted the offer from Sykes or the management team and it would not have marred your enjoyment of the property. However there was one area under a bed that had been missed by the cleaners, this is a double bed with a heavy oak frame, it takes 2 adults to move it in addition an oak cabinet needs to be moved so a child would find it impossible to move it. The cleaners do their best to leave before guests arrive but it does depend on how it is left. The hot tub is drained, cleaned and filled with fresh drinking water then tested before the next guest arrives. The AGA is generally not on in the summer as the house has a lot of glass which takes in the heat and can make the kitchen feel like a sauna. If guests want the AGA lit they can request it as the last guest did. You can also light it yourself, instructions are behind the door of the AGA and in the book (similar to a gas fire ). As it is gas it will reach cooking temp after 4 hrs and would be fine for the rest of the week. The combi oven is not tiny, it is a standard size under the counter oven, grill and microwave. There is an additional oven/microwave on top of the counter, and also a four ring induction hob. There is also a charcoal barbecue which is fine to use all the time and we have previously never had any complaints. Sykes did act appropriately in trying to resolve the issues raised and their actions cannot be considered disrespectful. Sykes did pass the photos onto us and we are concerned when we receive comments such as yours. We attended the day that the you left, to check everything and to talk through the issues with the manager and cleaners and have implemented a revised cleaning scheme with them so that these issues do not happen again. We have checked regularly with guests since then and they have all been very happy with their stay. Regards Carol Owner Villa Marina Property Owner

Bits that would help going forwards, more dishwasher tablets please, also no rinse and or salt which it needed badly. Need something outside to dry washing on,grass badly needed cutting, nasty big nettles.Jacuzzi bath drains very slowly, needs drain unblocker put down plughole. Found 2x cups chipped ,1x glass cracked and 1x plate chipped, all hidden at the back of the cupboards. Aga oven shelves were dirty. Hot tub was dirty, cleaned when there but too quickly got dirty again.Having said this would definitely book again..would have appreciated being able to access fishing gear etc as was advertised when we booked this in January but nothing was accessible during our stay July/August.

Hello Pamela Having spoken to you in person, as previously discussed with you, the issues you raised have now been resolved. We have changed from using tablets to using powder, this is placed inside the dispenser in both the prewash and main wash sections which are dispensed at the correct time making this more effective, instead of the tablet inside the machine being used up in the prewash. We do state that if guests bring their own sailing dinghy’s, kayaks or winsurfing equipment these can be launched from the slipway next to the property. Thankyou for your feedback, we are constantly trying to improve things and hope that you will visit again in the future. Regards Carol Owner Property Owner

  • "These things have been mentioned in previous reviews but the issues have not been resolved."

It is a beautiful property and is in an amazing location and it is such a shame that the cleanliness lets it down. The house requires a good deep clean. Greasy things covered in dust on kitchen work tops. Things which have not been cleaned properly in cupboards and drawers. Cobwebs internally and externally at the entrance area. I am not a big fan of all the instructions all over the house either. I believe that liquid soap should be available in the kitchen and downstairs bathroom. I know in summer we should be able to rely on the sun to warm the property but with the aga not switched on and the central heating locked at 21.0c we were really cold on the first 2 nights of our stay so we reached for the wood to start a fire in the lounge but no started pack was left for us. So we had to make a trip to Barrow for fire wood and blankets, not ideal. Also in the kitchen lots of the mugs and plates have chips or glazing cracks. I have stayed in lots of rental properties and this one just felt a bit below par. I think every other one has provided at least a bottle of milk on arrival some have provided much more cakes wine chocolate and toiletries in the bathrooms. So in conclusion we enjoyed our stay but with these things attend to it would have been a truly remarkable experience.

Hello Andrea I am sorry that the property did not meet your expectations. The issues you have mentioned have been brought to the attention of our Housekeeping and Maintenance team and are now being resolved. The AGA is off during the summer months because there is a lot of glass and the house faces South the kitchen can sometimes feel like a sauna. This is the reason there are alternatives cooking facilities. There is firewood available on site in the shed, it was an oversight by the Housekeeper not to leave you some, but if you had contacted the team they would have given you the codes to access the shed to get the wood. The heating is set at an ambient 21C but you can increase up to 23 C on the wall controls, which is very warm. Thankyou for your feedback, we are constantly trying to improve things and hope that you will consider visiting again in the future. Regards Carol Owner Property Owner

The views are unreal, from the garden & from the house itself, direct on Morecambe Bay, & a really beautiful garden full of flowers. From part of the first floor is open plan/sunroom, with water views all around. Nice snug living room at the back of the house. Plenty of places to sit both inside & outside: benches, sofas, table, a little hidden deck right on the water In case you're confused by the photos (we were) the back of Villa Marina is attached to the Victorian brick house, but they are very separate, with a fence, and both house & garden are private. Nice hot tub, too. We took the ferry to Piel and drove into lovely Ulverston. We'd rented a place from someone else that turned out not to be as advertised & Sykes helped us arrange this at the last minute. We couldn't believe our luck.

Additional examples for improvement: *Missing parts of instructions for induction hob *Broken shower door back upstairs room *Leaking front door in heavy rain *Lots of dirt and dust (e.g layer of dust in wardrobe upstairs and cobwebs by deckchairs in conservatory and cobwebs above bed in small room with dusty wardrobe. *Lots of cobwebs everywhere… *Drain flys in bathroom with broken shower door *Hot tub dirty lots of bits floating in there. *Dirty glasses and cups when we arrived and a few chipped *A few bulbs out *No soap in the house when we arrived *No fire lighters, no gas in the lighter to light the fire. Again, overall, we had an excellent time, but end up spending more on Takeaways and meals out that we would have preferred. Thank you for your time. Aaron

Hello Aaron Thank you very much for your feedback and we are pleased you enjoyed your stay as it is a wonderful location. We have had a few issues with the Aga as we had been awaiting parts. We apologise for this, but the Aga is now back fully working! This should, however not have affected your ability to cook meals as the kitchen is fitted with a separate full size induction hob and a separate electric oven, in addition to a microwave oven, as in the summer the Aga is generally turned off at the request of our guests, as the room can become too warm. We take on board your comments and we are pleased you took time out to provide us with feedback and we will pass on your comments to our cleaning team. The hot tub has a full drain down each change over and is filled with fresh potable water followed by fresh chemicals and new filters, any bits in the hot tub may have arisen from windy conditions whilst in use, however the filters usually collect these items during its cleaning cycle. Please do note that this is a large property and we must turn around the property the same day for new guests , on occasions the property needs more work (unfortunately not all guests leave the property in the condition they found it!) and as a result some areas can be missed. We take all comments seriously as we are proud of Villa Marina as it is a unique place and we try to ensure that guests have a wonderful stay, we do encourage guests to contact our maintenance and housekeeping team if they have any issues during their stay so that they can be dealt with as soon as possible. The location was ideal, right next to the sea. We had everything we needed, the hot tub was great, although a couple of jets seemed faulty, but it didn’t hinder our enjoyment. The house was clean, spacious, and easy to find. We had a great meal at the Clarkes hotel down the road, and the nearest shop was about a 5 minute drive away. The house is right next to Piel Ferry and we were lucky enough to take a trip to Piel island, which was a great and cheap day out. We had a bit of a nightmare on the day of leaving as my car decided to break down. Whilst waiting for the RAC, the caretakers arrived. They were really kind and understanding. The gentleman insisted on helping me jump start the car, which thankfully worked! They were really nice people and I can’t thank them enough for going above and beyond to help us out of the pickle we were in. Would definitely recommend and visit again.

The views are unreal and the house is just gorgeous. The only downside of our stay was that we arrived at 16:47 (check in is at 5pm) and were greeted by the rudest cleaning staff. We pulled up to the property and seen a few young people entering so we asked one if them “is this the right place because we’ve just seen some others walk in”. They replied “erm yes and those young people are making YOUR beds…and check-in is at 5pm you know???”. We waited outside overlooking the view until 17:30 because they hadn’t finished but as they were leaving offered us a late check-out on the last day. Also, AGA cooking facility kept going off so never got a chance to cook in it. Hot tub also required maintenance during our stay because it wasn’t hot enough. Other than any of that, i wasn’t put off and would 100% love to stay again (after the cleaning staff had cheered up a little because it doesn’t set the right tone when you’re only just arriving at your destination.

Both lounges were extremely comfortable with the added benefit of an open fire in the downstairs one. The kitchen area was also spacious with a large dining table ( perhaps the chairs could be a little bit bigger as you are quite low down when eating ) and had an Aga , electric hob and oven and microwave, every utensil you could possibly need was provided . There is a seating area incorporated into the kitchen area where you can sit and take in the views through the panoramic windows , there is also a sunroom where you can again just chill and take in the views. The massive garden which contains a fantastic hot tub led directly to the sea but be aware that if you have little ones keep an eye on them as there is no fence between the garden and the sea. I would love to tell the owners that their kitchen table chairs are just too low for the table, making eating feel very strange! This has been mentioned by others in the guest book as well. It is really annoying! The standard of cleanliness was poor, significant amounts of dust, dead insects next to sofas and chairs for example. No problem with the very early checkout time of 0900, but requiring the dishwasher to be empty rather than on seems mean! The lack of recycling at the property is also strange, unless the waste company recycle it later? This should be made clear in the paperwork, which also had the wrong day for the bin, meaning we almost missed it! Overall though a great house, as described, peaceful and pretty location and a great place to relax.

The bedroom with the balcony opening out to the sea is spectacular; all of the other rooms are spacious and well appointed. There are three large living areas for folk to do their own activities if they want and a huge kitchen to come together for meals. Our week was absolutely roasting hot and we spent most of each day playing with the children in the garden, and watching all the activities going on in the bay. When the sandy mud flats are exposed twice a day, the sight of an occasional person digging for cockles or sailor fixing the exposed hull of his boat is such a contrast to the kayaks, windsurfers, regattas, fishing boats and dredgers that fill the views when the tide is in. We had an on-line grocery delivery to the house and topped up with treats from the The Bosun's Locker cafe a stone's throw away. It is a great house and we were all very grateful for the opportunity to get together and relax in comfort.

The house had plenty sitting areas and furniture was good, plenty space for a party of 9. All beds were very comfortable and the bed Linen was good quality. The King bedroom only had a wardrobe, which was dusty and there was no where to sit items or unpack. There was also a travel cot up in the bedroom. It is great cots are available but if not required they should be removed from the room. 2 out of 3 of the double rooms only had one bedside table and reading lamp, this seemed odd and not convenient if both reading. The kitchen and dining area was large and we had chosen this particularly as we enjoy cooking and having meals together. The Aga was fantastic and a pleasure to cook on. Unfortunately there were not enough pots, oven trays or baking bowls, which made cooking for a group harder than it needed to be. There were two rather old tea towels available. We bought more tea towels and a Pyrex serving dish to make things easier. There was also a high chair set up and again I feel if this is not requested it could be removed. In the bathrooms there are A4 signs on the walls, in bold type with some words in red. We have stayed in holiday cottages in Britain at least once a year for the last ten years and I have not experienced this before. These signs basically say if you block the toilet or cause damp on the floor due to the positioning of the shower curtain, you will incur a charge. These signs give the feeling of a hostel rather than a luxury villa. A shower screen could be fitted instead of a short shower curtain and I would think it would be difficult to prove who had blocked the toilet! At the cost of this Villa I did not appreciate signs stating there would be extra charges. It was lovely to have a hot tub but this became cloudy and began to smell. Someone came to service this but within a day it was the same and we decided to stop using it. We did enjoy our holiday and relaxed enjoying the views however I feel attention to detail would make the stay more welcoming and pleasant.
