  • "Very pleased with the property."

Would have liked shelving in en-suite for toiletries. Drain plugs needed cleaned, other peoples hair in them. Parking tight if normal or large car, not helped by another cottage using 2 cars and 2 spaces. Fortunately it worked out okay

It is in an excellent location with plenty of walks on the doorstep. The cottage in beautiful, very happy here. Think I could happily retire here. We loved having the log burner on in the evenings, even though it was August! Loved the new garden with a perfect view.

  • "As we approached Applethwaite Cottage we knew we were in for a treat."

It didn't disappoint. What a gem, just what we needed to relax and unwind. What a view too! It really felt like home with all the mod cons and tasteful interior. Great walks or relaxing in front of the log burner. We'e had a great time and will definitely be coming back.

  • "I would like to say how much we enjoyed not only the amazing location but the high standard in which we found the cottage - everything was fabulous from the furnishings and bathrooms - spotless - even had wi fi so we could stay in touch if we needed."

It's perfect for 4 people in a central location for Ambleside and Windemere and we were also able to find a few walks locally without the need to drive - a welcome relief on a bank holiday ...We could also walk to 2 great local pubs for food and a well earned drink so we didn't mess up the kitchen too much- and with the weather even managed to have breakfast outside for 2 mornings with a great view of the valley opposite. I just wish we could always book the cottage and the weather!

  • "A real gem of a property in a lovely area."

Tastefully decorated with all the modern up to date conveniences but still retaining its cottage charm. The beds are really comfortable, and the stylish soft furnishings made this an excellent place to stay. We will certainly return in the future.

The property

Applethwaite Cottage is a superb contemporary Lakeland Cottage set in the pretty conservation village of Troutbeck, 5 minutes’ drive from Windermere.

On entering the cottage, you are greeted by the large open plan living space with oak floors throughout and a lovely wood-burning stove.

The kitchen is well equipped and offers all you may need.

The cosy lounge area is spacious with a bay window offering panoramic view out across the Troutbeck Valley.

Upstairs, the cosy king-size master bedroom is complete with open beams and a contemporary en-suite.

The second bedroom offers a comfortable double bed and compliments the master bedroom.

A modern family bathroom includes bath with overhead shower, basin and WC.

Originally part of a larger Victorian property this cottage has been tastefully refurbished to a high standard.

The cottage offers a spacious and social living space, with outstanding views down the fell, outdoor garden furniture and barbeque area.

Just a short drive from shops and restaurants in Windermere village, Lake Windermere itself and the vibrant lake shore communities of Bowness and Ambleside, the Troutbeck Valley is a peaceful haven away from the rush.

Spectacular Lakeland fells surround this lush valley; scattered with historic Lakeland houses and pretty woodlands, and two great pubs: The Mortal Man, and the Queens Head, both renowned for their excellent food, Cumbrian produce and cosy fireside ambience.

Perfect for a special occasion.

There are many walks from your doorstep, or you could drive over Kirkstone Pass towards Ullswater, you'll pass Brothers Water - one of our favourite spots for a leisurely Sunday stroll.

For exploring further afield, despite the blissfully secluded feel of the Troutbeck Valley, you're never too far from the main linking roads throughout the Lake District.

About the location

Windermere 3 miles; Ambleside 4 miles.

The small Lakeland village of Troutbeck can be found between its more famous neighbours Windermere and Ambleside, close by the Kirkstone Pass. A mixture of houses, cottages and farms, the village is scattered along a narrow lane bordered by a drystone wall. Many of these buildings date back to the 17th Century with features such as mullioned windows and heavy cylindrical chimneys and the northern end boasts its own 17th century inn. Close by, the bustling towns of Windermere and Ambleside are popular with visitors, providing a range of amenities to suit all tastes. Lake Windermere offers boat trips, including the lakeside ferry to the Lakeside Aquarium and Grizedale Forest Park. The ‘Windermere Steamboat Museum’ displays a fascinating collection of boats whilst children will enjoy the ‘World of Beatrix Potter’ in Bowness, where technology brings her characters to life. Within easy reach of destinations such as Coniston Water, Kendal, Keswick and the Lakeland Mountains, Troutbeck is ideally situated for exploring all that the region has to offer.
