Christine was very welcoming but not intrusive. Everything met expectations. Have recommended it to other family members and we would certainly book it again.

  • "Quirky little place in a great location."

Might have been too quirky for us. Host lovely and welcoming and cottage lovely and warm. Few things let place down, having to drive to windermere to collect key and on leaving do trip again when owners literally joined on to cottage we were staying at. TV was hopeless even after following instructions using 2 remotes. nightmare getting tv on some nights. Cleaners maybe hadn't inspected after last guests had left i.e cutlery plates cups needed washing. Silly things like 1 and a half toilet rolls and maybe a thimble of washing up liquid. Been to many places in the Lakes and everywhere else pretty well equipped. Anyhow didn't spoil our week we had a fabulous time walking and just grateful to be there.

Warm and cosy, this makes a great base for exploring the area. The owner is next door and came to say hello on the first day, providing essential information. The place was very clean and had everything needed for our stay. The Post Office cafe and shop over the road was very handy - excellent scones! We can also recommend Sunday lunch at ‘The Mortal Man’.

Lovely little cottage. Clean and super cosy. Very friendly host. Great location if you have a car. Pretty much halfway between Windermere and Ambleside. Lovely selection of walking directions provided, one of which starts at the church 5 min walk from the cottage (add an hour on top of the estimated duration). Couldn't figure out how to start the gas fire, but I'm sure our host would have showed me if I'd asked, and the heating worked fine, so it was just for the visuals. Thanks for an amazing stay. • "Absolutely lovely property- can't fault it at all."

The cottage was very comfortable and had everything we needed with a very well equipped kitchen. Bed was very comfortable and cottage was warm and cosy. The owners live next door and were really helpful + regularly checked in with us but gave us our own space. The location is brilliant, many walks that can be done from the door and only a 10 minute drive to Ambleside or Windermere (but you can also walk there if you like!). The village is lovely and peaceful with nice local pubs and a tearoom with a small shop. The only negative was our key collection process which had nothing to do with the owners. We were instructed to pick up our keys from the lake lovers office in Windermere where they would be in a keysafe out of hours (5pm on a Bank Holiday). The keys were not in the keysafe when we arrived so we spend over 45 minutes on the phone and waiting in the cold for a maintenance on-call worker to come and get into the office to obtain the keys which had been left in a box inside by mistake. This was frustrating but overall the stay was so brilliant we would definitely still recommend it- just the key collection process should be improved!

Thank you for your feedback. We are glad to hear that you enjoyed your stay at High Fold. We will pass on your comments regarding the key collection, so that we are able to improve the process. We hope to welcome you back again. Property Owner

Cottage has lots of character with some very old features. Kitchen area could do with some attention and rectification of minor faults, i.e. fridge door due to proximity of oven and leaky kettle. • "Generally we had a very enjoyable and comfortable stay in High Fold."

Loved the location. However, there were a number of issues we would like to bring to your attention for improvement. 1. We did not receive a key for the property in advance by post to our home address as indicated in the paperwork and had to approach a neighbour to borrow their key. Thankfully they were at home when we arrived. 2. The barest minimum of cutlery and crockery were provided and this was at times inconvenient. 3. The electric kettle was temperamental at the on/off switch, or it might have been the seating connection on the base. 4. The fridge door needed pushing shut firmly at the bottom as well as at the handle in order to ensure fully sealed closure. Otherwise the fridge motor was running excessively to combat warm air entry. 5. The WC cistern kept running into the pain after flushing. This was not excessive but did waste water and indicated a faulty flush mechanism. 6. The waste bin under the sink doesn’t work well when something is in the bag! It is restricted by the shelf in the cupboard and will not allow the door to close fully. This system does not work well and an independent pedal bin at the side of the sink cupboard would work much better. 7. Excessively creaky floor boards on the first floor (bedroom and, most noticeably, the bathroom) were a constant nuisance, particularly if you needed to get up in the night. If this problem could be rectified or at least improved in some way it would noticeably enhance the experience of staying in the property. 8. All other cottages we have stayed in have provided a selection of books, local maps, walking guides, visitor's book and a full tenant's guide to the property. None of these were available. Despite this lengthy list of comments, we did enjoy our stay and would not rule out booking the same property again. Kind regards, Paul & Chris Greenfield

  • "With Covid still a concern due to the rise of the Delta variant, we were quite nervous of going on holiday for the first time in nearly two years."

However, I’m glad we took the plunge as High Fold in Troutbeck was just what we needed. For the most part we were able keep away from the crowds because of the numerous beautiful walks available in and around the Troutbeck valley directly from the doorstep. The owner, who lived next door, was very friendly and helpful. High Fold itself is very old and apparently in times long past was the dairy. In its current use as a holiday let, everything worked exactly as it should and we’d be very happy to stay there again.

It absolutely oozes charm , we are super warm and cosy and the gas log fire is a joy (no mess). Everthing was perfect when we arrived- spotlessly clean and well equipped. We have a huge bath, the bedroom is lovely, and I adore the creaky floors, thick walls and ages old doors. So much character, I may refuse to leave on Saturday!

About the location

AMBLESIDE

Grasmere 4.4 miles; Windermere 4.7 miles; Keswick 16.7 miles.

Lying at the northern tip of Lake Windermere, England’s largest lake, Ambleside makes a superb base for touring the central Lakes, with Grasmere and the Langdale Valley just a short drive away. There is plenty to do here - cruises, boat trips and watersports on Lake Windermere itself and numerous shops, restaurants and pubs in the village to suit all tastes. On the lakeside at Waterhead, the parkland offers lovely views down the lake and a short stretch of beach, whilst a walk in the other direction, following Stock Ghyll through woodland, will bring you to the entrancing waterfall of Stock Ghyll Force. Along with the Lake and the great walking on offer, Ambleside is also famous for its annual rushbearing ceremony and the diminutive 17th century “Bridge House” - one of the most photographed buildings in the Lake District and now the National Trust Information Centre.
