  • "Ideally situated to use the local bus service."

Parking immediately outside the front door. Very well equipped bungalow. The outside temperature dropped during our stay so the central heating needs to be reset. When staying at the Lakes in future, we would definitely use Apple Tree Cottage.

  • "Comfortable cottage & had everything we required."

A great base to see the area. We did find the lane but drove past as I thought my sat nav was taking me off road. There is no road sign or any indication there are holiday lets at the end of the lane. A sign would be helpful. Shower was good but the door is very narrow & feels like a tight squeeze to get in. We are certainly not plus size so this could be an issue for some.

  • "The only problem is with the directions to the cottage on Sykes website."

You are directed into Mirk Lane, then asked to turn left at the T-junction. There is no T-junction, you arrive directly at the gate to the property. It would assist if Sykes could change the directions to reflect this.

  • "Lovely small cottage within small set of properties with countryside outlook."

Big enough for holiday needs and felt very safe and peaceful. Location does allow a short walk to the lake but you will probably need a car for longer lakeside walks if you want to avoid walking along the main road for some distance. Windermere town is a few miles away for provisions at supermarket. There are bus stops on main road at exit of property driveway so you can travel on these very cheaply along with being able to enjoy the view rather than concentrating on the road. We felt very comfortable at Apple Tree Cottage and would certainly love to come back.

  • "We very much liked Apple Tree Cottage and its facilties."

It was well laid out and very homely. Our only disappointment was the shower door. The access is very small and for someone with limited mobility due to suffering 3 strokes this did pose a problem especially over 7 days.

Thank you for your helpful feedback. We are extremely pleased that you liked Apple Tree Cottage and found it to be homely. We take on board the comments that you make about the shower door. This was newly fitted last year, but we will look to see if there is anything we can do to improve the access into the shower cubicle. Thank you for raising this issue, it is very important. It is worth noting, also, that there is a step into the shower cubicle, so for anyone with limited mobility, it could be a problem. We will look to redesign the bathroom in the future, but for now, we wish to make guests with limited mobility aware about this step into the shower. If you wish to have more information on this, please do have a chat with Sykes before booking. With best wishes, Caroline and Dave, Apple Tree Cottage owners. Property Owner

Washing machine did not work due to clogged and filthy filter. Rectified myself. Additional bin bags not provided. No dishwasher. Shower controls extremely stiff to operate and access to cubical very narrow. Man of XXL proportions would be unable to enter. Property is well positioned but over priced for what it is.

Thank you for your feedback. We are very sorry that you found certain aspects of the cottage to be under par. We have spoken with our cleaner and we sincerely apologise that the washing machine was clogged up - this has now been rectified. It is correct that there is no dishwasher in the cottage. We have never noticed that the shower controls are stiff, but will of course check this out. In terms of the size of the shower door, we cannot apologise enough. We have had newly installed shower doors recently and the model of the door, although looking great, produces a narrower gap than one would expect. Very well equipped. Not so much a criticism as a comment. The shower entrance door is exceedingly narrow for anyone of a larger or not very mobile frame, and may be difficult for anyone with mobility issues, particularly as once inside the property everywhere is flat.

Thank you very much for your feedback which we really appreciate. We are really sorry that you found the shower doors to be narrow. We have recently had new shower doors fitted and whilst we love the fact that they are brand new and more up to date, we do agree that the design seems to give a narrower opening than we would have expected. We will look into this and see if there are some adjustments to make. Thank you for bringing this to our attention. For any future guests, please note that there is a step into the shower. This is not an issue in the majority of cases, but we would like to note this for any guests with mobility issues. Thank you again for your comments. The only downside was that upon arrival I had to clean grease off the top of the oven and worktop. I didn’t mind this initially as it wasn’t a big job, but when the cleaner turned up at 9.50am on the day of departure saying she had to clean thoroughly and she had to get in as a storm was coming it did seem slightly ironic.

Thank you for your feedback. We agree with you - the cottage is indeed in a beautiful location and we are so pleased that you were able to enjoy this lovely part of the Lakes! We are glad you found Apple Tree to be well equipped - we have worked hard to think of everything that guests might need to ensure a comfortable and enjoyable stay. We are extremely sorry that the top of the oven wasn’t up to scratch and have contacted Sykes immediately about this - the cleanliness of our cottage is of paramount importance to us and we pay an extra fee to Sykes for an additional check prior to guests arriving to ensure that things like this don’t happen. It is a warm, well equipped cottage - perfect for two. We enjoyed the little basket of goodies on arrival - thank you! Unfortunately, we do have to comment on the bed - the mattress is very soft and we both rolled into the middle hollow, making us very uncomfortable and our sleep disturbed. A replacement firm mattress would sort this out! Also, a note for your cleaners - there were several light bulbs out in the lounge area, and under the kitchen cupboards.

Thank you for your feedback which we really appreciate. We are delighted to know that you found the cottage to be warm and perfect for two and that you liked the walks from the door - the ability to leave your car behind and walk straight onto the fells is one of the things we also love about Apple Tree. We are so sorry that you found the mattress to be too soft. We know how important a good night's sleep is and we hope that every guest at Apple Tree is able to sleep well and hopefully wake up feeling refreshed and re-energised! We take your comments very seriously. The mattress is a high quality Hypnos mattress and we are disappointed to know that it felt too soft. The cottage is part of a characterful complex of properties on the Merewood Estate, quiet and private, with well kept grounds. I would just mention that if, like me, guests are considering this property as being suitable for people with limited mobility, that the access to the shower is 10 inches high, with a drop down into the shower tray of 5 inches. Unfortunately this proved too difficult for me, but my husband said it was a lovely shower! The bed is comfortable, but the matress is very soft, with a noticable hollow on the right side, and in the middle, if one of us turned over, we landed in a heap in the middle! Altogether a very enjoyable stay at Apple Tree Cottage.

Thank you for your review and we are delighted that you both had such an enjoyable stay at Apple Tree. We are sorry that the step into the shower was too high for you and we are glad you have raised this so that future guests are aware, in case they have mobility issues. We refurbished the cottage two and half years ago, including a new premier inn quality Hypnos mattress. We will look at this asap and make a decision around replacing it. This property is ideal for 2 people and the location is ideal. The one thing that may stop me from returning to this property is the size of the bed. The bed is very small and it made for uncomfortable sleep in the evening. By removing one or both of the bedside cabinets a larger bed could be added which would make this property perfect.

Thank you for your comment. We are so pleased to know that you found Apple Tree Cottage to be ideal in all respects other than the size of the bed - we are sorry to hear that you did not find it to be large enough. The bed base and mattress were purchased new when we refurbished in March 2019. The base is a Silent Night oak base and the mattress is a Hypnos mattress, the same type as in Premier Inns, which we purchased especially with the comfort of our guests in mind. The mattress is a standard UK double and we are really sorry that the size didn't suit you. We thank you for giving us the maximum rating for all other aspects of the cottage. Good walks can be found from the cottage itself with some satisfying views over Windemere by taking the footpath from the location (turn left after going through the gate at the entrance.) The cottage itself is well equipped with the basics for your own catering if you so wish and everything was very clean and tidy. Main road very busy most of the time (exceptional circumstances this year - the whole area was busier than usual) but if you fancy a walk into Ambleside it takes about 40 minutes and you won't have the hassle of finding and paying for a car parking space. Would recommend for a walking holiday in stunning scenery provided you don't mind the occasional shower! Ullswater is about a 30 minute drive, Buttermere an hour and ten minutes if you don't mind the last six miles on switchback roads.

The property

Apple Tree Cottage is a wonderful old stone-built semi-detached home on the Merewood Estate, one mile from Troutbeck Bridge, located exactly midway between Ambleside and Windermere, and just a short walk from Lake Windermere.

This spacious cottage is suitable for a couple who wants to enjoy the stunning countryside while being close to the various attractions and activities available in the area.

This cottage boasts a light and airy open-plan living space from which you can see Lake Windermere across the fields and through the trees at certain times of the year.

Outside, there are two patios where you can sit back and relax with a cool drink at any time of day, and you're invited to utilise the communal lawned areas that surround the cottage.

Across the road from the cottage is the Cragwood Country House Hotel, which features a restaurant and afternoon tea and coffee.

The hotel also offers a fantastic outside area where you can sit with a drink and enjoy the wonderful views of the lake.

The cottage is adjacent to the Lake District Visitor Centre at Brockhole, which has gardens, treetop nets, a treetop hike, laser clay shooting, archery, bike hiring, and a cafe.

From here, lake steamers pick up passengers to sail up to Ambleside or down to the lively towns of Bowness and Lakeside.

There are also some charming walks and bridleways to explore directly from the door of this Lake District cottage, up into the beautiful Troutbeck Valley and across to Wansfell, as well as the gardens at Holehird, which are run entirely by volunteers and are an enchanting and inspiring place to explore.

This lovely home, Apple Tree Cottage, is ideal for a romantic getaway at any time of year.
