Stag Cottage had everything we needed for a comfortable and enjoyable stay in the Lake District.

A warm and comfortable place to come back to after a day walking and lovely views to wake up to each morning.

We returned to Stag Cottage for a week this time after weekend visit in November 2025.

Still 5 star and perfect in every way. It is a real pleasure to see the care and thought that Helen puts in to make our holiday so comfortable and relaxing. The area has so much to offer and you will always find something to do no matter what the weather or time of year. David and Angela

We had a fabulous time staying at Stag Cottage over the New Year.

The property was furnished to a very high standard and had everything we would need. The owner had left a number of treats for us which made it extra special. It was very cosy despite the cold weather, with comfy beds, a real fire and board games! The cottage is ideally placed for exploring Keswick and Penrith. We’d love to go back!

Stag Cottage is an ideal base for exploring the North Lake District with Penrith only 10 minutes away for necessities.

It's an extremely comfortable home away from home so your evenings in are just as fulfilling as your days out. The property has an authentic feel to it but with all the modern facilities you could need. The master bed is comfortable and spacious, and the extra deep bath is a huge plus. The owner is extremely responsive and communication was excellent before and during our stay. Overall Stag Cottage ticks every box for the property itself and its location.

We visited here for our mini moon after getting married as a last min spontaneous trip.

We were going to wait for our actually honeymoon later this year but so glad we booked this ! We had such a fab time ! The stag Cottage was a fab size and even though there was only two of us, having two bathrooms was brill. I was really surprised at how spacious the property was. Overlooking some beautiful scenery it just felt so tranquil. We loved this cottage and it was nice we got a little letter/postcard too for our memories box ! Great location also ! What a gem! We will be back

From start to finish Stag Cottage was the perfect stay.

The cottage is really well appointed and maintained and spotlessly clean. Really comfy beds and plenty of hot water- loved the wet room and the lovely deep bath. The views from the cottage are fabulous and ever changing. Helen was a great host and really accommodating. We would highly recommend and would stay here again in a heartbeat.

Stag cottage is a real gem.

It is very comfortable, well equipped & maintained to a high standard with beautiful views to the rear. Comfy beds & very clean. Second stay in this lovely cottage!

Quiet village location with good access to northern fells and lakes, Penrith and Keswick. It was lovely in 2020 but now even better with upgrades the owner Helen has made. Attention to detail is wonderful with beautiful colours, fabrics, bathrooms etc. Good local pubs and off road parking for two cars. Beautiful views across to Ullswater fells. An excellent stay with hopes of returning.

I think this is probably one of the best cottages I have stayed in.

It was clear to me that much thought had gone into making the cottage comfortable, warm and welcoming. All the facilities were spot on. I loved the shower room, my bed was comfortable, I had amazing views to look at and the weather was kind to us. I stayed with my daughter, who also loved it, we both felt the cottage was a wonderful place to relax in and would recommend the cottage to others. We hope to return soon.

A beautifully proportioned and furnished cottage, impeccably clean and comfortable, with all of our needs thought of.

We had a thoroughly enjoyable holiday.

The cottage was ideally located which allowed us to visit all the locations that we had on our list. Stag cottage was well furnished with everything to suit our needs. Many thanks for the Welcome Package. The Red Squirrel paid us a visit on the day of our departure and I managed to get a couple of photos of him before he disappeared. We nearby pubs provided quality meals, and we also made a purchase from one of the nearby Farm Shops.

We had a really enjoyable stay at Stag cottage , the interior has a quality finish, lovely shower, very comfortable lounge area, great views overlooking the paddock & mountains, perfect location close to Keswick & less than an hour to the coast, we would love to return.

Our first visit to this pretty cottage, surrounded by wonderful countryside.

The cottage lacks for nothing. Beautiful garden with comfy seating, enjoyed watching the birds at the bird feeder and seeing pheasants and hares in the field opposite. There are lots of places within easy reach, enjoyed Keswick, Ambleside, Ullswater, to name but a few. Wished we had booked two weeks instead of one!

Our family of four had a wonderful week in Stag Cottage.

The owner had added so much to the property. It was perfect. Beautiful house, beautiful location, and has everything you may need to adventure around the Lake District. Communication with the owner was amazing, and she really cared if we had a good time or not; she remembered our past feedback, and welcomed us back to the house with heartfelt personal touches. Perfect break away, we will come back next year.

Second visit this year!

This holiday let feel’s like home rather than a holiday let. It has everything you need and is very cosy, decorated to a very high standard. The views are stunning even with the low cloud we experienced. It’s a fantastic base for exploring the Lake District. We did a boat cruise on Windermere. Walked a large section of Keswick Lake which is a great easy walk. A visit to Grasmere is a must especially for the gingerbread. We also visited Hawkshead and Coniston. We also went further afield to the Roman fort and museum at Vindolanda. Keep an eye out for the red squirrel in the garden, he visited early one morning. We ate at The Wainright Pub Keswick and Poppi Red in Hawkshead. Can highly recommend Cranstons Food Hall just outside Penrith.

We had a wonderful holiday and would love to return one day, fabulous views and such a cosy cottage.

Stag Cottage was well equipped and comfortable but needs some outside maintainance, the sloping path in the back garden has loose and broken slabs.

The cottage is in a small village that is used by big trucks as a cut through so there is a lot of road noise from early morning untill late at night. This is not the fault of the owner but if we had been aware of this issue we would not have booked this property.

The property was lovely, no expense spared on furnishings and fittings, all done very tastefully

Excellent cottage with great views as an added bonus.

All facilities first class with no expense spared. Location is close to the A66 with easy access to all parts of the Lake District by car. Bus stop in Penruddock meant that Keswick was only 30 minutes away using the once per hour service.

Beautiful cottage with fantastic views, everything that you could need was available, very comfortable.

If the weather had been better we could have made more use of the outside seating with the view. Would definately recommend.

Another lovely week spent at stag cottage.

We love the new wet room and update to the kitchen. Arriving at the cottage is like ‘coming home’ to our little spot in the lakes, all the furnishings are of high quality- Comfy beds & soft fluffy towels, everything you need. The patio in the sun with those views is just the icing on the cake, so glad we had the weather to use it more this time.

We were extremely lucky to be able to book the property last minute, just a few days before and we have had a perfect few days.

The house is immaculate, the decor and attention to detail is clear to see and the owner/host has done an amazing job, we didn’t want to leave! We travelled as a family with our 6 year old who loved the garden and spotting the donkeys in the field behind but then would enjoy a chill watching dvd’s from the cupboard. His room was perfect and the beds so comfy (as was ours!) and we all had a great night sleep as it’s so quiet. We went to Brockholes and also visited Cathedral caves which was fab. The best part was coming home to chill in the lovely warm bath with the log fire on. Even with the cloudy weather we enjoyed wrapping up in blankets and sitting in the garden listening to the peace and quiet. The house has everything anyone could need and more - especially if you like a games night as there were plenty to entertain us. Anyone thinking about booking the house- just do it, you won’t regret it!

We enjoyed a lovely week at Stag Cottage.

It’s decorated to a high standard, it’s very cosy and comfortable and you can see the owner has put a lot of thought into it. The refurb kitchen and wet room are lovely, the kitchen has everything you need too. There is a lovely patio area with plenty of wildlife to look at and the views to the Ullswater hills and fells is stunning. Just a shame the weather wasn’t a little kinder for us to make more use of the patio but you could still appreciate the views from the lounge and bedroom. The cottage is 6 miles away from Penrith with plenty of amenities. It’s 20 minutes to Ullswater and Keswick which is a lovely part of the lakes. Keswick has an easy lake walk and the steamers are great at Ullswater. We also ventured further afield to Kendal and Windermere and west to the coast. Helen sent a couple of emails Fatima make sure everything was okay which we thought was lovely of her. This really is a little gem and we will definitely be returning.

So pleased we chose this little gem of a cottage for our week in the Lakes - beautifully decorated and furnished, clean and cosy, with a fantastic view over rolling fields towards the Ullswater fells.

It's clear that the owner has put a lot of thought into making their guests' time at the cottage as good as possible, and we really appreciated that. Looking forward to planning our next visit!

We overall had a lovely stay.

Really loved the decoration and welcome treats. Only thing was the log burner didn't seem to give off any heat. Moving the dampner didn't seem to have any effect and seemed a little loose. It wasnt a problem though as the heating was perfectly fine, but might be something worth looking at. Lovely cottage within a wonderful location, perfect for our relaxing Christmas stay!

Stag cottage is a real Gem.

A home from home, perfectly situated away from the busy tourist points but close enough to get to all the main areas and amenities for a visit to the lakes. Helen is a wonderful host who ensures everything is well with your stay and is constantly making improvements to this lovely little cottage. Wonderful views- Blencathra on the doorstep! Our second visit and it won’t be our last.

We have had such a lovely time at Stag Cottage.

The cottage is super comfy, cozy and warm and the owners have really thought of everything to make our stay special. The cottage is in a great location and every morning we had a beautiful sunrise from our bedroom window. We will 100% be coming back next year.

We really loved our week there. The cottage is cosy but spacious at the same time, has lovely views, is a real home from home and is one of the best equipped holiday cottages we have stayed at. The location is great for exploring North Cumbria towns and villages, beautiful Ullswater and is perfect for accessing the Northern and Eastern fells if you are doing the Wainwrights! The bath in the new bathroom at the cottage is dreamy after a day's walking! Thanks to the cottage owner for checking in and making sure everything was OK. We would definitely stay again.

It had everything we needed and the owner sent a couple of emails to check that we had arrived and that everything was ok. The village is lovely and quiet but ideally located to reach Keswick and Ullswater in around 20 minutes. We have never booked with Sykes before but we’re very happy with them and would certainly use them again.

The property is cosy and stylish, with lots of attention to detail. Lovely new bathroom upstairs. We were very lucky with the weather and loved sitting outside - views over the garden, the paddock with ponies, to the fells beyond. Good location in Motherby, one of a scattering of houses. Few minutes' drive to Penrith for amenities, supermarkets etc. Very good base for all the Lake District has to offer - we particularly liked Ullswater (very close), Buttermere, Grasmere, Derwent Water (climb The Dodd for superb views) and Ingleton Waterfalls, a little further afield in the Yorkshire Dales. Excellent communication from Helen, the owner of the cottage. Highly recommended - we would definitely like to return!

We had a fantastic stay at Stag Cottage.

The cottage itself is beautifully presented with a gorgeous brand new bathroom and a big bath! It is well situated for visiting all of the northern lakes and has a great view out to the eastern fells. I also managed to catch a glimpse of the red squirrel and barn owl. Will definitely be staying again.

Stag Cottage is fabulous and had everything that we needed.

The beds are so comfortable in both the King size room and the Twin room. The newly refurbished upstairs bathroom is beautifully done with underfloor heating! The location is brilliant and only a short drive to Pooley Bridge and Keswick. Helen was a fantastic host - checking in with us via email both before and after our holiday. Booked as a base for walking in the lake district and it was lovely to come back to a warm cottage with beautiful views. Covid measures in place and good communication with the owner. Would definitely return and recommend to family and friends.

Our second time in this beautiful cosy and comfortable cottage and already planning a 3rd visit.

Stag cottage is immaculately presented and has everything you could possibly need for a relaxing break whatever the weather . New sofa/ soft furnishings since our last visit and some nice new garden furniture which made our morning coffee even more enjoyable when sitting enjoying the stunning views. Quite remarkable given the stormy weather when we arrived but the sun shone for the latter part of our week meaning we could make the most of the beautiful location. It was nice to receive a text from the owner checking all was OK and we appreciated the small supply of goods left for our arrival. The attention to detail is 1st rate and it really is as good as it looks in the photos and spotlessly clean. We sampled the food at the 2 pubs nearby and can recommend both for quality of food and excellent customer service. We were made to feel very welcome on a busy Sunday lunch at the Boot and Shoe Inn and in the evening at the Herdwick. We hope to return in 2021.

Stag cottage was even better than we expected!

It was absolutely spotless, warm and with fresh clean towels and bed sheets! The beds were so comfortable I could have spent the whole holiday tucked up in bed! There was a cot available and a high chair, dishwasher, washing machine, dryer, microwave, coffee machine.. and the gorgeous log burning fire was lovely in the storm! There was a welcome pack explaining how everything works and a whole drawer full of leaflets - organised into different categories! Board games, blankets, everything! And she had even left us a pint of milk for a nice cuppa! There was even an emergency power cut pack! I had an enquiry and messaged the owner, she replied to me very swiftly and was very helpful and friendly! The views from the cottage are beautiful and the location is ideal, just minutes away from penrith (with morrisons and aldi) and just a short drive to keswick. We were so impressed, we would 100% recommend this cottage and would be more than happy returning!

We had a fantastic time at Stag Cottage despite landing in the middle of Storm Dennis.

Helen, her Mum & Alan the caretaker were so helpful to us & went out of their way to make sure we had everything we needed. The cottage is so cosy & done out to a really high standard with everything you could need. The area is stunning, so close to the Lakes and the mountain views give a sense of peace & tranquility. If only life was like that more often!

Lovely cottage with all you could possibly want or need.

Loved the quirky little touches such as the typewriter and the snooker scorer for keys! Very considerate that milk, tea, coffee, biscuits etc are there on arrival. Beds extremely comfortable, linen and towels clean and fresh. Lovely owner who got in touch to check all OK. Highly recommended

The view was lovely and even included horses, sheep and donkeys, with dusting of snow on top of fells.

Recommend the large fish and chips at local Herdwick Inn.

Stag cottage met all of our expectations and more.

As a holiday cottage it is so well equipped and all the little extras - like herbs and spices in the kitchen or the wood and newspaper provided to go with the wood burner - make you feel instantly at home in this thoughtfully furnished cottage. We were four adults staying in the cottage for a weekend away and all of us commented that we would definitely stay in Stage Cottage again.

Stag Cottage was so lovely!

The view from the back of the property is beautiful with pretty much uninterrupted views of the far away hills and mountains. There was everything we could have needed in the cottage and the kitchen was very well equipped. Motherby is an ideal spot to stay as it's easy to access the rest of the lake district and the nearest lake Ullswater is outstandingly beautiful. In summer the garden would be perfect to sit and and soak in the view on the lovely furniture, but it was a little chilly when we visited. We enjoyed having a fire in the stove on the one really rainy day we were there, it felt very cosy. We would definitely return to Stag cottage if we were to visit the beautiful lakes again.

This cottage absolutely ticked every box for us.

The space was amazing, the decor tasteful and beautiful, the bed super comfy and the view was incredible. This owner has thought of everything. The kitchen area is very well equipped with lots of little touches like lots of herbs and spices, olive oil, peppercorns etc. There were plenty of dishes, utensils, cutlery and having a dishwasher, small freezer and washing machine was excellent. The fact that there was a downstairs toilet/wet room was a boon. It’s in a small hamlet but close enough to all of the important areas to visit. The Herdwick Inn serves lovely food but as it is very popular, we suggest booking before you eat there. Greystoke, just down the road has another nice inn to eat in, The Boot&Shoe. It also has an open air, heated swimming pool run by the community which opens from May to September. We loved sitting outside on the small patio, having a coffee and enjoying the view. This was our first visit to Stag Cottage but it certainly won’t be our last. Thanks to Sykes for yet again facilitating our stay in a top notch property.

Lovely cottage but perhaps one sofa needs to be replaced as uncomfortable.

Second bedroom very small as twin beds took up most of room and had to squeeze to get clothes in and out of wardrobe. Otherwise really felt at home. Beautiful views and very quiet and peaceful. Ideal base for touring the whole district.

The location of the cottage was exactly what we wanted.

Although it was about forty minutes drive to the heart of the Lake District we didn't mind because we were out of the touristy area. Ullswater and Derwentwater were very close and are two of the most attractive and peaceful lakes. We could also visit Carlisle, shop in Penrith or Keswick and day trips to the Yorkshire Dales and Hadrian' s Wall are also possible from the cottage. The cottage itself overlooks farmland and there is very little traffic so a good night's sleep is assured. It is exceptionally well equipped and warm and cosy.

So well equipped comfortable and loved the location. Great views nice local pubs too. Owner was responsive and helpful. Woyld definitely recommend and consider staying there again.

The cottage was exactly as described and lovely and cosy in a peaceful location despite being situated right up to the road. The whole booking process through Sykes cottages was smooth and efficient including the directions to the property to the enth degree. We were very grateful for the entrance description including reference to the ivy clad wall as we could so easily have missed it otherwise! Thankyou for a wonderful stay in an idyllic property.

After we worked out how to turn up the thermostat for the heating it was a perfect cottage for our stay.

Really lovely touches to the place, beautifully decorated and very comfy cosy beds. Great place for the week.

Stag Cottage is a lovely comfortable house in a small hamlet but handy for going to visit either the lake district, travelling on the M6 or further East towards the Yorkshire Dales.

The nearby inns serve excellent meals if you don't want to cook.

Fantastic views from the cottage and every comfort needed.

Lots to do within easy reach, Penrith and Keswick very handy distance. Can't recommend enough!

We enjoyed our stay here.

It was a good location to be able to explore the area. We walked and cycled lots, saw lots of animals, foraged for wild fruit and rested in between. There is a great local outdoor swimming pool and a wonderful cycle cafe in Greystokes. The cottage had everything we needed.

The views are stunning! The two showers worked perfectly. The second bedroom would have more room with a double bed, as quite small for 2 adults, but can understand why 2 singles installed. We will be booking again for 2019

Stag Cottage is a delight.

We spent a wonderful weekend exploring Keswick and the northern Lakes with our Canadian friends who were very impressed by our choice of cottage. It is spotlessly clean, well equipped, the beds are very comfortable, there are good pubs nearby serving good food, and it is tucked away in a peaceful spot with lovely views over fields and fells, horses munching, birds singing - what more could you want?

A Welcome Pack would have been appreciated.
