  • "A lovely cottage in a beautiful setting with a great enclosed garden, perfect for dogs."

The cottage was warm and welcoming when we arrived on a chilly afternoon. Comfortable sitting room and bedrooms, excellent bed. Plenty of logs for the wood burning stove. It has been so wet this winter that I asked whether it would be possible to have a hosepipe on the outdoor tap to wash the dog before he went indoors and Jason kindly organised this - it was very useful given the mud! The porch and tiled floors allowed us to dry ourselves and dogs before going into the living room. Such a good arrangement. A couple of minor points. A poker would be useful, and some pot lids! They were all missing. We loved the cottage and it is in a brilliant place to go walking, both straight from the garden gate and to beautiful walks quite nearby, like Bury Ditches, Long Mynd etc. The White Horse at Clun does great food too.

We escaped the loud fireworks in the Black Country on New Years Eve which start at 8 and continue past midnight. Couldn’t hear a pin drop. Real Christmas tree in the living room, beautiful cottage and wood burner, massive secure garden for our 2 boisterous Vizslas who loved their stay. Owners fab, answered questions about walks ASAP. Public footpath walk to Clun by the river 2 mins away, note: lots of stiles if you have big dogs who won’t jump them. White Horse at Clun do fab food to take away, and don’t forget Caratacus the amazing gift shop next door to the White Horse, great little finds!

Easy to find and super comfy beds. Great to have the enclosed garden for the dogs. Would have been nice to have dog bowls for the dogs and maybe a little starter pack for when we arrived with washing up liquid/oil etc. in, but was lovely to see the Christmas tree up. It gave a warm and cosy feel. Will definitely be back!

Thankyou for your review. I am surprised you have mentioned about the basics not being in there as the cottage is supplied with Tea, Coffee, Sugar, washing up liquid, basic cleaning supplies, bin bags, and toilet roll and all of this was in there for your stay. We do not provide any cooking ingredients such as oil as it is a self catering cottage. Property Owner

  • "The photos of the property don’t do it justice."

The sofas are comfortable and the living room extremely cosy particularly with the fire roaring. Although we brought our own wood there was plenty available in the outhouse. The property is spotlessly clean with plenty of kitchenware and utensils (although the knives could do with a sharpen lol). The owners responded to a minor issue we had promptly which we appreciated. The only negative is the walks from the doorstep have no footpaths and the roads very narrow so difficult to walk with dogs. If you’re happy to drive out this isn’t a problem. Overall though a very chilled, relaxing and quiet break. Would absolutely recommend.

Thankyou for your review & glad that you enjoyed your stay. Sorry that you struggled with the footpaths, there are miles of footpaths just across the lane from the cottage, which are all of road. If you decide to come back for another stay we will be more than happy to direct you in the right direction. Property Owner

On the cottage details it states electric central heating but it's now heated by a new oil fired heating system, which was a nice surprise. The details on the Sykes website require updating. Other than that everything about the property was really good. Regarding the area it's great for dog walking and only about a 30 min walk to Clun, (Shop's and Pubs) , via the Shropshire way path.

Thankyou for your review. The Oil heating has only just been fitted, so we are in the process of updating Sykes website, and refreshing the pictures for the cottage. Property Owner

  • "The garden is splendid for dogs, large and fully enclosed."

The cottage was spotless with not a speck of dust anywhere. The cottage is small and old but the space has been used well, the kitchen/dining area is compact which the photos give the illusion of being bigger. The lounge has comfortable furniture, and a lovely fireplace, there is a useful baby gate at the bottom of the stairs as these lead directly into the bedroom (no door) The downstairs bathroom is spacious, the shower temperature is difficult to control, perhaps due to water pressure. Disappointing that the only views to the garden are from the extension at the rear, lounge, kitchen and bedrooms only have the road view. The arrival time of 5pm which I thought was set by the agents, apparently this is set by the owner, she would not allow an earlier arrival, even though departure is 9am. The owners live in the farm across the way they never came across to welcome or introduce themselves which surprised us.

The check in and departure times are clearly stated on Sykes website when booking the cottage. I have a number of holiday cottages to change over on a Friday , and like them all to be cleaned to a high standard so surely a slightly later check in time is worth it for a clean cottage. One thing, only, that could be improved is the lounge carpet could do with a clean. It's great that the owners welcome dogs. Dogs are notoriously mucky which can make carpets a nightmare to keep clean and I sympathise with the issue the owners have. But, all in all, a lovely cottage.

About the location

CLUN

Bishop's Castle 6 miles; Ludlow 18 miles.

A.E. Houseman's poem, A Shropshire Lad, defined Clun as 'the quietest place under the sun', and with its dramatic ruin of a Norman castle, Saxon church, the bustling river which flows under the 14th century pack horse bridge, and a country inn, Clun is a rural gem situated in the South Shropshire Hills. It lies on the Shropshire Way in a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty close to the border of Wales, an area known as The Marches. This unspoilt part of Britain has an abundance of wildlife and beautiful unhindered walking and cycling routes winding their way through the countryside with the Clun and Kerry Forests, Offa's Dyke, and Kerry Ridgeway all close by. There are a wide range of festivals and shows on offer in the surrounding area throughout the year, including The Green Man festival in May. From Clun, you can also enjoy exploring the historic towns of Bishop's Castle, Presteigne, Ludlow, Shrewsbury, and Hereford, a must for visitors.
