Colintraive is located on the west coast of the Cowal peninsula, facing the Kyles of Bute. It is rather a small village mainly comprising of the hotel with pub and restaurant and its small adjoining post office. The nearest neighbouring village is Glendaruel which is another quaint location, home to Kilmodan Church, Glendaruel Bridge and the ruined Dunans Castle. Glendaruel Wood and Crags and the Ruel Estuary are both included in the 'List of Sites of Special Scientific Interest in Mid Argyll and Cowal', so definitely worth a visit while in the area. The nearest town of notable size is Dunoon, which rests along the east coast of the peninsula, facing Gourock and the Firth of Clyde. Dunoon is the maritime gateway to the Loch Lomond & Trossachs National Park, it is built around the historic Castle Mound and is famous for its large Victorian pier. Boasting a selection of cafes, shops and galleries to browse along the high street and the promenade is also a delightful walkway for a stroll. A fascinating place to discover the local history is at the Castle House Museum and the leisure centre is another popular attraction among the locals and tourists.
