  • "Liked the cottage and location."

Unfortunately, our July weather was more like that in April - cool, showery - and we couldn't use the cottage heating properly as there were no instructions for the thermostat/controller. The timer was set on double Summer Time, but didn't seem to switch on/off on a timer anyway. We managed to switch on & off the heating manually by raising or lowering the temperature setting. We didn't manage to get the radio to work, although it was switched on (and buzzing). We couldn't see the radio controls very well as ,like the thermostat, it was too high up - and no handbook. Otherwise, we had a good time, and would recommend the cottage. It is well maintained, clean and comfortable. Just needs some basic instructions, especially for the heating and what to do with rubbish.

The dog friendly beach is an easy walk from the cottage. A special thank you to the owner who drove from Birmingham to clean the patio after a recent flood, I really appreciated him going the extra mile; being able to use the garden with my dog, made me feel safe. Steps of both back doors slippy. 3 Steps below side gate are wood and, yes slippy. The whole is a gullly from the side lane into the garden of No.1. Yes I suffered muscle pulls and joint injuries, and I'm generally quite fit. Most dogs could easily get over the low back wall. Otherwise ths accommodation is good, credit when credit is due. AM

Upstairs lovely wood burning stove, great shower, all you need. Small enclosed outside area, but so many dog walks from house it wasnt needed. Loved the quiet road and night sky.

  • "In many ways this is a really lovely property that is well equipped."

Having said that, it wasn't perfect for us. The location is beautiful, and the house was tidy and clean, except for several wispy spiders in each room. To be fair, I should have expected that in a cottage of this style. There were a few small issues. The double bedroom didn't have enough space between the bed and the chest of drawers so several times I walked into the bed. The downstairs hall was very narrow, and the stairs were uncarpeted meaning they felt slippery without shoes. The heating system worked really well, but it was difficult to get much fresh air into the cottage. On the whole, I would recommend the cottage to any couple or small family that don't mind spiders!

Fairbourne is a hidden treasure, having holidayed in Barmouth for the past 6 years it was a treat to stay somewhere quieter but still access to the busier town either by foot (3 miles) or a 5 minute train ride. Cottage was very comfortable and clean, had everything I needed for my stay with two dogs. Enclosed garden, quiet location and very easy walk to a wonderful beach. Cottage bedrooms are on the ground floor with the kitchen and living area at street level which I loved, milk, tea, coffee and cake provided for arrival Owners very nice and great communication. • "6.5/10 cottage The location was great."

Lots of things to do and see on both foot, car and train. There’s a fast flowing stream 2 metres from the front door which was lovely - the dog loved her morning paddle and you could hear it slightly when sat in the lounge/ kitchen. Parking outside was easy - we managed to unload everything on the doorstep and then park on the shared off-road driveway. The log burner was lovely (and much needed in a cold March) and they provided a bag of large logs. The only negative to the house being upside down was that it was absolutely freezing downstairs (particularly the hallway, but both bedrooms too) as all the heat from the log burner rose. The heating was good but obviously would not come on if the log burner had been on as the temp gauge was upstairs (very cold mornings). Lovely kitchen - plenty of cutlery and plates provided, and washing machine was good. Comfy bed downstairs, and the shower was great. Lots of storage for coats and clothes. TV was good too, Netflix on there - just don’t forget to log out! The little garden was perfect for our small cocker spaniel that doesn’t jump, but if you have a dog that likes hopping short fences, I’d be wary! We had to contact the cottage owner over a small query and he was very helpful and informative - lovely man to deal with if anything were to go wrong! The reason we wouldn’t give the cottage anything above a 6.5 was it’s cleanliness. Normally, I overlook reviews about how dirty a place is but they were not wrong. The sofa cracks has mountains of crumbs in (which lifted onto the main cushions when you sat down), the floor had not been mopped nor hoovered properly and was incredibly dirty, under the sofa wasn’t pleasant - our dogs toy got lost under there and it was not nice retrieving that! The kitchen pans had not been cleaned properly either and were lined with sticky white grease which we had to clean ourselves (bring your own induction pans as they were really bad - food getting stuck onto it even with a lot of oil), the log burner had not been cleaned (we cleaned it spotless ourselves) and soot went all over our clothing the first time we lit it. If they provided a hoover (which they need to!) we would have hoovered the place ourselves to make it more bearable. The cleanliness is not what you expect for a Sykes cottage, especially for the money you pay. Overall, it was a good stay and a lovely little cottage, it’s a shame a lot of the positive qualities were overshadowed by the dirt but if they upped their cleaning (considerably!) we’d stay here again.

Thank you for your feedback. I am very sorry to hear of the issues you experienced during your stay. Should I have been made aware of this at the time I would gladly have sent a cleaner to put things right. Please be assured I am investigating this with the cleaner to avoid these issues for future guests. Property Owner

The cottage is amazing(everything was working, strong WIFI, comfortable sofa and bed, nice and warm, plus chimney :) ) Spacious off-road parking, good location, beautiful views. My personal recomendations: Small things to add(improve), that will make this cottage even better: - missing shoe rack by the entrance - missing basic cleaning product, extra washing up+ sponges - Add one or two bigger pots to the kitchen (5L, 7L) and few more glasses( tumbler, pint) - Add bathroom wall cabinet next to mirrow to keep esential toilet stuff. - I would focus more on cleaning. A lot of cobwebs everywhere(easy to improve- it took me 10min to take them off whith the broom), fridge could be more clean. Other than that amazing place. Strong 9 out of 10 Thank you

  • "The cleanliness issue was disappointing ; the owner , who lives at a considerable distance , had been let down and was very apologetic."

We are sure he will do all he can to avoid a repetition. In any event , the fact remains that we had a superb holiday in a fabulous location. The cottage , the best we have ever stayed in, has been wonderfully converted from a barn and offers every comfort. The wood burning stove is excellent but there were no logs when we arrived . We had taken the precaution of taking our own logs but we suggest that a starter ‘kit’ should be provided except in high summer, and guidance given about buying more logs locally at a reasonable price. We emphasise that the electric central heating was very good. We found the representative of Sykes cottages very pleasant and efficient.
