  • "Overall a lovely cosy property with an excellent location and very well equipped kitchen."

Cleanliness was generally very good although the sofa blankets where full of dog hairs which my wife discovered after putting one around her and getting covered in them. There was also inadequate fire wood for the log burner and I had to go and purchase some myself. A property with a burner at this time of year should have a well stocked supply of wood and kindling for guests. The cottage was lovely and had a very welcoming and cosy feel. Unfortunately when we arrived there was no water however this was not the fault of anyone to do with the property and united utilities has it back on by the time we got back from the pub. We were very pleased with the response of the agency and the owners when we informed them of the problem and they did all they could to help.

  • "While the property was lovely and well kitted out it wasn't cleaned to a very good standard."

Dog fur everywhere when we arrived (which we can appreciate is hard to clean, as we have our own!) and cobwebs/strings of dust in the corners of rooms, which was a little disappointing. The downstairs also smelled quite badly of damp which I see the owners are trying to remedy with a humidifier but it wasn't a pleasant place to sleep in. The house would really benefit from a bath too.

The cottage is comfortable and has breathtaking views. Highly recommended, however we did think it would be a bit of a squash for 4 people if the weather was poor. The only things that would have enhanced our stay would have been some logs on arrival (previous guests have mentioned this) and a back door key so that dogs could be taken directly to the utility room. Perhaps there was one but it wasn't obvious to us!

However , two small things: Was surprised to find Christmas decorations still up in the middle of January. Remotes in both Dab radio and television needed batteries replacing. Really enjoyed our stay despite being snowed in and unable to get the car out of the village for two days.

It was the cleanest property we have ever stayed in and had everything you need for your stay. It’s warm and cosy, the radiators are easy to use and provide adequate heat, the log fire works brilliantly. All the kitchen appliances are top quality. The bedding and towels were top quality, beds and mattresses clean and very comfortable. The views spectacular from the terrace. A well looked after property that you can tell is loved by the owners. Lots of great walks accessible straight from the property and amenities nearby at Ambleside. Will definitely be back.

  • "We truly enjoyed staying in Pennys Cottage and exploring the Troutbeck area."

We thought the cottage was perfect for us as a couple with our dog. The cottage was clean and has an efficient use of space. Streaming was no problem and we had 4G service alongside functional Wi-Fi. We would have appreciated a few emergency amenities for power outages, such as a torch and maybe a few LED/battery operated candles, since the power was out for 10 hours due to storm Pia. Thankfully we had brought our own fire supplies as none were provided. The old post office Cafe was a lovely place to have breakfast and coffee, while the mortal man is a super cozy traditional pub with amazing food. There are great walks to do right out the door. All in all we had a wonderful stay and would love to return!

Such a delight to wake up to each morning, particularly during lambing season. Well equipped cottage. 2 public houses close by, The Mortal Man and The Queens Head, both serving food which was handy after a long walk. Walks from the doorstep into Ambleside and surrounding area. Troutbeck Church has a beautiful stained glass window and The Old Post Office is good for tea, coffee and cakes with a friendly service. The bed on the first floor is smaller than the lower ground bedroom so good luck with who gets that! I couldn’t find a baking tray for the oven? There could well be one somewhere? Nice big bathroom and shower with plenty of hot water. Such a lovely setting which really enables you to unwind and forget the madness of the world. Thoroughly recommend Troutbeck as a location.

We were really happy on it facilities, layout and views from the lounge. The location of Troutbeck gives you quiet position but with easy access to surrounding villages and towns. Also with two good local pubs. As a suggestion it would be nice to have had condiments, cling film and oil for cooking. Because at times of not so nice weather, you can cook for yourselves. The only problem we had was that the bottom step of the stairs was in shadow of an evening and was missed on a couple of occasions. We had been a little concerned about the cleanliness of the cottage but we needn’t have worried it was very clean, and we noticed a dehumidifier had been installed to combat the mustiness that some people had mentioned. The cottage was decorated to a high speck and we loved the little touches like the Hardy mugs, to the point we bought some to bring home. To top it all the weather was great, sun shone most of the time and although not ‘hot’ it was comfortable to sit on the balcony for morning coffee. Although we didn’t use all the utensils etc (I refuse to cook on my holidays) there was a good range of kitchenware, dishwasher tablets, washing up liquid, soap etc. Millie our dog had a fantastic time watching the lambs in the field opposite and says thank you for her treats. After a really fantastic week we decided to book there and then for the same time next year, here’s hoping the weather is as good!!! Thank you for a really relaxing holiday, keep up the good standards you’ve got a gem of a cottage there.

  • "This was our first visit to Penny’s cottage and would probably return if the prices reflected, which in out option don’t as you go later in to the year and to expensive."

The cottage is in my favourite area of the Lakes so the location did not disappoint. On arrival at the cottage we found that the cottage hadn’t been left clean for our arrival. The floor had not been cleaned, the dishwater was still full of dirty pots and on opening a cupboard it was full of crumbs and towels had just been thrown on to the beds, so the first hour was spent cleaning the cottage, very disappointing. Having got over our arrival disappointments we had a most enjoyable week.

We would like to thank you for your feedback. We are sorry that the property was not cleaned to our usual standard on arrival. Unfortunately we weren’t aware of the cleaning issues you found at the property as we would have resolved these immediately. However your comments have been passed to the Housekeeping Manager to investigate further to ensure this does not happen again. We hope this does not deter you from visiting again. Best wishes. Nestling in the picturesque village of Troutbeck. The view from the deck is stunning in all weathers, and we had all weathers!! The cottage is tastefully decorated with lovely personal touches. Very comfortable beds and a great shower. The boot/laundry room is a brilliant touch for outdoor kit and dog owners. There is a woodburner but the owners do not provide any wood and there's no suggestion of where to get wood from locally. It would have been great to be given the option to buy wood. The nights were very chilly in the living room with only a couple of electric radiators. And of course a fire in the woodburner would have completed the experience. There is a problem with a damp (smell) in the lower ground floor, which is really to be expected from a stone cottage in the Lakes and I appreciate it's hard to overcome, and there is a dehumidifier that comes on every day to counter this. We would definitely come back to this cottage.

We had read the comments from previous visitors about cleanliness but our experience was that the cottage was very clean and tidy when we arrived. The welcome basket (biscuits, Prosecco, coffee capsules) was a nice touch. We weren’t provided with a dishcloth or dishwasher tablets - not sure if that was an oversight? The main benefits of the cottage are the location and of course the view over the valley which is stunning.

  • "The internal quality of the cottage fixtures and fittings is excellent with the bizarre exception of a very worn, and for me, unusable frying pan."

Additional kitchen cupboard space would have been useful for dry food storage. The superficial cleanliness of the cottage was okay. However, I doubt it has been thoroughly cleaned for some time. Externally, the front and rear gardens are overgrown. Our pleasure in seeing the cottage for real on arrival was spoilt because of the weeds and accumulated organic detritus. The rear garden is so overgrown that we had to stoop quite low to get out of the back gate. The balcony is a lovely feature, allowing us to enjoy the splendid openness and beauty of the location. However, the condition of the wooden balustrade is poor and unsightly. The weather has taken its toll on the paintwork. The steps down to the rear garden are overgrown. Had the cottage not been so expensive to hire for four nights, I would have been less critical. For what we paid, I expected a much better overall standard. Criticisms aside, because of the excellent standard of internal refurbishment, the cottage still warrants four stars.

Throughout our Lakeland travels we have stayed in various cottages throughout the region and can say without fear of contradiction that, whilst the cottage itself is one of the nicest we have ever stayed at, the view is without parallel and certainly worth the rental fee alone. About the location

Windermere 3 miles; Ambleside 4 miles.

The small Lakeland village of Troutbeck can be found between its more famous neighbours Windermere and Ambleside, close by the Kirkstone Pass. A mixture of houses, cottages and farms, the village is scattered along a narrow lane bordered by a drystone wall. Many of these buildings date back to the 17th Century with features such as mullioned windows and heavy cylindrical chimneys and the northern end boasts its own 17th century inn. Close by, the bustling towns of Windermere and Ambleside are popular with visitors, providing a range of amenities to suit all tastes. Lake Windermere offers boat trips, including the lakeside ferry to the Lakeside Aquarium and Grizedale Forest Park. The ‘Windermere Steamboat Museum’ displays a fascinating collection of boats whilst children will enjoy the ‘World of Beatrix Potter’ in Bowness, where technology brings her characters to life. Within easy reach of destinations such as Coniston Water, Kendal, Keswick and the Lakeland Mountains, Troutbeck is ideally situated for exploring all that the region has to offer.
