  • "Beautiful cottage."

Spotlessly clean and very well equipped and peaceful. The cottage was further away from the beach access and Sandsend than we thought. Shame having to drive through the construction site to reach the cottage but all workers were very polite in giving us access. Looks like the whole area will be wonderful when completed.

  • "Have spoken to owners."

Cottage fabulous. However, being in the middle of a massive construction site was absolutely ridiculous. Sykes should have warned us and offered a refund prior to us travelling. Entrance and exit from the site was a nightmare. This was not within the owners remit. I would like an official reply from Sykes please. The cottages should be shut whilst the multi million pound development is undertaken. I look forward to Sykes reply.

  • "We had a brilliant time - weather hot for 6 out of 7 days, beautiful cottage - everything we needed and more at the cottage and owners were lovely!"

Great location and very relaxing. Everything had been thought of to make your stay comfortable and the added touches of bed linen, towels, welcome pack, tea towels, to name a few things, were greatly appreciated. Owners were clearly very keen to know if there were any issues, and wanted everything to be perfect for our stay. We were very sad to leave, and would love to return.

  • "Tumble dryer useless."

Plaster fell from ceiling. TVs in bedrooms kitchen did not work. Insufficient bins per number of cottages. Distance to beach understated. No access. To grounds and gardens which were in fact a building site with a number of checkpoints. Clearly there was noise from building works.

  • "We were called by the owner 15 minutes before arrival after driving 5 hours to be told there was building works on site at the cottage!"

So as we have stayed at this cottage before we were extremely disappointed to arrive to this!! The owner asked if Sykes had informed us of this building works they had not. If we had know we would of chosen elsewhere, we had paid a lot of money to stay on a building site as far as we are concerned, we wanted to have dinner at the hotel that was being renovated, also to use their spa etc again more disappointment. The cottage had stains on the bedroom carpet, and on the furniture not very nice and it smelt of dogs! I personally have recently become a widow and was looking forward to the break! But this was not what I would call a relaxing place to stay!! We are very interested to hear your feedback on our comments as this we feel is very unacceptable! I shall be putting a review online also pictures.

Hi Lorraine Firstly, to address your point regarding the building works, all we can say is that although you have had to drive past the building works which are part of a £100m renovation of the hotel, the cottage, once you drive through is nestled amongst other similar cottages and out of sight of the works. Unfortunately, we have no control or say on how the building works are progressed, or when the superb facilities will be available once its re-opened, but we are sure that once it does then the overall site experience will improve. To address your next points, we are the new owners of this cottage, and as such have insisted on excellent levels of cleanliness, which so far have been met, however, like any establishment there will be occasional accidents, spillages etc that will cause staining to fabrics etc. We are addressing these at every opportunity, and always looking at ways to improve the facilities, such as the replacement of flooring, furniture etc, but hope you will appreciate that these things take time, and is why, for the time being our focus is on high cleanliness and gradual improvements when and where we can. We are sorry about the ‘doggy smell’, we are a dog friendly cottage as there are wonderful surroundings to take dogs for walks etc., so inevitably, especially if you don’t have a pet some people can be more sensitive than others, but again, we make sure that the cottage is as clean as possible and to eliminate any odours as much as we can. We are sincerely sorry that you didn’t find the facilities on site that you might have expected when you made your booking with the previous owner, and hope that one day in the not too distant future you would consider a return to see how different things will be once the hotel renovation works are concluded, but in the meantime, thank you for your feedback, as much as we are extremely disappointed with the review, we will take what we can from this and look for any improvements that can be made in the short to medium term. Kind Regards Tony and Paula Property Owner

  • "A very clean and comfortable cottage."

Two lovely bedrooms, small kitchen/diner and good sitting room. If taking a dog there is a walk right outside although we couldn’t walk to the beach as there were cows in a field on the way. The only downside was having to drive through a building site to access the property but it wasn’t really a problem.

Hi Sarah Thank you for your valuable feedback. We are glad that the building work’s didn’t spoil your stay, the works are part of a huge upgrade to the facilities on site, and are forecast to be completed soon. Thank you for your patience and understanding, and for choosing Clematis Cottage for your break. Tony & Paula Property Owner

  • "The cottage is beautifully decorated and has all the amenities you need."

As mentioned by others, the tv in the lounge is tricky to navigate. We couldn’t work out the channels even though there was a guide left by previous guests. The beds were very comfortable, we slept really well! We would definitely book again.

  • "Had a lovely stay at Clematis cottage despite the weather."

Was nice to return to a warm stunning cottage after walking on the beaches in the windy weather. Only thing I would suggest is to have a mop so we could have cleaned the hall tiles when our dog had walked in. Overall an excellent lovely comfortable cottage in lovely surroundings .

  • "Great cottage in a lovely secluded location."

Well equipped and quality bedding and towels. A lovely welcome pack on arrival. We visited in November when the paths into Sandsend were quite muddy as you would expect for the time of year so would love to revisit in the summer.
