  • "We loved Syke Cottage in Hawkshead and the area."

The cottage was comfortable and clean with everything you need when you are away from home. There was plenty of hot water, comfortable beds with nice bedding and a well equipped kitchen. We have stayed in many rental holiday homes in the Lake District and this was one of the best! Thank you.

  • "We had a fantastic stay at this cottage."

Beautifully furnished and decorated, a real home from home. Everything we needed was there and more. Comfortable, homely, warm and with all the mod cons! All items were great quality ... Laura Ashley, The White Company, Next etc etc. The log burner was a great feature and used each day! We felt trusted, as the owner had left lots of quality items for our use, which was such a refreshing change nowadays. Our only slight niggle was there was only one shower, which was downstairs. There were 5 of us staying, so to have had another shower usable in the upstairs bathroom would have been ideal. But like I say, only a very minor thing! All in all, we wished we lived there, didn't want to leave and would definately return and recommend! Thank you for a lovely stay.

  • "We loved our stay at Sykes Cottage."

It had a great ambiance and just wanted to be loved and appreciated and to make everyone happy. Some houses just do that. The owners provided everything and had not hidden away their nice bits and pieces so it made us feel trustedand we took the greatest care we could. The soft furnishing was all Laura Ashley (gorgeous) and there was an Aga. Oh happy days! I loved it. I used to have one and now realise how much I miss it. We were so happy, we could have stayed another week.

  • "Our stay in Syke Cottage was the nicest stay we’ve ever had in the Lake District after holidaying here for the past 10 years."

The whole family was so comfortable and happy during our stay, we have already booked for next year. Car parking for 2 cars was perfectly situated next to the property, especially when unpacking and packing the car in the Lake District weather. Everything we could have possibly needed was there and more. Even things like cleaning products were supplied for us to use. The private garden to the rear was neat and tidy. A lovely area to eat on a warm summers evening. If we had one minor criticism of the property, it would be in regards to the layout of the bedrooms. As we have 2 children, we would have preferred to have the 2 singles bedroom next to one of the double rooms so we could hear them. The compliment welcome gifts were a present surprise and greatly appreciated thank you. Already looking forward to next year.

It is a beautiful cottage that is welcoming, very well appointed and extremely comfortable. A couple of of minutes walk and you are in the centre of Hawkshead, with some lovely independent shops to visit and pubs to eat & drink at. You are also well placed to visit some beautiful towns in the The Lake District and also for access to some great hill walking. What’s not to love?!!

  • "We loved staying in your beautiful cottage and would return again with no hesitation."

Just a couple of minor points from us. It would have been helpful to have had a bit more information about the property in the folder for guests, e.g., we couldn’t find instructions for putting the heating on, or what to do with bed linen and towels at the end of our stay.

It was very comfortable and very clean. Our only comments would be that the double beds were small , and that the upstairs bathroom could do with a fixed shower. But we had a really very nice stay and enjoyed the cottage in every way Thankyou Ian

This 3 bedroom, 2 bathroom accommodation is exquisitely decorated, maintaining is olde world charm you holding every conceivable creature comfort you could need. This cottage oozes charm, warmth and a true family atmosphere. The welcome pack was an unexpected bonus, and a warming drop of sherry made our arrival complete. This has truly been one of our most memorable staycation experiences yet. Full marks to Jo the owner, who we met, just as we were leaving. Thank you so, so much and we are already looking forward to returning next year xxx

  • "Another wonderful stay at Syke Cottage, Hawkshead, however I have marked the likeliness to recommend at 6."

The justification for this is in previous years when dealing directly with Heart of the lakes, the interactions were a pleasure with direct human contact with a company representative and an immediate resolution or an undertaking to revert in quick time. Since joining the Syke Cottages group this direct contact has been completely lost with the need to use the online booking system, chat bots and the inability for direct interaction. I appreciate much interaction can be done online, however I consider this a retrograde step in not having an option for direct human interaction. I do not find the wholly automated process a pleasurable experience. Something shared and commented on by the Heart of the Lakes staff at the Ambleside office.

  • "This is a beautiful cottage with loads of character."

There are some lovely old pieces of furniture to add to the charm. It has plenty of room for 3 adults and 2 kids, didn't ever feel crowded. The kithen is recently refurbished and comes equipped with an excellent range of pots, pans, cutlery, cooking irons, baking trays etc. There is an aga. The sitting room is very comfortable and we used the woodburner most evenings for added toastiness. Parking is a little tight especially for large cars, but there are two spaces next to the cottage going off the sign on the wall.

Aga cooking is also great to try if you haven't already, but there's conventional hob if you don't fancy it. The only thing to look out for is the head room, three out of the four in our party had no problem at all, but anyone much over around 1.8m tall will need to duck quite frequently!

  • "We had a lovely stay at Syke cottage."

The cottage is stunning. We have only 3 things to mention. The bath towels are not bath sheets and therefore are not very big. The cottage would benefit from a King Size bed, most people these days have a king size. We found the double too small so slept in separate beds. And finally the 9am checkout is too early. We stay in a lot of cottages and even since covid all checkouts are either 10am or 11am. We would recommend the cottage as it is furnished to a high standard and is in a great location. Thank you for the welcome items of wine, chocolates and biscuits. Very much appreciated.

Very handy for walking into Hawkshead. The cottage is amply equipped and we really appreciated the treats awaiting our arrival! We had two criticisms which you may like to consider: 1. Boasting character throughout with some parts of the cottage dating back to the early 18th century, with Beatrix Potter's nurse once living next door too, this historic holiday cottage is the perfect choice for a family escape to Cumbria.

Enter into the large porch where you can find a good host of utility essentials including both a washing machine and tumble dryer, of great assistance for those longer stays, where you can also find an electric stove where you can warm up your toes after a day of rambling.

Move through into the impressive country kitchen, hosting character in its Belfast sink and stone-flag floor, where an AGA takes centre stage letting you prepare all your family-favourites with ease, as well as there being a separate gas oven and hob for flexibility when cooking.

Gather together in the dining room with quaint antiques dotted around, this homely room is the ultimate spot to spend time with your loved ones over a hearty meal as you plan a fun-filled itinerary.

End your evenings in the comfort of the inviting sitting room, where a woodburning stove sits within the rustic exposed-stone inglenook, the wooden beams lining the ceiling adding to the beautiful charm of the property, while the HD TV with Sky and DVD player is sure to provide hours of entertainment on a rainy day.

The ground floor also hosts a wonderful bathroom, so you can indulge in a relaxing soak to end each day perfectly, while you can find a further bathroom resting on the first floor with a shower over too, letting you choose how best to unwind before catching up on your rest.

The bedrooms are all elegantly decorated with tasteful decor and soft furnishings, with neutral hues bringing a calming aura from which to relax in as well as far-reaching views over the rolling fields and towards Claife Heights.

Spend your mornings out making the most of the beautiful countryside that surrounds the property, with your own private lawn where you can soak up the sun with a refreshing coffee to start the day.

Take the short, scenic walk into the centre of Hawkshead, where you will be greeted by a good selection of cafés, tea rooms and pubs where you can enjoy a hearty lunch in between adventures, before exploring the quaint streets housing gift shops, clothing stores art galleries and more, a trip to The Chocolate Factory being a must to pick up a tasty treat to bring back home.

Visit the Beatrix Potter Gallery where you can marvel at the original illustrations of the famous children's writer, while a trip to Near Sawrey will let you explore the National Trust wonder of Hill Top, Potter's rural farmhouse where she got much of her inspiration for her books.

The National Trust property of Wray Castle is also in easy reach in Low Wray, perfect for those travelling with little ones with its play trail, as well as its Gothic architecture and views over Lake Windermere being remarkably impressive.

Venture over to Lake Windermere itself to find a plethora of watersporting opportunities such as canoeing, kayaking, paddleboarding and much more, with plenty of pleasant waterside eateries here too where you can celebrate a special occasion, or simply explore the wider area of the Lake District National Park where you can tackle mountain peaks, roam amongst spectacular scenery and simply soak in the beauty of this desirable location.
