Cosy and comfortable and nice to come back to after a good walk! Great location.

Lovely and warm with a toasty fire, comfy beds and sofa, nice big kitchen. Will definitely book again with friends. Nice touch leaving the local coffee, drank it all!

  • "A lovely, warm cottage in an amazing location with door-step walks, a really handy local store and a welcoming pub."

While the cottage had great charm and had all the facilities you would expect, the whole interior was disappointingly dirty and needs a proper deep clean. Ceilings were full of cobwebs, many areas were overly dusty and both shower heads were mouldy. While the cottage cleanliness is an issue that needs addressing, our enjoyment of the cottage wasn't impacted too much and we'd be happy to return in future.

  • "We booked this cottage last minute, so had limited choice."

We absolutely loved it, and would be top of my list next time! Perfect location with walks from the door, and good pubs. We took 2 dogs, and 5 adults, there was lots of space. The beds were super comfy with Hypnos mattresses. Good level of equipment, we didn’t cook much but the kitchen was very well equipped had we needed to. I would recommend and we will be going back. Thank you for letting us stay in your gorgeous cottage.

  • "A comfortable and very well appointed cottage."

Slight damp issue in the utility area that could do with some maintenance. Wardrobe in the end bedroom doors don’t close properly. Other than these small issues we can’t fault the cottage. The cottage is in a great location and was warm and cosy. We really enjoyed our stay and would come again.

  • "A roomy comfortable cottage in a terrific location."

A few things that would make the stay better: If you expect visitors to keep the place clean, you need to provide cloths and washing up sponges. Provide some dishwasher tablets too. A welcome pack would be good. These small things matter.

We are glad you found the cottage comfortable. I totally agree that basic cleaning products are needed and have agreed this with our housekeeper for future bookings. We are also going to be supplying a welcome pack from later in October. Thank you for your suggestions. Property Owner

  • "Excellent cottage, in fact better than described - the listing doesn't mention a bath, but we were delighted to find that there was one."

Very comfortable, brilliant location, walks behind the cottage and in all directions. Thoroughly enjoyable base for a week's holiday. Minor suggestion: as 4 single blokes, we had been unable to find an inexpensive 4 bedroom cottage, so had booked White Lion Cottage knowing it had 3 bedrooms, so we knew full well that either two chaps would have to share the twin bedded room, or one of us would have to sleep on the sofa. The latter was what we did, and it worked out absolutely fine. But when the time comes to replace that sofa, perhaps considering a sofabed instead would add to the flexibility.

We are glad you found the cottage to your liking. The sofas are brand new so we wouldn't be replacing them any time soon. For information of future guests we have one double bedroom, one twin and the third room can be set up either way as long as Lakleovers are told in advance at the time of booking. This should avoid anyone having to use the sofa. We hope to see you again soon. Property Owner

A smaller table and chairs in the kitchen would make it easier to prepare and cook meals.

Thank you for your comment. We do agree the location is lovely and we can start a walk in any direction from the cottage. We will bear your comment in mind but do need to accommodate 6 guests when the cottage is full. Property Owner

  • "I would love to give this charming little cottage five stars (5*)."

It has plush new carpets, comfortable beds and new lounge furniture, a smart TV, ample room and a well equipped kitchen. Its also in a great location. Car parking was not a problem. We managed to park opposite the cottage everyday, and had parking not been available, there was usually a free on-street place within 100m. However, the decor in places is looking tired (particularly the kitchen) and needs a refresh, and the absence of complimentary items (such as soap/handwash and a welcome pack e.g. - tea/coffee, local cake/biscuits etc (as shown in the photos promoting the property!)) are noticeable by their absence. Also, the standard of cleaning is in need of improvement (the cooker and kitchen sink were dirty on our arrival). If these items were to be addressed, it would easily be a five star property.

Thank you for your comments. We are pleased to hear that you enjoyed your stay. We take all comments on board. As the property is self catering, items such as a welcome pack is not always provided. We will pass on your comments regarding the cleanliness of the property to our Housekeeping Team. • "Lovely old world cottage at a sensible price point."

Great location in Chapel stile. All facilities were provided, large dishwasher etc. Decent size smart TV. The little village shop provided everything we needed for the stay. Would be happy to stay again if the opportunity arose. I think some of the negative reviews reflected things that have since been resolved. The garden was high up some steep steps, so not suitable for pets but there are other places to take the dog nearby. Parking was not available directly outside but it was possible about 20 seconds walk away so not an issue really. A couple of small points. When we arrived there was no hand soap in the property. I left some soap bars which I wonder if they threw away or left for the next resident. Maybe this point is more for Lakelovers. It is next to the church and oddly the Church bell next door rang out at all hours. Typically midnight and 6am so it was impossible to get more than 6 hours sleep. I may have imagined it but I think it also rang at 1am and 2am on one night. If it was my cottage I would definitely put in a complaint to the Council about noise at unsocial hours. I mean the bells are lovely on occasion but no way should they ring between 8pm and 8am. I suppose this applies to all accommodation in Chapel Stile.

We are glad that overall you enjoyed your stay. In response to your other comments we are providing a selection of small soaps and bath sachets as well as some ear plugs and leaving them in the small drawers to the right hand side of the oven. You are right that the church bells do ring out affecting all properties in the village - it has been the settled will of the actual residents of the village to keep it that way. We will pass on your comments. Property Owner

Very well equipped kitchen and comfortable bedrooms. Downside- no Wi-Fi connection, street car parking a lottery, no fuel for the fire and tired lounge furniture. Would I recommend? Yes, the location is a big plus for the outdoor lovers

Thank you for your feedback. Our WiFi was accidentally disconnected by BT for a short period but was reconnected within the fortnight and I can reassure future guests is working well again now. We have ordered a new sofa and armchairs but as we insist on British made these will take until early Jan/Feb '23 to arrive given manufacture lead time. Wood and kindling for our wood burning stove is available at the Co-Op store close by but we don't supply it. Property Owner

  • "The cottage is beautiful and the owner clearly loves their property."

The kitchen is well stocked with everything you need, the cottage has lots of space to store everything too. It’s very good for a family! However, the cottage clearly hadn’t had a deep clean for some time. We also had an issue where the cleaners were late which meant that we couldn’t get into our property at the specified time. Lakelovers did communicate this to the property owner who gave us compensation for having to leave the property. However, when we returned to the property, there was clear evidence that the property hadn’t had deep clean and I’m not sure the hoover had even been ran around. There were spider webs which had clearly been there for some time, which would have been caught by the hoover with ease. There was also dust on several pieces of furniture and under the beds in my daughters room. I also had to clean the shelves in a couple of the cupboards. Sadly, even though this was passed onto lakelovers, nothing was done and no other cleaners came out to property during in our stay. Overall, the property in a fabulous location, has great space and facilities for families. However, the cleaners are letting you down!

Thank you for your comments. There was a problem here with respect to timings whereby you arrived when the cleaners had also expected to be able to access the property. This was not your issue but ours - the arrangements put in for the Covid-19 pandemic had been stood down by Lakelovers but we were still working on the original timings. The cleaners were then under pressure to get round and allow you back into the property. They have assured me they most certainly did hoover the property and then offered to come back the following day when you made your ongoing issue apparent. Property Owner

  • "Sadly the cottage is tired and worn."

In particular there is a really pungent smell of damp in the kitchen cupboards by the sink which was really unpleasant and required us to wash pans and crockery before we could use them. The washing up bowl was filthy (we have photos we can share with you) and the upstairs bathroom also has issues with damp. The tiles were black in places and whilst an attempt had been made to clean them this was very poor (again we have photos). The sitting room furniture had seen better days and again everytime you got up from the sofa your clothing felt damp as if the sofa was wet/ damp too. We appreciate that properties of this age will have issues with water ingress and damp but there are clearly some significant leaks that need addressing more substantially. Likewise the fridge is showing signs of wear and tear and is limited in size for the number of people the property houses.

Thank you for your feedback. At the time you visited we had just lost our housekeeper and the heating had been switched off for several weeks . There were some issues for us with the changeover period as we sought to get a replacement. The cottage is cosy but does benefit from a low level of heating being kept on between bookings. A new sofa and armchairs have been ordered and will be with us in the New Year. I can assure future guests that the bathroom tiling has been deep cleaned - the reported problem was due to plaster scattered on the tiles from their original fitting - our workmen have managed to get this off. • "Lovely cosy cottage in a fantastic area."

Walks from the door in every direction and several good pubs walkable from the door. We would definitely book again as Langdale is a super area out of season when there are less people around. We had a problem with the heating which turned out to be an empty gas bottle. Luckily one of the party was familiar with this but others may not have known how to rectify it. Also the appliances manual was nowhere to be found, even after looking where the info pack said it was supposed to be. However our holiday was not spoiled and I’m certain the issue would have been promptly sorted if we hadn’t fixed it ourselves. It was the only minor drawback to a long list of positives from a well equipped kitchen (apart from only 2 dishwasher tablets and no dish cloth) to a beautiful garden and comfy beds.

The cottage was spotlessly clean and very comfortable with beautiful views from the terraced garden. Chapel Stile is a great spot for exploring the surrounding area on foot and there are several handy walking guides in the cottage for those not familiar with the Langdales. The local shop and pub are excellent and only a short walk away. I am sure we will be back to stay here again.

  • "A few snagging issues that I telephoned through earlier today, just to make your company aware of them so they can be sorted before they become big problems."

The biggest problem was with the major noise seepage from Priest End Cottage from the owner's son & 11 of his friends on our last three nights stay. I made Wheelwright's aware of the problem on two separate occasions (called in at their office Wednesday & again on Friday before we left) whilst up there & have just informed your young chap when I rang earlier. It seems the owners of Priest End thought nothing of breaking H&S or Covid regulations & need educating about both. In all the many years we've been having holidays in Chapel Stile we have never had this level of noise disruption happen before - & it's not something either myself or my husband needed when we both have heart problems now. I hope that both yourselves & Wheelwrights can work together to ensure that the owners of Priest End face penalties for what they allowed to happen because it doesn't take a genius to work out that a large group of late teens/early 20 somethings are going to kick off when let out on their own! Otherwise, the cottage was as lovely & the garden as big a joy as last time we stayed (2019) & just as quiet, restful & peaceful up until the final 3 days.

Disappointed that we were not contacted to let us know washing machine was broken. We’d have brought more clothes if we’d been informed. We brought the minimum thinking we could wash them. We had problems with neighbours using our garden. It suggests in the cottage information we should confront anyone using our garden. Not sure it should be up to us on our holiday to do this. Perhaps a sign under the current one suggesting supervision of children explaining garden if for use of White Lion Cottage residents only.

Thank you for your feedback. We appreciate the time taken to send your observations which we have passed onto the owner to address as soon as possible. About the location

LANGDALE

Often referred to as Great Langdale, to distinguish it from nearby Little Langdale, Langdale's name comes from the Old Norse for 'long valley'. Langdale is a u-shaped valley formed by glaciers. It encompasses the two villages of Chapel Stile and Elterwater, as well as the hamlet of High Close. Set in the centre of the Lake District, Langdale is probably best known for its mountains, from the Langdale Pikes – a group of mountains on the northern side of the village – to England’s highest mountain, Scafell Pike. Rock climbers will also love Raven Crag, Gimmer Crag and White Ghyll. There Not surprisingly Langdale is also famous for it’s spectacular views, including Dungeon Ghyll Force Waterfall, Harrison Stickle and Pike of Stickle. it is an extremely popular holiday destination and loved by hikers, climbers, fell runners and lovers of the outdoors in general.
