The owners were very friendly and the farm animals brilliant for young children. The cottages facilities were great and had more than we expected and the location of Farndale is beautiful.

We thoroughly enjoyed our first visit enough to want to go back. The scenery is just breathtaking. There is something to do for everyone. We walked, visited Pickering, Whitby and other nearby places, just wonderful. Owners are lovely people and very helpful.

  • "We had a great stay at The Old Carthouse over Christmas."

The owners were very accommodating and ensured the cottage was Christmas ready with a real tree, the surrounding areas have plenty of great walks, a lovely local pub and if you want a holiday where you can get away from real world stress then this is the place to go. We will definitely be going back again! The access roads are a bit of a challenge in the dark and fog if your not familiar with the area so as a word of advice I would suggest doing a google street map of the roads leading to the cottage.

please note real tree provided at customers request. Property Owner

That said despite no mobile reception, the wi fi makes up for it, if you need to be in touch with the outside world. Enjoyment of our time there was so good we are looking to book up for next year.

It is an added bonus and we found it a wonderful place to stay with stunning views of the valley. A great place to stay with many good walks locally and a good base to drive to near villages, we visited Pickering for the steam train experience, Helmsley for the market and Abbey, Hutton le hole craft centre just to name a few - two good moor walks and 3 beautiful wooded waterfall walks - this is a place we shall re visit and would be happy to stay again at the Old Cart House - the owners most amiable and friendly.

  • "The cottage was well equipped with plenty of space for a large party, so people could easily split into groups and do their own thing."

There was a good range of sleeping arrangements for various size parties. The heating was very effective and useful to us as it was quite cold. The kitchen was quite old but well equipped with plenty of pots & pans, crockery and cutlery. The large dining table was a bonus - able to do a jigsaw and eat from the table at the same time. Could do with another shower/bathroom for a large parties. We enjoyed our week and would return again - hopefully when the weather was a bit warmer.

  • "Cottage was amazing and the view was stunning ."

We didn’t want to leave. Now we are back home we miss everything about it, especially all our garden friends , the geese, the ducks, the peacocks. Only thing missing was a local shop for anything you may have forgotten. We arranged a delivery from Morrison’s but we still forgot few things. The local pub, a short walk away was nice, we had couple meals in there. The old cart house is definately one we would like to return to some time.

The cottage was fab for our extended family of ten with plenty of room for everyone. Our twin grandsons absolutely loved having all the farm animals around them and the freedom to explore everywhere. We would definitely recommend this cottage.

The cottage is set in the most beautiful landscape you could imagine. The owners are just next door running a very busy farm. They work tirelessly but nothing is too much for them so thank you to Andy, Lee and family. The accommodation is arranged so that for 10 people or 2 families there is some degree of privacy. The cottage has all the features you would need for a vacation and everything has been very well considered. We will be back as soon as we can!!

  • "The cottage was beautiful, with fantastic views!"

Almost everything we needed was provided. The cottage was cozy and well presented. Would be fantastic in the summer, with a nice short walk to the local pub only 5 minutes away. There’s lots of different animals around which was great to see... they thought the sheep coming to see them at the window was great! The cottage is dog friendly with stone floors at the entrance, which is great for drying them off after a walk. Lots of parking space and a great outdoor seating area (although it wasn’t warm enough for us to use it!)

  • "We spent a great holiday over Christmas at the Old Cart House with extended family."

It was lovely to arrive to a decorated Christmas tree and a bottle of wine waiting! The cottage was a great for the 7-10 of us and 2 dogs - everything is comfortable but also dog/kid friendly (e.g. easy clean carpets). The communal living / dining / kitchen area was great to allow everyone to be together while cooking etc. The open fire was amazing! The location is wonderful, very remote and beautiful, on a road that doesn't go very much further up the valley, so very little traffic. Nevertheless Morrisons found us with our big Christmas food order and its not too far to driver further afield. Luckily it wasn't icy though as that could have been tricky. We had a great day out in Whitby. The pub in the village, the Feversham Arms, is highly recommended, for the food and the really friendly atmosphere, and we really enjoyed their Christmas eve quiz! Only minor complaints would be that the fridge was a bit small (though as it was winter we could chill drinks etc outside), there was no cafetiere or corkscrew (luckily we came prepared with our own) and a little more cutlery would be useful.

Great walking off the doorstep. Friendly, welcoming owners and fascinating sheep and domestic fowl all around us. The huge turkey a particular favourite. Wi-Fi excellent, no mobile phone signal. We appreciated the welcoming wine, milk and biscuits. We couldn't find a cafetiere but there is a pod coffee machine. Otherwise this house has everything you need. The perfect place to get away from it all and enjoy pure air and no light pollution. We will be back.

We used it as a base to hike the NE portions of the Cleveland Way Excellent experience The only extremely minor issue was that the cutting knives weren’t sharp and we had to resort to jacknives. :). We’ll be back if circumstances permit.

  • "The Old Carthouse in Farndale is a lovely place to stay."

It is spacious, has beautiful views and has pretty much everything you could ask for including baby gates for the stairs which I thought was a nice touch. Its central location in the moors, offers a good place to use as a base for day trips out with plenty to do within an hour’s drive of the accommodation. I would highly recommend this ‘cottage’. The only little thing I would suggest is either a knife sharpener and/or a serrated knife.

The animals on the farm around the cottage were beautiful to wake up to on a morning. We would all love to return to the cottage again! Our only note to make was the amount of toilet roll left was not near enough for a family of 10, with us being there for christmas we didnt plan on making any shopping trips. Being part of a working farm it was great to see the animals as well. There were six of us with ample room, but even with 8 adults and 2 children, plus a cot there would still be plenty of room. • "The property was not really suitable for very small children."

There were two stone steps up to the kitchen/sitting room. One twin bedroom was situated above the kitchen/sitting area with its own separate steep staircase. The layout of the bedrooms I don't believe was accurately described by yourselves. The situation of the cottage was stunning but we were unable to access any public footpaths within walking distance of the cottage even though there seems to be one clearly marked on the ordnance survey map. This maybe this is something you may like to take up with the owners as it would be a bonus to be able to walk a dog without having to take it in a car. I appreciate that this is a working farm with livestock but your description regarding walking from the cottage as 'close by' was rather vague. This is an area of Yorkshire unknown to us and we shall certainly return but not to this cottage.
