Arch Cottage

The Arch Cottage is well placed in Lincoln, and everything is close to hand.

I picked this property as my wife, and I have lived in Lincoln previously and still have family based there. Accommodation was a big space to accommodate the 7 of us comfortably. We all had a room and as said the space is good and gives a cottage feel, I have the bumps on my head to prove that….haha. There was a pleasant surprise with some goodies in the fridge, milk was good as a cuppa was well needed. But I’m afraid that is where it ends. The accommodation whilst it has that cottage feel it does seem a little tired in places. Carpets are worn and stained. The place seems like it is stuck in the 80’s along with the cooker and lights switches throughout. The window above the gas cooker was covered in greasy as we went to open it, not a pleasant experience when we tried to open it. Whilst we appreciate the age of the house and accept the spiders there are a lot of cobwebs both inside on the widows and outside. The ones outside are a given but not inside and especially as the day before (checking the guest book) there were other guests so there should not have been any excuses for a clean-up. The weather was good so we thought we would sit outside only to find the garden furniture dirty, falling apart and the garden was unkept, not good. We did leave a couple of notes for fixes one being the kitchen smoke alarm not working correctly, upstairs bathroom toilet seat broken and not fixed correctly which would indicate the cleaner had not picked that up during the cleaning the day before. We didn’t light the gas fire as there seems to be a leak on it with black soot and several cracks on the surround. We placed the rubbish out that was landfill in the bin provided but there was not one for the green was so we placed it bags next to it but up the side was very messy. I would have expected a better service considering the amount of money spent on the stay. It was supposed to be a big celebration, and it took the edge off it slightly. Considering this was booked a while ago and the exceptions of it fell slightly short.

Booked Arch Cottage for a few days for our daughter's graduation.

Perfect location for the castle and Cathedral. Superb cottage with so much history. Had everything and more that we required for our stay and the items in the fridge were a nice surprise. The Owners were lovely and responded very quickly to our communications. Very close to restaurant's and bars and no need to walk up Steep Hill, which was nice as we normally stay down by the marina. Loved reading about the cottage's history in the cottage's folder. Would definitely stay again.

Arch Cottage is full of old-world charm, in a magical spot within Lincoln's Bailgate. We booked this cottage for a family gathering and we'll be booking again. The kids (aged 6-15) got stuck into the games drawer and just chilled and hung out, and everyone got together around the large kitchen table at meal times, and to chat. We cooked quite a bit in the kitchen which was very well equipped and even had washing up liquid and a sponge. (It would have been good to know this as we packed some just incase, but very much appreciated). The location of this cottage is second to none - it's built into Newport Arch and had great views of the Bailgate from 2 of the bedrooms. A little out of the way of the buzz of the highstreet but a 5 minute walk to the cathedral and 2 minute walk to the shops. This cottage would be idyllic at Christmas - we would love to return again at some point. Highly recommended!

We arrived at the cottage and were delighted to find a lovely message on the chalk board welcoming us.

The fridge had welcome goodies which were delicious and gratefully received. The kitchen had everything we could possibly need, washing up liquid, dishwashing tablets, cloths and dish cloths. There was even a coffee grinder with coffee beans. Also, lots of cutlery and kitchen utensils if you wanted to cook. There was a slight fusty smell in the cottage but it’s a very old building and it’s to be expected. All the beds were comfortable and towels were clean and plentiful. The cottage is very central and was near the cathedral and the castle which was our main priority. We felt as a group the garden area could have been better maintained for our stay. The grass hadn’t been cut and the garden furniture very tired and with green mould on. We spent a lot of time in the garden because the weather was so hot, but obviously it didn’t spoil our stay and would definitely book again.

It’s truly a home away from home. We love the location, the well stocked kitchen, the uniqueness and history of the cottage. This is our second time staying there. We will definitely be back. Thank you for sharing this beautiful home with us.

Lovely cottage in quiet top end of the city , but easy walk into the old area and then down to waterside and major shopping centre - good walk back up steep hill !

Very comfortable and homely . Fantastic welcome treats in the fridge (best ever received). Cleanliness of the property could be better , but bathrooms and toilets spotless . Would definitely recommend .

We have stayed in many Sykes Cottages but this was the first one that provided dishwasher tablets and washing powder and an adequate supply of toilet rolls and even spare light bulbs.

They also provided a wonderful supply of local food. The cottage was warm and cosy and in the perfect location, being in a quiet area bur very close to the castle and cathedral and transport.

Arch Cottage is brimming with character and is in an amazing location.

We loved being able to walk to the cathedral and castle within 5 minutes but it still felt quiet and peaceful in the house. We ranged in age from 16 to 83 and we could easily do things together and separately. The kitchen was the heart of the house, with a lovely big table to seat all of us. The weather was cold but the house warmed up well. We enjoyed the fire in the sitting room and playing games around the dining room table. The welcome pack was great - especially the pork pies! It was also easy to communicate with the owner. We had a great time, thank you!

This is a lovely property which is bigger than it looks and was really comfortable.

The house was very clean and welcoming; even decorated for Christmas and with some welcome goodies in the fridge - thank you. The owners were really helpful with pre holiday queries and there was lots of information about Arch Cottage's history in the information pack. There was lots of space and it was nice and warm with good wifi connectivity. The kitchen was fully equipped with everything you need (including a slow cooker) and there were some welcome goodies in the fridge. Arch Cottage is an excellent location with just enough space for a large car. All in all a lovely place to stay.

Short walk to all the sites in Lincoln. One of the best homes we have ever stayed in.

Everything about Arch Cottage is excellent - location, layout, facilities, local info .

.. Only minor suggestion - the 'welcome pack' in the fridge (milk, butter, orange juice, plum bread etc!) was gratefully received. It would have been helpful to know in advance that these supplies would be there as we brought similar with us.

The house itself is lovely, set in the arch wall.

Everything was great and the food provided was both practical and delicious. The location is wonderful. So close to the cathedral and castle. And Lincoln has much to offer. Highly recommended indeed.

Had a lovely stay at Arch Cottage.

The cottage was very impressive with a well appointed kitchen and was well placed for all Lincoln's main attractions. We very much appreciated the pork pie & plum bread. An excellent place to stay.

Arch cottage was a very comfortable and homely place for my family to gather and spend time together after travelling from Australia for a family wedding.

There was plenty of space for people to be together and apart, it was warm and welcoming with great facilities to share meals and a few drinks… would love to come back and stay here again.

We loved Arch Cottage, such a lovely, cosy feel to the place and in a great location for walking into Lincoln and seeing the sights.

The cottage also came with parking for two cars, a real find in a busy location. Plenty of space in the cottage for us to chill and catch up and not feel on top of each other. We were left a lovely welcome pack, filled with local delicacies. There was lots of information left about places to visit and recommended restaurants. We all really enjoyed our stay at Arch Cottage, it was a shame the Christmas Market had been cancelled, but we managed to get booked into Christmas wreath making in the cathedral.

A fantastic location - we know Lincoln really well - and picked it for the location - and it did not disappoint.

The place was perfect for us for a big family anniversary. The welcome was wonderful - thank you for the goodies in the fridge we really appreciated it.

Such a refreshing change from many homes that are no more than a commercial venture. Plenty of character, well furnished, nicely prepared, easy access and a surprise welcome pack in the fridge to get you going. We didn't have time to visit all the great places due to a 90th birthday celebration but managed to squeeze in the cathedral and a whistle stop castle visit, which was fine as it was only at the end of the road. Having a pub over the road allowed us to tag in and out on baby sitting duties for one of the evenings and the 3 year old was fascinated that her bed was over the pathway tunnel. The local history is fascinating and we felt privileged to be allowed to stay in a building with such a connection to that old history (and had fun working out the changes that had happened over the years) We genuinely hope to have reason to visit Lincoln and stay here again.

We really enjoyed our short stay and the property was excellently located for the visits we had planned.

The welcome pack was unexpected and gratefully received. We did feel parts of the property could do with a little tlc and the background heating updated. We couldn't find a bin for recycling despite the instructions. It did'nt spoil our stay though and we would definitely consider visiting again. Elaine

Home yesterday after a lovely long weekend in Arch Cottage.

The cottage is located in wonderful position. Right at the top of Lincoln hill near the cathedral and you just come out of the garden gate straight into the old street. The owner couldn’t look after you better providing two bottles of orange juice (with bits and without bits), Lincoln fruit bread with butter, flapjacks biscuits, a large pork pie and milk. Very well stocked with dishwasher tablets, washing up liquid and cloth/sponge a tea towel. We took things that we usually need on rented holiday home and didn’t need any of it. Loads of loo rolls as well. We will definitely be back for a lovely family get together. Very much recommend.

A lovely antique cottage in the heart of Lincoln with loads of pubs and restaurants on your door step.

We had a wonderful holiday in this charactor home which is attached to a Roman 3rd century stone arch and has the remains of the wall in the garden. In summary a large comfortable house in a good historical location with lots to do close by, would highly recommend.

The location was ideal for our needs and we felt very welcome at the cottage. It’s a wonderful property with lots of character & charm. Our only complaint is that we had to leave and go back home!

What a gorgeous cottage.

Built in 1350 into the Roman arch at the entrance to Lincoln, it is steeped in history but has all modern comforts. It is located just a few steps away from the Cathedral and Castle, and plenty of pubs and restaurants and interesting shops. A great base for visiting nearby castles and stately homes - Burghley; Gainsborough Old Hall; Doddington; Grimsthorpe; Woolsthorpe (Isaac Newton's home); and Tattersley Castle. Lincoln is a delightful city and the cottage is perfect.

Perfect location for exploring Lincoln’s history, garden was a bonus in the lovely warm few days we had.

Showers were temperamental and water wouldn’t stay in the Bath so maybe plug doesn’t fit. Very well equipped kitchen but some chipped plates and cups. Neither stopped us having a fabulous stay.

A lovely comfortable house with all the facilities we needed.

My family enjoyed a lovely weekend at Arch Cottage. The property owner was very helpful and quick to reply to messages. The additional parking space is very close by and convenient. The welcome pack was also lovely.

Very homely inside and all necessary amenities. Loved the folder with the history of the cottage. Also loved all the old photos of the cottage. It is clearly well loved and the history has been considered. Lovely welcome note for the party which was a nice touch. Very warm and cosy and didn’t get cold. Instructions for arriving, parking, entry and leaving the property were all carefully given.

It's roomy for seven of us, comfortable and spotlessly clean. The welcome pack is exceptional and the pork pie is something we were looking forward to after our first visit. One tiny point non-slip mats are needed for both showers. We hope to come again in the future.

Lovely cottage in a very good location!

Very old house but well furnished and equipped, very clean for us on arrival. Wonderful welcome pack and warm message on the board. Would have liked comfier beds but that was our only slight niggle and wouldn’t stop us booking again. Parking for 1 car on the space out front and although the chapel parking was busy on arrival managed to find a spot eventually and it’s very close. All in all a great stay.

We had a great weekend in this cottage.

The welcome package was a surprise and very much appreciated after the 5 of us had dragged our cases up the hill in the rain. It was very hard work but we did it!! We were very comfortable, the heating came on automatically so it was nice and warm downstairs on a morning. The cottage has everything you might need. I can't fault anything. The location is excellent for the city, you couldn't get any closer. It's lovely and quiet though. We all loved it. Thank you!

Fantastic cottage, location perfect, 7 ladies having a much needed weekend away, we were not disappointed, we will definitely return, the cottage was very well stocked and loved the ‘gifts’ that were left, loved the fact that there was an abundance of toilet rolls where usually you just get a couple of rolls xx love love love it

We feel comfortable there and very much at home. It is well-equipped and we had everything we needed. The position is perfect for visiting the Cathedral, Castle, museum etc. It is also near delightful restaurants. We hope to return soon.

The owner was super accommodating and friendly when it came to sorting a new car pass. Huge accommodation and supper comfortable especially in the middle of the historic part of Lincoln. We couldn't have asked for better. Thank you again and we hope to be back next year!

My parents, who live close by, rented Arch Cottage for a couple of nights for my sister, her family and myself to stay.

It was an amazing place for our large family to meet up and enjoy making some special memories together. The space and layout were perfect and meant everyone had space and were comfortable. Having taken the 7.5 hour journey from South Devon the bedrooms were so cosy and welcoming after a day filled with laughs. Facilities were fab and meant I could rustle up some lovey food for us all and the supplies in the fridge were really kind. (the plum bread particularly delicious) Already planning our next trip. If you are looking for a home from home with a large group, allowing lots of space, then Arch Cottage is ideal. Bailgate is a beautiful place and a great base for exploring.

We had the pleasure of staying in Arch Cottage for a weekend break on 25th June.

We were a group of 7. The purpose of our stay was a group reunion of old friends who went to school together in Lincoln. The cottage is in a beautiful location in historic Lincoln in the Cathedral quarter. It is extremely well facilitated with a well stocked kitchen and beautiful, comfortable furnishings throughout. It was spotlessly clean with comfortable beds. It was a hot weekend and the garden was a delightful bonus. The welcome pack was a welcoming touch. Arch cottage made our reunion even more special!

We had a wonderful Christmas time in Arch Cottage.

The location is amazing and so convenient for seeing the shops and Cathedral. The welcoming pack was very generous - thank you so much! The Cottage is spacious and the kitchen had everything we needed. Many reviews seem to mention the narrowness of the double beds and I would agree. I slept in the single and my husband in the double in our room, so some king-size beds would be a great addition to what is a really lovely cottage.

Arch cottage is wonderful, it’s so spacious and the location is amazing.

It was very well equipped, beautifully clean, beds where very comfy, showers where nice and hot and plenty of hot water for 8 ladies. Our only gripe is the two front bedrooms are cold, there is only one portable heater, we really needed one in each room. Also we where there for Lincoln market weekend and couldn’t park outside the property as the roads are barricaded off and the security staff could not let us through, however they where amazing, they helped us unload our two cars and took it to the cottage and the same when we left. We had to park our cars on a nearby sports ground. There is a permit in the cottage for 1 veh to park in nearby car park but didn’t see it until after. None of the above spoilt our weekend though and would definitely return to this lovely cottage. The fridge had some lovely goodies left for us by the owner which was a lovely touch and very much appreciated. Thank you

What a lovely cottage!

Comfortable, warm, roomy, spotlessly clean and well equipped it was the perfect place for seven of us to enjoy a family weekend. The welcome package was a nice surprise and the pork pies were sublime. Arch Cottage will be our first choice when we next visit Lincoln.

The cottage was clean and warm and the food items in the fridge were very welcome and enjoyed by all. The car parking facility ensured that we did'nt have to worry or use our vehicles during our stay as the cottage location to old Lincoln was ideal.

The cottage is a fascinating and historical building in a unique location.

The interior is decorated, furnished and equipped in a manner that takes account of its historical nature, but also takes account of modern needs for comfort and activities. The interior is adorned with period artefacts. On the other hand the technology and facilities, from WiFi and TV to kitchen and bathrooms are right up-to-date. The location is ideal for walking exploration of Lincoln city, a beautiful and fascinating place. A round trip on the city tour bus is a good idea early on in your stay. From this you can plan and prioritise more leisurely sight seeing. The parking mentioned in another feedback is most convenient and we had no problem in safely using it for our VW Golf. It might be a bit tight for a very big car, but a nearby alternative is also available. Altogether, a splendid holiday.

Beautiful characterful cosy cottage in perfect location to walk to the town and cathedral.

We spent 3 nights on a girls wknd making the most of chilling in the cottage and relaxing in the garden. The history of the cottage was so interesting. We felt like we’d gone back in time. All home comforts were thought of and a very generous welcome pack was left for us to share. Being able to walk to the shops cafes cathedral and castle was just ideal. The walk up the hill from the station was a challenge but we were up for that. The additional parking was ideal. We hope to return next year for another girls wknd. There’s still so much to see. Only a few minor things were needed but hardly worth mentioning. An ice cube tray. Some sharper knives and a CD player. Thanks again for a memorable stay.

It was a great privilege to be there and take in the ambiance of it all. It was home from home in terms of provisions within the cottage.....I would have packed so much less. I would recommend it to anyone who is looking for the real deal of old lincolnshire. Patsy x

Handy for the sites of Lincoln. Quirky cottage in the arch - loved it. Very comfortable stay. Thanks for the welcome pack - tasty!! Only suggestion would be to have cleaning materials in each of the bathrooms since all be shared with others.

Such a wonderful place to stay and more “liveable” than most in terms of kitchen equipment etc.

It was great not to have to nip out for loo roll, for example. The host was responsive and very helpful, and the location was ideal.

We were so pleased with this cottage, it was so cosy and had everything you needed and more.

A nice touch were the goodies that were left in the Fridge for us. Wouldn't hesitate to to recommend this cottage. Ideal for all ages. We were just there for the weekend visiting the Christmas Market, but I would love to return when it is warmer as it has a lovely garden with barbecue etc.

Lovely cottage and fantastic location.

We had a small/average sized car so were able to park in the cottage space; not sure anybody with a bigger car could although it was great to have a visitor space booked in the nearby church car park. There were a few minor diy things that need sorting and we left a note for the owner e.g. wobbly table leg on nest of tables, radiator in one bedroom seemingly not working and a drip from a pipe in one of the bathrooms that didn't seem to be harming anything but may have contributed to why the shower changed temperature whilst using. We had a fabulous week and the cottage does have a truly lovely ambience.

A great stay in a superbly located spot.

A deceptively big property. Saw the reviews others have said about the beds not being as big as they could be and completely agree - there is plenty of space in three of the bedrooms for bigger beds so that was a shame. The welcome gifts in the fridge were a nice touch but a slightly eclectic mix with the milk being best before the day we arrived. The shower room would benefit from an extractor. Apart from that and to end on a positive note it was a very comfortable two night stay and would certainly recommend it.

We stayed as a couple with another couple for our son's 2020 law graduation (a year late!

) and had a great time. The house is perfectly positioned for the Cathedral and the Castle and Lincoln is absolutely beautiful. It was very well equipped, we chose a 3+ bedroomed house our son joined us for two days. There is a lovely garden with three seating areas, very private but great for watching the world go by too! If I had to make any criticism it would be the beds. There are four doubles and one single. The doubles are just too small for a couple, ok I know they are designed for a couple but having a super king at home and most people, I guess, having a king size they are just too small! There is room for a king size in three of the rooms. Otherwise it is a lovely and we all had a fantastic time.
