  • "The cottage is beautiful and situated in a lovely location."

Sleights has a fabulous butcher and fish and chips shop. We only visited The Plough, however the food was outstanding and great value. The cottage was what we needed for a lovely break with the dog. We would have appreciated better quality garden furniture and a bbq. The cottage’s garden would benefit from a little T.L.C Would definitely recommend

  • "An enjoyable week."

The cottage is in a perfect position for exploring the whole area. In easy access of all facilities in the village too. Beautiful well equipped kitchen and very comfortable bed. The Juliet balcony with the french window was perfect in the extremely hot weather we had!!! A hamper filled with Yorkshire goodies was a lovely welcome gift. We are both disabled and the bathroom was spacious with wonderful roll top bath and easy access shower. The little enclosed side garden was especially enjoyed by our little dog. Thankyou so much.

  • "This was our second time staying in this cottage."

We have stayed in many Sykes cottages over the past 8 years and this is the only one that we have returned to. It is a real home from home and the owners ensure it is equipped with everything you need. It is located in a lovely friendly village close to Whitby and an excellent base to tour the Yorkshire coast. I would highly recommend this property.

  • "We had a lovely stay at Eskside Cottage, it was really clean and so well stocked for our stay."

The village and cottage had a lovely atmosphere and provided a great base for our holiday. There was everything we needed and the welcome basket was a gesture we really appreciated. The area was really quiet and it was easy to park right outside the cottage. The new bathroom was lovely and overall all the rooms were comfortable. Although this is a matter of preference, the back bedroom had a very firm mattress and the stairs were very steep (stair gates were provided though which offered lots of comfort with having our son there) which is why I rated comfort a 4*. Thank you to Rebecca and Sami for a chance to say in such a lovely place - this was our son’s very first holiday and having such a great cottage to return to each day really made it special.

  • "We all thoroughly enjoyed our stay."

! It was our first family break with my 17month old granddaughter and the facilities, cleanliness and location was fantastic. The only thing why I marked comfort* slightly lower was that I found the mattress too firm but that's just a personal preference everything was top quality and the hamper was a very welcome, lovely surprise. We will definitely be back and have been telling our family and friends what an exceptional holiday home it is. Also it was extremely helpful that when I rang Sykes holiday cottages my calls were answered by helpful and pleasant people and my queries were rectified promptly with no fuss, which added to a thoroughly pleasant experience. Thank you to you all and we look forward to returning again one day hopefully in the not too distant future

  • "This is a lovely cottage in a fantastic location."

It was our second stay here and probably won’t be our last as it is a great base for when we visit family in Whitby. The cottage is warm, comfortable, well equipped and quiet. It’s a perfect bolt hole in a stunning part of the country.

  • "Perfect cottage for a Winter getaway to the Whitby Coast, our first holiday with our little dog who seemed to settle in well."

I would suggest that the outside grassy space is improved or at least some stepping stones added across the grass to get to the bins but this wasn't a massive issue for us. I'd also suggest some spray cleaner provided in the bathroom for guest use but again not a massive issue but good hygiene practice, not costly to provide and been provided in other properties we've stayed in the area.. I would also suggest a larger duvet for the pushed together twin beds as it wasn't quite big enough for us and also the mattresses seemed to roll you into the middle suggesting they might need turning or replacing. I'd suggest having two full size single beds zip and link. Overall though we had a great holiday, enjoyed the wood burner a couple of nights as a novelty but the central heating was very toasty anyway. Perfectly located around the corner from the pub and fish & chip shop. My suggestions are just to make the property even better.

  • "We really loved the cottage and location."

It was very comfortable and clean. We would definitely consider going there again. However there were a few things we thought could be improved. In the bathroom the towel rail kept falling off and the water pressure in the shower was very low. We were disappointed with the grassed area in the garden which was more moss and mud than grass. This meant our dog would not go out there. The microwave in the kitchen had two front feet missing so you couldn’t open the door without scratching the worktop. It also couldn’t be set and we had to switch it off at the mains to stop it.

  • "Whilst we were very happy with the cottage and were extremely comfortable, there were one or two issues we would like to point out to yourselves/the owner."

1/ The lid on the pedal bin in the kitchen was broken 2/ The cold water tap on the basin in the bathroom was loose, so kept moving when turning on/off. 3/ There was no mattress cover on the zip link bed in the back bedroom (this was not noticed until the day of departure when stripping the bed). Apart from the above issues we had a very nice 3 night break. Thank you.

  • "We had a problem with the hot water and heating on the Saturday evening."

This was dealt with promptly and efficiently by Stuart (think that is his name) from Sykes cottages. He contacted the owners who live locally and after visiting us and checking, arranged for an engineer to call while we were out and the problem was resolved. Stuart phoned us back to ensure that all was now well. Considering this was early on a Sunday morning I think this is excellent service from Sykes cottages. The photograph of the back garden on the website is very misleading as it implies there is a large back garden with a wonderful view for use by the people renting the cottage. Unfortunately this is not the case and the only garden is a small area at the side, which gets very little sun and has uncomfortable chairs to use.

  • "Lovely cottage, decorated and furnished beautifully."

Spotlessly clean and provided everything you would need. The only downside is the bathroom has a shower curtain and not a shower screen but that’s just my personal preference. Lovely area, close to Whitby and quite central to visit other places such as Robin Hoods Bay and Goathland.

  • "Lovely homely cottage with comfy beds."

Great kitchen and equipment. Ideal location to get to Whitby and surrounding area. Photos on website are a little misleading regarding the garden. Makes it appear that the rear garden is available but unfortunately only a small section at the side is usable which had little sun.
