The added extras of wine, teas and coffee were appreciated too. Information about the cottage and directions to it were also very helpful. We had a lovely holiday and would recommend both Appletree cottage and Pickering to anyone considering visiting the area.

Its just about 10 mins to the shops and NYMR and potter hill fish and chips is a little closer.Being on the main road did not bother us as there is double glazing to keep the noise out. We have been going to Pickering for many years the lady where we usually go has retired so we had to find somewhere else and Appleleaf Cottage is the one we will definitely be coming back .Philip and Lesley Cadman

  • "The cottage is well equipped with modern decorative design and fittings."

We were perhaps unlucky that the main road outside is currently having new gas pipes laid with single lane traffic and traffic lights resulting in long queues of lorries (main route to Scarborough and Whitby) and cars from 6am to 6pm. Very noisy. Cottage was well situated and easy to walk into town or NYM station which given the roadworks was a bonus! Eventually we cut short our stay by two days as the roadworks were too intrusive but we did enjoy trips on NYR railway, and visits to Whitby and Helmseley. Perhaps self catering is not for us anymore.

    Hello Hazel,

We are glad that you found the cottage to be well equipped and liked the decor.

It is disappointing that you did not fully enjoy your stay. We have secondary glazing in the property and other guests have mentioned that they haven't been disturbed in previous reviews. We work hard to make sure everything is perfect and it is frustrating that something out of our control like emergency gas works has stopped this from happening .

As you found Appleleaf Cottage is a short walk away from the town’s attractions and a great base to explore the local area.

The cottage is welcoming and homely, set on the edge of the town centre which is only a pleasant 8 minute stroll away from shops, supermarkets etc. also great central point for visiting the many attractions that North Yorkshire has to offer. Private parking right at your rear entrance was a big bonus. We would certainly love to return in the future.

  • "We had a lovely short holiday in the cottage."

It is within walking distance (10 min walk) from two large supermarkets and the town centre and the town is very well placed to explore the North York Moors. The cottage is clean, well furnished, with all kitchen utensils you may want to use, including a cafetiere and two fans. It is a small cottage and I understand why the owners won't put 4 chairs in the kitchen as they would get in the way. With the lovely hot weather, we had breakfast and dinner 'al fresco' in the back garden. It is a patio with a rockery, but is surrounded with an ivy hedge and there is a feeling of peace. I really enjoyed sitting there and watching the swifts go past and the sparrows chirp. The kids really loved the cottage. We had a circular walk from Goathland to Beck Hole and a detour to Thomason Foss. We didn't get the steam train, but waited at the station to see it arrive and depart from Goathland. We visited the lovely Beck Isle museum, full of interesting things. Pickering town is well worth a visit, with the beck and shops. We also spent a day at Thornton-le-Dale. The last day we relocated to Filey as it was too hot!

Parking space at the back is great as the cottage is right on the main road. The owners got in touch to see if everything was ok and if we needed anything we just had to ask, we didn't need to. Pickering is a great location and not far to drive to the coast. Robin Hoods Bay is well worth a visit. This was a last minute weekend away and would definitely recommend Appleleaf to friends and family.

Very clean and cosy. There is everything you need. Good position for exploring the local area. The parking space at the end of the garden is a bonus not often available with cottages. Pickering is a very pleasant town with all the amenities we required. York and Whitby are in easy traveling distance. We used the excellent Park and Ride service to avoid any car parking issues. Enjoyed our stay very much and hope to return next year.

  • "Cottage was lovely."

Was abit disappointed to find that there was no iron or ironing board when you are staying somewhere for a week I wouldn't of expected to have to buy an iron while we were away. Also there was no hoover so we could only use a dustpan and brush to pick up things. Just felt for the money paid and having a washing machine we would of expected a iron and ironing board. Nice to have a bottle of wine left for us. Overall enjoyed our stay and visiting the surrounding areas.

The decoration and furnishings have been designed by a person with flair in this area. The cottage is scrupulously clean, and well equipped. There is a dedicated parking place at the rear of this listed building, which was originally a farm workers' dwelling. The communication by owners Mark and Alison was excellent. The property is within walking distance of Pickering town centre and the North York Moors Railway. There are also many other attractions close by (Scarborough, Whitby, York, Castle Howard, Flamingo Land Zoo) I would have no hesitation in returning to this property

Elderly, very young children, or people with poor mobility should be aware that the bathroom is on the ground floor, and the stairs are steep. The cottage is only a pavements width from the very busy A170 and you do have very loud road noise. Having said all that we managed and had a great week. Hosts very helpful, great communications, and a bottle of wine to welcome us. Lovely neighbours.
