  • "This cottage proved to be an expensive let down."

    The patio door stuck. The kitchen was absolutely filthy. There were no Jay cloths, no detergent, no kitchen spray...the dish washer was broken, pans were stored with burnt on food, there was no storage space available for our food due to every cupboard being full of mismatched crockery. We had to go out and buy detergent, spray, kitchen roll, Jay cloths. A grimy smell of dirty furniture pervaded the downstairs. Upstairs was slightly better...the bathroom was manky but functional, the bedrooms had clean linen- shame about the large, heavy mirrors that were not attached to the walls, merely propped up on a dressing table and on a bedside table in the children's bedroom-an accident waiting to happen. I did email Sykes to air my concerns and dissatisfaction but received no reply. Surprising, because every other cottage that we've booked with Sykes has been immaculately kept and as a company they have been brilliant.

    Dear Mrs Rudd thank you for your feedback. I just wish that you had contacted me during your stay in June and in the four months after as I would have rectified any problem. There was a welcome basket and lots of products such as shampoo, conditioner , washing up liquid, washing machine capsules under the sink plus drinks and milk in the fridge The property is always cleaned and many guests return. The upstairs mirrors are now on the walls and I’ve added another tv. I will add extra cloths & sponges too kind regards Julie Property Owner

  • "It is a very comfortable cottage."

    The stairs are quite steep, but manageable. Julie and Neil are so helpful. Am definitely booking in Spring. Lots to do in that area as well.

  • "Julie made us really welcome and suggested places for us to visit."

    Good dog walks near by, local butchers excellent. Cottage was really comfortable and well equipped my only concern were the steps which were really steep and my dad struggled a little but otherwise everything was good thank you.

  • "Bluebell Cottage was perfect for our needs, being a short break in Yorkshire, to attend a wedding with some additional days sightseeing."

    The first day and nights were cool and the heating worked well. We only used the kitchen for breakfast but it was well equipped for all catering. Shops for all our requirements were close and convenient. Owner Julie was attentive, giving useful local information without being intrusive

  • "We come to York every year to visit family locally and we looking for somewhere to return to regularly, unfortunately this was not it."

    The house was well located and a good size and price for what we needed. The welcome basket was a nice touch and we are thankful for that. The children enjoyed a few nice treats. However it was not clean. I had to buy some disinfectant to clean the toilet which was disgusting and also clean the basin and shower. The hob was filthy and I was glad we were not cooking at the property as we spent the evenings with family. There were only three bowls so we had to wash up one before the last person could have breakfast. The dishwasher looked like it was on its last legs so we were not keen to use it. Suggest buying a wipe clean table cloth as the grooves in the wooden table accommodate dirt and the placemats provided are stained. There are not enough seating for everyone to sit comfortably in the front room and watch the TV. The photo of the front garden is misleading as it’s just open and part of the car park area. The blurb to the cottage needs to mention the steep stairs and the fact that the first step is just outside the door to the main bedroom. I have dyspraxia and I was terrified I would come out of my bedroom and fall down the stairs. Disappointing from what we have experienced previously from Sykes and we will not be returning.

I have updated the listing to make future guests aware on the website. I am disappointed that you found the cottage was not clean on this occasion and have taken steps to ensure this does not happen again. I would have been available to remedy this had you contacted me and I could have reassured you with regard to the dishwasher. There are 8 bowls in the cupboard but I have added more smaller ones at your suggestion. We are having the garden enclosed later this month and I will update the description. I do want my guests to enjoy their stay. The bluebells are beautiful and back at Brayton Barff at the moment. Kind regards Julie Property Owner

  • "Perfect location for us as visiting family in the village over Easter."

    Immaculate home with everything you need. Walking distance to Tesco and my husbands childhood memory of Dawson butchers. Had the pleasure of meeting the owner and her puppy Milo who were both lovely. Our young pup made a new friend. We did mention to her that being dog friendly we’d have preferred the garden be enclosed and it’s already something she is looking to do. Would love to stay again when we are next in the area. Maybe let Dudley and Milo do zoomies together.

  • "We really enjoyed our stay in Bluebell Cottage."

    It was warm and cosy despite the very cold weather. Comfortable and good facilities in the kitchen. We feel the steepness of the stairs should have been mentioned in the description.

    Bluebell Cottage was a lovely cottage everything was there that was needed position of cottage was nice for lovely walks and a lovely butchers if needed We met Julie who owns the cottage who was very helpful and knowledgeable we did suggest maybe more fencing so it could be an enclosed garden also understairs would be nice as cloakroom and shoes cupboard as there was nowhere downstairs for coats and shoes There was a lovely welcome pack for us which included treats for our two doggies

Selby 1.8 miles; York 17 miles.

The small and pretty village of Brayton is an ancient parish, dating back to Saxon times and mentioned in the Domesday Book. There is a selection of local shops, a butcher and a delightful village green, as well as a Norman church and a Methodist chapel dating back to the 1800s. Less than two miles away is the historic town of Selby, a real hidden gem with an impressive abbey and a fine selection of restaurants. Also close by is the fabulous city of York which teems with interest for the holidaymaker: the Minster, its medieval walls, boat trips on the River Ouse, York Races, museums (including the famous National Railway Museum and the Castle Museum), and the internationally-renowned Jorvik Viking Centre and its "time trip" experience.
