  • "Title: Awful Stay - Dirty, Damp, and Rundown Property I am utterly disappointed with my stay at Awelon, a property I booked through Sykes."

After a grueling six-hour drive, I was looking forward to a relaxing stay, but what awaited me was nothing short of appalling. On entering the bedroom, I was immediately hit by a musty smell of damp. Upon further inspection, I found mold and damp patches in the corners of the room and around the windows. The wallpaper was peeling off, clearly a sign of long-standing moisture issues. Adding to the horror, I discovered cobwebs, dead spiders, and an overwhelming number of live mosquitoes. Instead of settling in, I was left with no choice but to tackle the situation myself using a battered and filthy hoover, which added to my frustration. The entire property was in an unacceptable state of disrepair and cleanliness. The walls were covered in filthy marks, many light bulbs were not working, and the overall atmosphere was rundown and depressing. The washing machine was no exception—it was disgustingly dirty and emitted a foul smell, making it unusable. The bathroom was also in a deplorable state. The shower grout was brown and clearly hadn’t been cleaned properly for a long time, and the bathroom itself felt unhygienic and neglected. To top it all off, the outside sunroom was so filthy and dilapidated that it was completely unusable. I was not in a position to make a formal complaint during my stay due to time constraints, but when I reported these issues afterward, I was absolutely shocked by the response. The owner refused to offer any compensation whatsoever. This is simply unbelievable! Given the disgraceful state of the property, a gesture of goodwill would have been the bare minimum, but instead, I was met with utter disregard and no accountability. All my issues were evidenced with photos, which I sent to both Sykes and the owner, but they still refused to take any responsibility or provide compensation. It’s such a shame, as the property has the potential to be so much better. The views and location are absolutely amazing, but unfortunately, the state of the accommodation overshadowed all of that. My experience at Awelon was an absolute nightmare, and I would strongly advise anyone considering it to look elsewhere. This property is far from what is advertised and needs serious attention before it can be deemed a suitable holiday rental. Avoid at all costs!

Thank you very much for the feedback. We are very disappointed that you were not happy with your stay. The team is urgently investigating all the points made and remedying where improvement is required. Property Owner

  • "Excellent, comfortable, well equipped."

Comfortable beds and a very good shower were especially welcome. Only a few problems to mention. Biggest niggle was taps, it took several turns of tap handles to produce a steady flow. Hot tap in bathroom was dripping so probably needs replacement washer. Environvent in hall was blowing cold air constantly with no obvious means of switching it off. No caddy or bags for food waste which we have in NE Wales. Otherwise a most enjoyable stay.

Thanks for your feedback, we’ve had all the washers replaced now, apologies they seem to have all gone at once. We have the Envirovent system to keep the air fresh in the bedrooms, the air circulation can be poor in old cottages. We’ve recently had a new system installed and it was at its max to start, but we’ve now turned it down. There’s a caddy, it’s just hidden behind the bins - it was getting left out and then blowing away! Glad you had enjoyable stay and thank you for taking time to feedback. Property Owner

  • "The cottage was beautiful with stunning views all around."

The location was also perfect for visiting a variety of local beaches and towns. However the flooring throughout was filthy, making my 15 month olds socks black within minutes. It made us feel uncomfortable for him to play on the floor with the toys that were kindly provided and had to lay a blanket down and keep him in one area. We also checked out the cabin for our son to play in but after hearing scratching noises from the sofa in there, we quickly left and didn’t return. The bedrooms were comfortable and the black out blinds were great for my sons nap. Also the cookies and wine were a lovely touch. Overall a nice stay but cleanliness needs improving.

Thank you for your feedback, we really appreciate it. Thank you for raising the issues during your stay, we would have been more than happy to get our cleaners to visit during your stay if you are ever unhappy with any of the cleaning. However, we have feedback and discussed the floor cleaning with them. I’ve since stayed at Awelon myself and the floor is definitely being cleaned well. We’ve check the cabin too, and there seems to be no furry friends in their luckily. Hope to welcome you back. Property Owner

Photos don't do it justice. Everything was provided for an easy luxury stay including entertainment if the weather is poor. Location is very isolated but is a stunning place for walks and drives around the coast and ideal for us as we wanted to be somewhere far from city life. Buzzing Abersoch is not far by car. We had a slight issue with the front door which was fixed very quickly. We would highly recommend this property and we are likely to return ourselves.

Thank you for your feedback and glad the engineer fixed the door quickly. We’ve since had another engineer out who has fixed the issue with the hinges permanently. We would welcome you back to Awelon in the future. Thank you Property Owner

The property has a good layout and and everything you need. However the property could do with a lick of paint and an upgrade in places (quite a bit of mould etc in the shower) and a thorough clean. We have a baby who was learning to crawl and the floors were not hoovered or mopped when we arrived and there was no mop for us to use, the high chair was also not clean (I understand they do get dirty but I almost didn’t want to put her in it).

The kitchen work tops were sticky. I had to phone Menai and two cleaners came out and cleaned for 2.5 hours each (5 hour total). We were really disappointed with the lack of cleanliness and also the garden needed a good mow. The property would benefit from a good lick of paint outside and regular deep cleans and a regular gardener who maintains the outside pots. We would not return again.

I am sorry to hear the cottage was not cleaned to your liking on arrival, we were very surprised by this as we have not had complaints of this nature previously, and the housekeepers are thorough and conscientious and the cleanliness feedback for the house is usually very high. We are very glad however they were able to come straight back out to address the issues you raised. We're afraid in the extreme heat we have experienced lately, our plant pots (despite our best efforts) have suffered a little, but otherwise the garden is regularly attended and maintained. Felt like a home away from home, gorgeous decor and well equipped in every way - from great kitchen items, to board games to some Childrens toys. Everything about this stay made us feel at home and comfortable. Even though the weather was very mixed it made the rainy days lovely and relaxed as we could switch off properly knowing our two year old enjoyed the space and those toys as well. Beds so comfy and the nice bed linen - this really made a difference compared to lots of other holiday rentals. We loved it and want to come back again in autumn/winter to cosy up with that log burner. Even the location being so rural it felt like a real switch off. The day we left our almost 3 year old asked me ‘mummy can we live here now?’ That says it all x

Very comfortable beds, well equipped, tastefully decorated and entertainment for the little people. Great spot for exploring the beaches of the Llyn. We were disappointed this time however with the very late (6pm) check in and very early (9am) check out, which was not apparent until we had booked the cottage. This was quite a challenge with young children and made it feel like we had lost a day of our holiday. Surely this could be amended now the pandemic is over?

Thanks for the feedback, we’ve taken the opportunity to review the change over times and have now reverted these to the pre covid times. Thank you for highlighting this. Hopefully we can welcome you back to Awelon soon. Property Owner

We spent a very warm and sunny week staying at Awelon in June. The cottage has been renovated to a very high standard, the living area was very comfortable and unique in its sense of style. The toys and games were really appreciated by both of my children. The cottage is well situated for lots of local beaches, and also for relaxing, at the end of the day. This is probably one of the best cottages we have stayed in, so good we are returning next year. The only very minor suggestions I might make are a lower tog duvet, as we were very warm at night. Also, some of the children’s furniture might benefit from being more firmly bolted to the wall. I would highly recommend Awelon.

  • "Awelon is a lovely cottage in a beautiful location and we would love to go back next year."

A couple of things could be improved though. Firstly, we thought the amended check in and departure times were a bit unfair, especially as we were then contacted and asked to delay our arrival by an extra half an hour as the cleaners had been delayed gaining access to the property. This meant that we only really had 6 days when we had paid for a week. We even decided to come home on Thursday night as we would have had to be up at the crack of dawn to be ready to vacate by 9am on the Friday. We may have been able to overlook this as we understand covid has caused changes but the cottage wasn't even thoroughly cleaned. I had to hoover it myself as there were crisps and things in the sofa, cobwebs in the living room and some of the cups in the property had not been cleaned properly. This made us uneasy, especially knowing the risks of covid. Given the extra time we had to allow for cleaning, I would have expected the place to be spotless. It was a nice surprise to see a washing machine as this hadn't been listed in the facilities but no pegs were provided to hang anything out. The garden furniture is past its best and a couple of the chairs had broken spindles. The master bedroom we thought was quite dated, the furniture is old and quite musty and we had to force the wardrobe door to keep it shut, it would be nice to have some nicer furniture in there. Hopefully this feedback will enable you to make a lovely cottage even more comfortable for future guests and we hope to return next year.

Pictures on site probably don't portray this cottage as being big, but we were surprised that it was as big as it was. Would highly recommend to any one. Location being in between Aberdaron and Abersoch is quiet, but so long as you happy to drive 10 mins you can easily then find a shop, pub, restaurant or beach. For walkers great spot to. Lots of ground attached to cottage for either kids to play or just chill. Personally even little things like good wifi made a difference here. Loved just chilling in the main room gazing out of the massive windows at the views. If this cottage was based in Abersoch it would be double the price

Would be nice if there was washing up liquid and toilet paper on arrival. Weather was great but only one chair in courtyard and one sunbed. Didn't need to use the cabin.

If you’re after more than building sand castles, you can pop to the National Trust site just next to the beach to learn about the history and wildlife of the Llyn or for the more adventurous, follow the coastal footpath to Porth Meudwy where you can catch a boat to Bardsey Island!
