I would recommend it to any able bodied couple or family. Unfortunately Sykes Cottages lets third parties advertise and we used Hotels.com and found this lovely property. We read the details and were led to believe there was on site parking as it stated. Unfortunately the correct access details and location were not used on Hotel.coms description. When the booking came through as a Sykes Cottage property we were very pleased. Only when we arrived did we find that the property was at a distance from a road. Access was along a rough uneven path infront of a terrace of 5 houses and through 2 gates. There was no parking, you could unload at the end of the path and then you had to drive back out of the lane and park on the main road if you could find a place to park on a 'first come' basis. These were the details that were not used / copied from the property details by Hotels.com. I am disabled and walk with crutches or a walking stick. We had 2 suitcases, a cool box, a bed prop, hold all and a shopping bag full of food for a weeks stay. All had to be taken along the uneven path to the property by my husband. We enjoyed the house, the fabulous garden. All the amenities of the house were 1st class. The village was a good base to visit many places. The bonus of aircraft flying through the valley doing training runs from the local RAF base was great. But had we known the true access details we would not have booked the property lovely as it was.

The view from the cottage is stunning. It is very quiet there, every day we were greeted by birds and sheep. The people in Cemmaes are very friendly, one of them even addressed us in Dutch. The cottage is charming, we felt at home there in no time. The fridge in the kitchen is small, but big enough for three days of groceries for 2. The outside space is inviting and comfortable. We loved the planting. One week of our stay the weather was very hot: 30 - 33 degrees. Luckily the downstairs bedroom stayed cool, we slept well. During the day it was too hot to sit outside, it's a pity that the sun parasol was way too small to give enough shadow. So we made trips to the sea an to waterfalls, very enjoyable. . When the weather became colder, we immediately could smell mould. It was not as bad as in the former reviews because of a new ventilation system, which helped us to stay in the downstairs bedroom. Still the pillows became damp which was not very comfortable but managable: we dried them during the day in the upstairs livingroom. We had a great time exploring the surrounding hills, the small friendly towns and villages with their castles, galleries and restaurants. It was a pleasant surprise to find so many vegan and vegetarian options in almost every restaurant! So despite some issues, we were sorry to have to go home!

The check in process was so easy and instructions and recommendations about the local area were really helpful. This place has everything we wanted for a cosy and relaxing family break and to immerse ourselves in the surrounding beautiful nature. We will be coming back!

Booked a five night stay as a birthday treat, to get away, forget the chores and relax.

Location of cottage was beautiful. Sadly, though, we left the cottage a day early due to several issues. As other reviewers have mentioned, on entering there was a strong smell of damp. So much so in the downstairs bedroom that we decided to sleep in the smaller bedroom upstairs. To the right of the front door there was a large patch of damp on the wall, flaking paint and signs of mould. Also present, a small amount of water on the floor and noticeable damage to the base of the kitchen unit from what I assume is a relatively long standing water leak due to damage it has caused by penertrating the wall and kitchen unit. The cupboard under the sink also smelt damp. These issues we reported to Sykes, we are still waiting for a responce. We left a day early as we were also experiencing increasingly foul smells from the bathroom upstairs, which we could smell coming through into the upstairs bedroom. The property was also under equipped. No surface cleaner in the kitchen, the washing up liquid supplied only lasted 2 days, so we brought more and left that behind. No tea bags on arrival. Kitchen upgrade - as different from images online, has left just a smaller than average undercounter fridge that was just too small. I feel the cottage should not be rented out until these issues are resolved. If it was our personal home we would be addressing asap. Such as shame, as it really did spoil our holiday.

The property is absolutely gorgeous and we will definitely be back, purely due to the view outside!

The downstairs bedroom unfortunately stunk of damp so we ended up having to sleep upstairs, unfortunately if there’s more than 2 of you, you will not have the choice. Also was not provided with anything to make the fire, which we were a bit gutted about as it is supposed to be included in the rent price. The cleanliness was not great either, the floor was thick with black dog fur, doesn’t seem to of been hoovered or mopped at all upstairs. We loved the fighter jets going past every day!

Firstly would like to say what a beautiful place this is, the views are amazing and peaceful.

House is lovely, however the cleanliness was not as good. Lots of dust and cobwebs around the property, could do with a deep clean. Double bed downstairs creaks with every move. Stairs also creak with every step. Fridge is also very small for 4 people.

We had a lovely week at this cottage it is such a beautiful place.

We had an absolutely amazing stay, the weather this weekend was great so we spent most of our time outside in the patio area, which has a lovely view of the fields, streams and hills.

The big comfy sofas are also a big plus for watching films! The place was very clean, and nicely decorated. The one thing that could be improved upon is providing tea and coffee in the cottage, which we did not buy when we did our food shop as we assumed there would be some already in the house. We did leave some tea bags behind for the next guests. Another point is that as we cooked in the kitchen, there was not any disinfectant spray or cloths in the kitchen to wipe the surfaces after. Other than these two points it was a perfect stay! Thankyou very much.

A very peaceful and secluded spot to relax in. I'm going to start with the negatives first. I've done this as these were things that set the tone for the rest of our stay. I hope the owners take this as a constructive offering as this place has the capacity to be better than it currently is. First! Please don't say on the description that there will be a starter pack for the log burner and not supply one. The cottage was understandably cold on the first evening and the nearest supply point for wood is 8 miles away. When you arrive late on a Saturday, expecting to find supplies, it can be a bit disheartening. Toilet roll. There was half a roll of "economy" toilet roll in the property. I'm not suggesting that it should be stocked like Tesco, but it might be nice if there were at least one full roll. The grill pan doesn't fit the grill - it's too small ! It may have been replaced at some point but please make sure it will sit in its rails! The information manual needs a little update. The instructions for the log burner don't match what's there! It's actually really easy to use! Some simple instructions for the TV remotes would help. 3 remotes for one screen is a bit confusing. We figured it after a day or so but a little help would have been appreciated. Last. The downstairs bedroom smells of damp. The room ( like the rest of the cottage ) was clean upon arrival, but there is evidence of damp in the wardrobes. If these things can be sorted, then it will move up from average to very good. Now some positives! It's very, very quiet!! The kitchen is pretty well equipped and crockery and microwave all looked new. Great fridge / freezer! Bathroom is pleasant and the beds are comfy with good quality bedding. The views over the river are wonderful and the patio area will be superb when the weather is right. When lit, the log burner gives off an amazing amount of heat and logs last several hours if the flue is kept almost closed. The coffee shop / cafe / corner shop which is opposite the pub is a wonderful little place with friendly staff and worth going in more than once. Can't comment on the pub as it was closed during the Christmas week but there seem to be favourable reviews on line. Would we go back? Yes, if the little glitches are sorted. Dave & Karen

Pros: - beautiful views - lots of character - nice location - nice wood burner - lovely bathroom - outdoor garden seating - peaceful - local cafe/shop good (shame it's not dog friendly) - good access to local walk - internet speed for streaming etc - Short drive to a small town with everything needed Cons: - lots of mould downstairs - wardrobes unusable due to mould - mattresses are extremely soft and caused back pain - parking, but can't be helped, just need to be aware of

The property is in the most gorgeous setting and the views are wonderful.

Sitting out on the patio wrapped up all cosy in those very comfortable chairs will be a fond memory of mine forever now. We were lucky to have experienced the fighter jets fly through the valley while we were sitting out. The property is very comfortable and you can tell that a lot of love and work is being put into it. We loved having the log burner on and getting cosy. The kitchen is equipped well enough. The bathroom is lovely. You could spend ages on that loo looking out at the views! Lol We never had issues with parking on the street but if you bring a lot of stuff with you be mindful that you'll have to carry it all a bit of a way down to the property. Tip: have a little torch with you if it's dark. Now for the not so good... There are some issues but it's an old house and to be expected I think. As we entered the property on first arrival there was an overwhelming smell of damp and there is some damp in the bedroom wardrobe. (I purchased a condensation thing from home bargains and left it in there to help). Unfortunately also on arrival it seemed that the property had not been fully cleaned. The beds were clean and changed but all the surfaces hadn't been done and were dirty & dusty and it hadn't been hoovered. Sykes took so long getting back to me about this and not very nice when they did and I didn't want to spoil my trip so I gave up and bought a broom and cleaning wipes and sorted it all myself. That aside, I really thought the property was wonderful and I would definitely book again.

The cottage is in a fantastic location and well set out.

It was a bit cobwebby and dusty in places but hey you should see my house ! But it was the end of the season and I am really not complaining. A little more signage of the property may be beneficial as it was slightly difficult to find. I really could have done with a broom as our dog tended to bring bits and bobs in on her paws.we cannot express how much we loved the property and did not want to leave (we did think about changing the locks and squatting), however we took the sensible approach and booked another week in September 2025. We were in awe of the surroundings and the jets on the loop, and The Cross Foxes. Can’t wait until next year .

Very nice property lovely and quiet only had one problem it was hard to find and lacking in parking.

We stayed here for a week last year and decided to come back because we enjoyed it.

There has been two very good improvements since our last stay which is the bathroom it’s now beautiful new shower room ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ For that, And the WiFi another ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ massive improvement. However the mattress had been changed in the main double bed ⭐️ which I found to be extremely uncomfortable my body ached for most of the morning after getting up ! The place was very clean and tidy ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ The parasol was very small which we had difficulty shading from the sun on the loungers could be bigger. Would I stay there again ? Only if they have a better more comfortable bed !! After all, almost a third of our time was spent sleeping in the bed

A comfortable cottage in a beautiful spot.

We did enjoy our stay. Just one real issue for us: the cafetiere which you can see in the photos of the kitchen is no longer there, so the espresso maker is the only way to make coffee and there is no teapot either.

We stayed at the cottage for a week in May and had an amazing time.

The location is spectacular and the cottage is so cosy with everything you need. We were lucky to have blue skies and sun the first few days and enjoyed afternoons on the deck and dinner in the sun. Then rainier days enjoyed cosy evenings on the sofa. The location was perfect and short drives to some amazing walks with waterfalls. We will definitely be returning.

A lovely, warm, quiet, comfortable cottage with fantastic views of the river.

Wood burner appreciated. Kitchen well equipped and stocked with basics. The shop is two minutes walk, pub over the road. If it hadn’t rained for our whole week’s stay, the garden/balcony would be ideal. So we were very grateful for Sky tv! Great walks around. Highly recommend! Hope to return.

Lovely cottage with beautiful views of the river and valley.

The cottage is well equipped and very tastefully decorated, with a log burner making it extra cosy. Loved the peace and quiet, perfect get away. Would also recommend the local pub, really friendly locals with a great atmosphere, check opening times.

We really loved this stay.

The cottage is clean and spacious. The deck with views over the river and valley are fantastic Really large private outdoor space. Great location for out-door activities with some great trails, mountains and pubs within easy proximity. The local shop, leading the way with sustainability - would highly recommend this

A lovely cottage that had everything we needed.

Beautiful location and friendly village. Woke up in the morning looking across the fields with the river below was bliss

Stayed at the property a few years ago, and was managed locally it’s been nicely decorated since, shame the shower hasn’t been upgraded though.

It’s ideally located in peace and tranquility and in a lovely part of the UK. Still awaiting a response with regards to a spillage which caused minor damage, the communication from Sykes has been awful. I have a couple more bookings through Sykes which I’m now rethinking which has put a real negative on the stay.

Cosy cottage to stay in for a city break ,based in picturesque place and lovely neighbours behind :) The only thing we struggled with was access to the property .

The property was exactly what was described in the add.

The view point from the patio area was so beautiful and peaceful. The only downside to the outside area was there was no shade, desperately needs a large parasol if you’re lucky enough to have the weather that we had ! It could also give shelter from the rain, as it would be just as beautiful in the rain. It was I little awkward walking through peoples gated gardens to get to the property.. Overall we really enjoyed our stay. Well worth visiting this property.

Having just spent an amazing 7 days at Penygeulan, It looks like the owners have been busy over the winter, as some of the photo's are now out of date, there is a new fireplace and Log Burner in the Living room and the upstairs bedroom has had a really nice makeover.

We will certainly recommend this to our friends and would love to get back in the summer months to be able to relax on the terrace. The outside space and terrace is stunning, with an amazing view of the valley and the sound of the river, also the added bonus of being on the "Mach Loop" we had the pleasure of watching the fast jets through the valley on two of the days, seeing the new F35's in action was breath taking.

Lovely holiday really enjoyed our stay.

Very relaxing getaway!

We left a letter for the owners how we fell in love with their property and it showed all the hard work and tlc they have put in.

We highly recommend Pengeulan it is in a superb location overlooking the river, great for wildlife and bird spotting, saw our first kingfisher. Stunning mountains too , also on the mach loop so saw a few aircraft on our own viewing veranda ! Lovely to sit out on and listen to the river bubbling

we had a wonderful stay at your beautiful cottage.

Parking was an issue at times. There were no waste baskets in any of the rooms. When we arrived at 14.50 the cleaners were in and said they would not be ready for another hour. They let us leave our luggage whilst we went food shopping in a nearby town. The setting and location are beautiful

We had a lovely, restful holiday at Pen Y Guelan.

It is in a great location with a gorgeous view. The river is fascinating to watch with a wealth of wildlife visiting.We had to keep the field glasses handy at all times so we didn’t miss anything-very distracting when cooking and eating !The cottage is well- equipped and the weather was good enough for us to sit on the terrace at times. It’s clear that the owners have worked hard to make the most of this special place. The local shop and pub are very convenient and we found Cemmaes a friendly place. It is a beautiful area and we enjoyed some great walks. The Osprey Dyfi Centre is a must !

We had a wonderful half term break to Penygeulen.

The cottage is in a beautiful location with the most stunning views from every window in the house of the River Dyfi. The terrace is beautifully done to enjoy the views. If you can tear yourself away from the views, the cottage is in an ideal location to explore Snowdonia. We visited the nearby towns of Dolgellau & Machynlleth, Tal-y-llyn Lake and coastal Aberdyfi. Everything in the house is brand new and very comfortable. The log burner and the starter pack was most welcomed. We enjoyed a fire every evening. However, the central heating meant that the cottage was very warm and cozy in February, without the log burner. Our girls loved the cottage and are begging to go back one day. We may well return. Really impressed. Highly recommend.
