  • "This was our fifth year stopping at high winder cottages, each time we stay is great from the old owners to the new ones, we have stopped in all the cottages including winder barn, winder ghyll, winder green and little winder, not stopped in the new one yet but plan to in the future."

    Each time they have been clean and any problems we have had have been sorted quickly. What make them great for us personally is the location, perfect for the fells,pubs, pooley bridge and less than a hours drive to Penrith, Windermere and Keswick and Glenriding. We love walking so the location is perfect for us to walk to how town, askham and pooley bridge.from where the cottages are located.we do a mixture of eating in and visiting the local pubs in pooley bridge inn, crown inn and punch bowl all within walking distance less than a hours, we mostly go with family members and find them that can’t walk that far go down in the car and we meet them there. So for us a perfect location for larger amounts of people, the most that went was 16 family members.will definitely be booking again in the future. David leam

  • "Absolutely fabulous!"

    The cottage is beautiful and high quality. Spotlessly clean and everything is catered for. The views are to die for, watching the red squirrels was the highlight of our visit. I would add that it is off the beaten track, but that adds to its charm. The owners were most helpful too. We will definitely go back.

  • "This was our second time at the cottage ."

    Home from home and just a haven of tranquility . Great location within reach of The Lakes. Also enjoyed our trips to Fabi’s Fabulous Milk for shakes and coffee. Superb setting with all amenities . Wildlife galore - red squirrels to !

  • "Cottage and grounds very clean and well maintained, good communication from owners prior to arrival."

    We liked the "away from it all" feeling and the views over Penrith and the North Pennines are amazing - we also enjoyed seeing red squirrels and some unusual birds around the feeders. Some good walking routes pass by the house, we made several visits to Heugh Scar viewpoint, and the higher Ullswater fells are only a short drive away.

  • "Beautiful views and location."

    Everything was as described on the website. The cottage was cosy and nicely dressed for Christmas. My only concern is that we only received information about the access roads after booking, when directions for key collection were given. At this time of the year the narrow 1 mile of public road was extremely muddy and the farm access road had lots of potholes many of which could not be avoided. Some people may be concerned about their cars.

  • "Had a lovely short break at Winder Ghyll."

    The property was clean, comfortable and a great location to visit Ullswater. Lots of nice touches including the helpful information pack sent from the owners, arrival gift, and dog paddock. Would definitely come back for a longer stay next time.

  • "It's a lovely setting and peaceful."

    The birdlife and other wildlife is a delight. Well located for walking straight onto the hills. It's comfortable, plenty of hot water, and the owners were very helpful with an internet problem (due to the network provider not the property).

  • "We had a wonderful week staying at Winder Ghyll in May."

    The location of the cottage is ideal for exploring the Lakes, and it was great to be so close to Ullswater and Pooley Bridge. The Winder Cottages site itself is beautiful with unbeatable views of the surrounding countryside. It is wonderful for wildlife lovers too! From the comfort of the cottage, we saw red squirrels feeding and playing around the tree mere metres away, flashes of a stoat scurrying past the window, and a wonderful array of birds. We also spent enjoyable evenings sitting out in the garden area, watching and listening to tawny owls in the wooded area til long after sunset. The cottage has pretty much everything you need, and the welcome biscuits were a lovely surprise! We would definitely recommend this place to others and would love to return ourselves!

  • "A wonderful cottage in the perfect location for exploring Ullswater and surrounding areas."

    The views are spectacular (from every window) and there is an abundance of wildlife which we happily watched every morning whilst eating our breakfast (my 11 and 15 year olds didn’t touch their mobile phones!!). The cottage was a home from home with everything supplied (bed linen, towels, cutlery etc.) and we absolutely loved our 3 night stay. The information provided by Ged and Julie prior to our stay was most helpful and they were happy to help with any questions we had. If you are looking for a ‘get away from it all’ place to stay we would highly recommend Winder Ghyll.

Winder Ghyll is an inviting, stone-built, single-storey cottage, nestled along a secluded country lane and resting high in the Lakeland Fells above the northern end of Ullswater, near the quaint village of Askham and the popular Pooley Bridge, Cumbria.

With a gas fire, ground-floor living and within walking distance of the unparalleled scenery of the Lake District National Park, this cottage welcomes family, friends, and two furry friends, idyllic for a rural escape.

Utilise the well-equipped kitchen/diner, ideal for preparing and enjoying delicious meals together, while the sitting room is the perfect place to relax and unwind in the evening, creating a warm atmosphere for quality time with your loved ones.

You can also let your four-legged friends let off some steam in the dog field to help tire them out before bedtime.

As the evenings draw to a close, discover the two plush bedrooms, including a spacious king-size and a well-presented twin, to catch your night's sleep after a long day of exploring.
