  • "Very quirky cottage."

Wood burner was just perfect due to weather Couple of issues. Lack of parking. Felt overwhelmed with the amount of ornaments and trinkets throughout the property. Cutlery could do with an update as most knives wouldn’t cut butter! Julie (the cleaner) was very friendly and helpful.

  • "Really enjoyed our short stay at this cottage."

A quiet location but just off the main high street two minutes walk from the local shops, pubs and restaurants. The cottage was well equipped, clean and comfortable. For six people another small armchair in the lounge to replace the wooden chair would have been nice. Only 4 chairs around dining table but we brought two down from bedrooms so no real problem. Parking at the cottage was not available but a lovely free car park just yards from the cottage. Very good value for money holiday would recommend.

no phone number to contact anyone. phone number on key ring was for an estate agents who had sold the property, ideally replace key ring as this is confusing. we were also unable to turn on the television until Sunday, no instructions as to where to turn on. owner contacted through Sykes on Monday re hot water, we were then told where emersion heater was. Owner called electrician, no one ever came. there were also opened jars of food in the cupboards and fridge on our arrival. the bed linen in the 2 rooms upstairs had dark hairs on the sheets, used our own linen cottage itself was lovely but more information and contact details would be beneficial

  • "After reading the bad reviews about this cottage, we still went ahead and booked as the location was perfect and as we were the first ones in after lockdown, we thought there had been plenty of time to address the problems reported."

When we arrived, we found the quirky cottage pleasant, it seemed to be clean but after further inspection the kitchen, cultery, plates, cups etc, doors, light switches and in the corners of the rooms we're dirty. We didn't feel it followed the covid expectations but gave it a clean and carried on. There are a lot of breakable objects around the cottage which we had to move as we had 2 dogs and 3 kids. The extractor fan over the oven didn't work(had been mentioned in another review) so the kitchen became quite smokey when cooking. We also noticed non of the electrical items had been pat tested. It took a while to work out where everything was as there was only one laminated info sheet. All the cottages we've stayed in before have left a welcome pack, milk, bottle of wine, dog biscuits etc which is a lovely touch, this didn't. The first night me and my husband were bit on our legs, we thought it was bed bugs which maybe was common in old properties. The second night my daughter was bit and so we're we again. My husband inspected our mattress and found a flea! We checked our dogs, which I had treated before we came, but couldn't find any. We checked the whole property and found they were living on the sofa in the living room. We were bit every night after and so we're the rest of the children. Apart from not being able to sleep at night we tried to not let it spoil our holiday. On returning home and after having to wash absolutely everything, treat the dogs and spray everything I rang Sykes to make them aware. After to weeks I've still not had any feedback. We've been staying in Sykes cottages for a few years now and have always had outstanding experiences and the cottages have been exceptional. It's such a shame that after all the bad reviews on this property nothing has been done to resolve the issues. I really hope the people booked in for the rest of the year don't have the same experience as we did.

Thank you for taking the time to leave feedback, this is very important to us. Following your feedback the property has been thoroughly checked and there was no evidence of any fleas, the property was sprayed and sanitised anyway. If you had voiced your concerns during your stay we would have tried to resolve any issues swiftly. Property Owner

The only think lacking in the kitchen was some decent sharp knives. The place was clean, the beds comfy, interesting historical features and a great fireplace to cosy around after some lovely blustery walks along the coastline. Definitely recommend.

The cottage was very homely cosy and warm. There is a guest sign in for Netflix and wi fi was good. The immediate area is run down but places nearby have beautiful beaches,Skinninggrove and Saltburn on sea Fantastic beaches for the dogs. Across from the co op there is a great shop for bread, pies etc and a good takeaway breakfast, The tiger inn did a lovely evening meal. West end road did the best fish and chips we now know what a splash is . Just what we needed a break from COVID.

  • "Despite recent feedback about the cottage from others we found it to be lovely, quirky and very comfortable stay."

The cottage was located just off the Main Street which was peaceful but close enough to nip to the shop if we needed anything. Also it isn’t too far from beaches and the countryside. Inside the cottage we struggled to get the en-suite shower to heat but this didn’t bother us as we all shared the main bathroom downstairs. Also the cottage could do with a washing machine if in the future they decided to upgrade, but that didn’t deter us from booking. The heating in the cottage was easy to use and warmed the cottage in no time at all. We did have the option of using the log burner but we didn’t need it as it was lovely and warm, this is a lovely feature for the cottage. Overall a lovely stay with everything we needed and we would definitely book again. Thank you

  • "This is by far the worst property I have stayed in after years of using sykes cottages."

To begin the extractor fan for the oven was not working which made cooking difficult considering most of the windows cannot be opened. The rope bannister for the stairs is coming out the wall which forced my arthritic wife to climb on her hands and knees to get up the stairs which the owners seemed not bothered about. Also, there was small amounts of damage elsewhere in the property such as the fire hanging off the wall which we had to put back on which is an obvious fire hazard the owners also seem to think is unimportant. We had tried to contact the owner regarding if there was a washing machine and fridge at the property, (there was not a washing machine) Sykes also tried which I can only assume the owners ignored considering what happened at the end of my 'holiday'. What astounded me most was that the owner left me an abusive voicemail threatening to have sykes 'Deal with us' and after a further call it was explained that my family had left crumbs under the bed and the top of the cooker dirty. I do not understand exactly what the owner wished from our conversation except the chance to give me some more verbal abuse. I have since spoken with sykes and was told that the owners are not allowed to use customers private phone numbers for these reasons especially to abuse their customers. To conclude a terrible property that reflects the people who own it. I would also warn anybody who is thinking of using this property to stay away and read the other comments that I think reflect my own experience.

  • "The cottage was well equipped, comfortable and the bedroom sizes were great."

It was a lovely idea to have a “doggie bedroom”. My only negatives would be that: there is no outdoor area, minimal room to hang things after being out for the day if sandy/wet and the Wi-fi was not good in the bedroom furthest from the router. It is a good location for exploring the nearby area and we enjoyed our stay

Only think to say slightly negative is when we were there they could really do with a few extra mugs and cutlery could really do with an upgrade. but loved it and already booked and counting days to our return.

  • "Nice little cottage close to Saltburn-by-the-sea and Staithes."

Whitby is also not too far away to visit by car. We had a night in Saltburn and used the taxi service J&P taxis. Loftus had couple of pubs, no where really to eat in the location though. Great for just a few nights stay. One downside to the cottage, that I would suggest needs looking at are the showers. You cannot use both showers at the same time because they both cut out. This kind of defeats the object of having a main bathroom and an en-suite, especially when 6 people are trying to get ready. The bedding in the bedroom with the en-suite needs changing. The quilt is very thin and doesn’t fit the double quilt, it feels like a single quilt in a double cover. The radiator in this room also doesn’t work so a thicker quilt in the winter is essential because it’s a very cold room. Hand soap and a full washing up liquid in the property would be a nice touch, especially for just a few nights stay. The current frying pan is not big enough to make a full meal for 6 people. There aren’t enough sharp knives if you would like to make a full meal. The property could also do with more drinking glasses. We had to buy plastic cups to drink out of. When spending nearly £800 for a 3 night NYE trip I would expect better facilities in the property. Overall a great stay but could be improved with a few adjustments.

  • "The cottage was indeed a character cottage and full of charm but in need of some TLC as a letting."

It's in a good location near amenities and good walks but not as homely as we would have liked compared to other properties we have stayed in . Here are some points: 1. The property felt a bit damp when we first arrived and after a long journey was not welcoming. Apparently there had been a problem with the heating. It would have made such a difference after a long journey and arriving in the dark to have had a bit of warmth in the place. This was particularly the case in the bedroom with the ensuite bathroom where we understood later that the radiator had been disconnected. If we had known this we wouldn't have chosen to sleep in it -- as it was we found a small electric heater but this was not overly effective and we were concerned about how safe it was as it was quite old looking. 2. The bedding was very very dated and past its best. The duvet in the room without any heating was particularly thin and inadequate. The mattresses were very very soft as were the pillows. Nothing that a trip to IKEA wouldn't sort fairly cheaply. 3. The kitchen was full of quaint pots eg. 3 trifle bowls and 2 massive egg storage pots, baked egg pots but there were only 3 decent sized mugs and only one kitchen knife ( a bread/carving knife). We ended up in ASDA buying a set of knives, cutlery ( the table knives weren't really up to a roast) and a couple of pyrex bowls as well as a sizeable pan. The place was advertised for 6 but not kitted out for 6.The main utensils were also lacking. 4. Some of the electrics were questionable - the outside light didn't work, the socket to the right of the cooker was loose, the bedside light in the main bedroom was broken and the main light in the bedroom down the steps stopped working. 5. It would have been nice to have had a welcome pack for our arrival - other companies provide a booklet with up to date information about the property and the local area ( the leaflets in the basket in the entrance were all old). We did find a laminated sheet after a couple of days in the magazine rack but this was out of date as it described a fridge/freezer in the entrance way which no longer existed. A nice touch at Christmas and provided in other properties is a small hamper - even a local packet of biscuits and a welcome note is a nice touch. It was nice to have a basket of logs and firelighters. 6. We would have liked access to a hoover and an ironing board - there was an iron but no board. 7. Bin/rubbish - we managed to sort this out but instructions would have been helpful. 8. Car parking - better directions about the parking would have been helpful especially as we arrived in the dark. The description of the parking outside the cottage was not accurate and was actually at the side - we guessed this was OK and a lady who helps look after the cottage reassured our son the next day that it was. Sykes were good with communication and booking etc but the property was disappointing especially for the cost.

  • "This is a beautiful cottage, situated in a quiet part of the city of Loftus."

The furnishings are gorgeous & displayed just as they are on the website. The beds are extremely comfortable, as are the sofas in the TV room. The TV & wifi work well & are extremely easy to use. The kitchen was well stocked, with all the crockery, cutlery, pots and pans & even extras like electric grills. The co-op is nearby within 2 mins walking distance & is very well stocked. We travelled by rail & had no car, but bus services to Whitby, Saltburn & Middlesborough depart regularly from nearby. Overall, a beautiful cottage retreat away from the hustle bustle of large cities.
