  • "Absolutely beautiful cottage, we had a lovely week's stay."

Only very small niggle was a lack of lighting in front of the cottage, but apart from that the facilities were amazing. We will definitely return!

Also a line for drying clothes etc.

  • "Excellent modern house with everything you need."

OS maps also provided. Whitehaven a short car journey, not 10 minutes if anything you need that cant be had from the local shop. ( the convenience store and post office are now the same shop, not 2 different shops) If you are a light sleeper noise from the beer garden from one of the locals, railway and sheep may disturb you. You may miss this bit if you print, bucket and mop would have been handy for the kitchen floor. Water drains slow from the bath might need looking at. One of the double glazing units in one of the single bedrooms is shot and needs replacing.

  • "Modern end terrace house."

Conveniently situated near St Bees railway station. 10 mins walk from shingle beach and coastal walk onto St Bees Head. An OK location for accessing the Cumbrian coast, Ennerdale and Wasdale. Post Office convenience store in the village. Supermarkets in Whitehaven and Egremont. Kitchen adequately equipped but oven door was thick with grease. There was substantial mould to the grouting, edging and around the taps in the main bathroom. Toothbrush mugs provided but needed cleaning. No toilet roll holders. Badly stained dining chairs, and, as mentioned in previous reviews, poorly upholstered, too uncomfortable to sit on – so used chairs from bedroom instead. Washing machine but no clothes line in rear yard. In our opinion the property was inadequately cleaned prior to our arrival. The soft furnishings absolutely reeked to the point that we didn’t want to sit on them. So overall an uncomfortable week.

  • "House extremely clean and tidy, and everything we needed was present."

Beds were very comfortable. Nice big TV for evenings in. Practical kitchen and dining area. Useful back yard and excellent parking for 2 cars out front. Nice touches, such as complete set of OS maps provided, plus some board games and books. Location is excellent. House very warm despite cool spring weather. All good for a happy week.

  • "The sofas in the cottage are somewhat less than comfortable and the dining room chairs are in need of repadding or some cushioning as they were very uncomfortable, unfortunately it was the last day before i realised that the two chairs in the bedroom had been done and we could have used them instead."

otherwise the cottage was warm and fairly well equipped only missing a grater in the kitchen.

It was very clean, kitchen was well equipped, dog friendly and a 5 to 10 minute walk to the beach. We definitely hope to return and would recommend St Bees and Rowan Cottage to our friends.

  • "The house has a washing machine and also a small lock-up container in the back yard which can fit two bikes."

These were both much appreciated but not included in the details. There is not a dishwasher and there’s very limited storage in the bedrooms - the two single rooms are very small with nowhere to put clothes. The house is half a mile from a lovely beach and there is a small ‘general store’ in the village. Asda do online deliveries from Whitehaven. We had a lovely two weeks in the area and loved St Bees although we did find the immediate area had very little to do (especially as we had teenagers with us). We did find activities but had to resign ourselves to an hour’s drive most days to get to them.

About the location

ST BEES

Whitehaven 5 miles.

St. Bees is an historic seaside village on the west coast of Cumbria with a Norman priory and Elizabethan public school, as well as a shop, post office and old traditional pubs. It's an ideal base for exploring the western Lake District and Cumbrian coast, and is the start of the famous Wainwright coast to coast walk. St. Bees Head is the only major sea cliff between Wales and Scotland and is the only Heritage coastline in Cumbria. There is a fine beach and many wonderful walks are available along the clifftops, which are also home to one of England’s most important seabird colonies. There is also a nine-hole golf course in the village. Nearby Whitehaven, an elegant Georgian port, and the spectacular western Lakes, are more than worthy of a visit. Muncaster Castle is 8 miles away, as is the Eskdale and Ravenglass miniature railway. Cockermouth, the birth place of Wordsworth, and Keswick on Derwentwater are also within easy driving distance.
