  • "This was a fantastic holiday stay for 8 of us family, with plenty of space and bedrooms to boot."

The house is beautiful, immaculately presented and above all - clean. The owner kindly called me on arrival to make sure everything was ok and working, which was a thoughtful touch. The location was perfect for us too, with incredible views!

  • "We had a lovely stay in Hilltop House in September."

It was a perfect location for three generations of our family to get together for a long weekend. Although there were 12 of us the house still felt as though there was lots of space and the hot tub was an added bonus. We cooked on two of the nights and found everything we needed and had a lovely Sunday roast at the local pub. I would definitely recommend the cottage to friends and would stay again.

  • "This is an amazing property in an absolutely beautiful setting."

It was perfect for our family gathering with lots of space for everyone both inside and out. We particularly loved the big kitchen with an Aga, large table and everything you could possibly need. The only thing that could have been better was the weather but we still managed to have some time outside having a barbecue or a glass of fizz in the hot tub. The new decking area and furniture is fabulous and you cannot beat sitting there looking out at the spectacular scenery surrounding the property. All in all amazing and would love to return, Claire McNab & Family

  • "Wow!! This was absolutely the perfect location for our international family reunion for Xmas 2022 after 3 long years of Covid"

. The house is spectacular, warm and welcoming - a 17thC house, tastefully furnished. There was plenty of space for us all to spread out - including a 2 bed annexe. Beds were very comfortable. And it was spotlessly clean. The hot tub was a real hit - especially in the snow. We did lots of walks from the house - there are lovely pubs in both directions up and down the dale and a lovely pub in the village only 2 mins walk from the house. Communication was excellent. Thank you - we will hopefully be back to stay on our next visit.

The dishwasher has since been replaced and the stocks (bin liners, dishwashing products and others) all topped up. Hopefully all spick and span again! Property Owner

  • "Beautiful home and place to stay."

Had everything we could have wished for during our break, so comfortable, especially the beds, the hot tub was the icing on the cake. Although there was 11 of us there was plenty of space to enjoy and never felt you were on top of each other. Surroundings/location were idyllic, lovely village and couldn't believe how quiet it was in the garden. Not a criticism, but another shower in the main house would be beneficial, even it was just a shower spray on the downstairs bath. We all had a great time and hope to return again in the future.

  • "This is a beautiful cottage for a large family."

It is in a small village within a short driving distance to local towns and villages. It is well equipped with all household items and plenty kindling for the fires. I went with a family if 11, the house never felt crowded there was loads of space for us all to play board games together in one room and lots if smaller rooms if you wanted some quiet time to watch TV etc. There is a village pub that was very accommodating as we were celebrating a 40th wedding anniversary and went there for dinner. The staff were fantastic in accommodating us. I would love to visit this village and stay in this cottage again.

  • "Lovely place to stay."

Owners undersell its better points like the enclosed garden etc ideal for families. Hot tub. Well kitted out. Only drawbacks were worn and none too clean looking carpets and the small bed coverings for the annexe double. Our room was magnificent and the children all managed the stairs well. Something for everyone.. if you were to cook a large meal for twelve, you would be somewhat constrained by the number of rings and ovens but that said, an Aga is idea for a cottage in a walking area. Friendly villagers and pub, never got to try pizzeria. Next year?

  • "We were caught out by how wintry and hilly the drive was from Scotland."

I realise this is our own fault for not planning better, but it may be useful information to pass on to future winter guests coming from the north. It is possible to avoid high level, single track roads by going via Skipton, but on our way there using the most direct route, we had the combination of snow, ice and fog making the drive quite treacherous.

  • "What a beautiful cottage!"

I booked this lovely home for 12 of my family, including two children, for 1 week in December. It was impeccably clean and the beds were the comfiest we have ever slept on! The living room was very cosy and we kept the log fire going all week. The host was kind enough to decorate the house with Christmas trees which we appreciated and the hot tub was clean and warm for our arrival! The location was great for walking and wildlife. The only thing that would improve this house would be putting the larger television in the larger living room, with more sofas/armchairs to accommodate all 12 guests. Otherwise a perfect stay and would definitely recommend! 5 stars!

  • "Hilltop House is an amazing place."

The internet pictures don't do it justice at all. It exceeded our expectations and we had the most amazing time. With three generations sharing the house for a retirement get together it couldn't have been better. Excellently equipped and stylishly furnished. Super comfy beds, hot tub , gorgeous gardens ( kids loved the rope swing) views from virtually every window. I could go on and on ! House keeper was very helpful and the owners attentive and informative throughout and went the extra mile. The pub in Starbotton operates very part time but a gentle ( and very pleasant) walk down the river to Kettlewell takes you to several pubs all of which were very welcoming. Would we come back ? ..... without a doubt, and very likely will one day . If you want a celebratory dinner,as we did, but don't want to cook, speak to Duncan at White Rose Catering. We renewed an old business friendship with him and he cooked us a wonderful meal at the house, truly special. Don't hesitate to book this gorgeous place, you wont be disappointed.

The property

An outstanding Grade II listed detached country home set in its own grounds on the outskirts of the village of Starbotton, one of the real gems of the Yorkshire Dales National Park.

This former farmhouse is set within fifteen acres of gardens and grazing land and provides stunning holiday accommodation in this beautiful area.

Over the years it has changed from a humble farmhouse to an elegant family home with several early Georgian additions.

Various colourful characters have occupied Hilltop over the years, including a well known Huddersfield businessman who collected over 140 paintings, many of which featured Hilltop and the surrounding area, and were affectionately known as the Roebuck Collection.

From the moment guests enter, they will be enchanted by the character and charm of the place, with the old date stone 1610, exposed stoneworks, old beams, listed meat safe situated in the ceiling, tiled harlequin floors, mullioned windows, parquet floor and much more.

The house features a fabulous kitchen with superb inglenook fireplace incorporating an AGA, together with hand-built units and oak and granite worktops.

There is a spacious dining room with woodburning stove, piano and recessed window seat to take advantage of the lovely views of the front garden.

On either side of the dining room are the sitting room, again featuring a beautiful inglenook fireplace with an open fire and the original drawing room which has a large screen TV, an ideal room for relaxing.

A useful cloakroom and a small music/library, ideal for a quiet reflective glass of wine, complete the ground floor.

Upstairs are four stylish bedrooms, including one with an en-suite shower, with three other bedrooms providing spacious and flexible sleeping arrangements and all but one boasting fabulous views.

Outside, in the annexe, there are a further two bedrooms, one with an en-suite shower and one with a kitchenette having the added benefit of being on the ground floor with fabulous views across the gardens and up onto the fell.

Relax and enjoy the delightful walled cottage garden with herbs and mature flower beds overlooking the attached paddock; or sit back and relax in the superb hot tub where you can enjoy magnificent views of the Dales countryside.

There are numerous footpaths, circular walks and the River Wharfe on the doorstep of this luxurious cottage, plus close by are Buckden, Malham, Kettlewell, Grassington and Skipton.

This excellent cottage offers a truly memorable holiday for anyone lucky enough to spend time in this beautiful location.

Note: This property has a Good Housekeeping bond of £200.

About the location

STARBOTTON

Kettlewell & Buckden 2 miles; Grassington 12 miles.

Nestling in the Upper Wharfedale Valley between Kettlewell and Buckden, this idyllic National Park village makes the perfect place from which to explore the wonderful scenery and pretty villages of this magnificent Dale. Much of Upper Wharfedale is National Trust owned - an indication of the beauty of its classic countryside, with dry-stone walls and barns, important flower-rich hay meadows and valleyside woodland. Undoubtedly, this is one of the best walking areas in the Dales, with The Dales Way passing nearby, good access to Buckden Pike and gentle walks along the riverbanks. The village itself comprises a cluster of stone-built cottages and houses with, at its centre, the wonderful 'Fox and Hounds' pub serving great ales and fine food. No surprise that the hit movie 'Calendar Girls' was filmed nearby and in other locations throughout the area. An excellent base for enjoying the famous dales, historic market towns, caves and waterfalls of this magical area.
