"As we have used Sykes for many years for our family Christmas get together we are used to the high standards of accommodation, however in this occasion the cottage was sadly lacking."
Firstly the Christmas tree was stuck in a corner, no decorations and no lights. There was a couple of bits of tinsel draped over a cabinet and a couple of pieces in the kitchen but not what are used to.
The small wall lights in the living room didn’t work nor did the one in the downstairs bedroom.
We opened the small window in the kitchen and it almost fell off as the top bracket is broken. There are no outside lights which is dangerous as there are steps to get into the property.
There are no full sets of glasses. The double mattress in the upstairs bedroom was of poor quality and had a dip in the middle. No wardrobe space in the twin room.
The owners father came one day and kept asking us if we wanted the radiators turned off as he was concerned that we had left a bedroom window open end we had the heating on. He actually came twice and was quite forthright that we needed to take the heating off.
All in all just a few minor things although the kitchen window issue is not minor, but enough for us not to book this accommodation again.
Thank you for your feedback. We are sorry to hear that your stay didn't meet the high standards we strive to provide.
Regarding the maintenance items, we always encourage guests to contact us immediately during their stay. Had we been notified about the lightbulbs or the kitchen window, we would have rectified these issues straight away. We also regularly audit our inventory and can confirm there are full sets of glassware provided, as well as several 4 piece sets of occasional glassware for our guest to enjoy.
We would also like to clarify the interaction with my father. He was on-site at a neighbouring building for an emergency and was asked to clear up some confusion regarding the bin collection. He simply mentioned the window and to ensure the heating was running efficiently with the windows closed. We were disappointed to hear that this helpful gesture resulted in a difficult exchange, as we always aim to maintain a friendly and respectful environment for our guests and neighbors alike.
Regarding the festive decorations, we appreciate your perspective; we aim for a style that respects all preferences, but we will certainly take your comments into account for next year.
We value the feedback of all our guests as we continue to improve our holiday let.
Best regards,
Shona

"Excellent property in a peaceful village location."
Bedrooms were a great size and have plenty of items (cutlery, glassware, childrens tiys, etc.) in the house made things so much easier to just settle in. Had a few challenges getting the temperature just right but didnt cause major problems. Would happily stay again.

The only thing I would suggest is that the downstairs bathroom could do with a shower handset on the bath but other than that it’s all good and we really enjoyed our stay

Parking is on the road opposite the cottage not off road parking as described in the listings very difficult to cross the road with luggage and shopping the road is very busy to cross if you are elderly. some Windows difficult to open and close had to lift the window frame to close also due to the accumulation of dirty and debris in the frame .wardrobes dirty had to clean, there was a bad egg smell in the front bedroom, No BBQ on arrival had to contact owner to retrieve said item from shed still unable to us as it was very dirty and rusty had to purchase disposable one. Overall very disappointed

"We enjoyed our stay at Wayside, everything we needed was there."
The only thing that I found awkward was trying to figure out using the cooker as we are all gas at home. We were very lucky with the weather as it was very hot each day and we enjoyed sitting out watching the sheep and chickens.

"Spacious, comfortable and clean cottage."
We were 5 adults and had plenty of room. Everyone found their beds comfortable and the showers powerful. However, the downstairs room had a musty smell, especially the bedding which was quite unpleasant and permeated our clothing , even after returning home.
A pleasant village but we got a frosty reception at the pub and were told they only serve food to local residents on Monday and Tuesday. We went to the Wheatsheaf in Egton where the food was delicious and the welcome was warm .

Beautiful views to the front and back of the property. This area had so many footpaths to choose from I was able to find a lot of dog friendly ones. One of the nicest cottages we have stayed in.

"Having stayed in many properties, mostly Sykes, we can safely say that Wayside is one of the very best; a very comfortable house with a great garden and outlook."
The villages in this area of the North York Moors, including Glaisdale, are a grand base for walking and touring the National Park and the coast.
Our only suggestion would be a floor mop and cleaning materials in the bathrooms and kitchen for ongoing housework.

Impressive amenities with many thoughtful details added by the owner to ensure excellent provision for all who stay ( including the dog ).
Plenty of space for six people plus dog and a lovely garden with great views. We felt very welcome.

"We had a most wonderful week at Wayside."
The cottage was beautiful and roomy, warm and comfortable with the added bonus of the wood burner. The kitchen was well appointed with everything we needed and the downstairs bedroom most comfortable. Wayside is dog friendly with bowls and doggy towel available. The one small thing, which I did mention to the owner was maybe upgrading the TV to a smart telly. With most people having access to subscription services I do think it would be a positive especially on long winter nights. Parking is tight at the back of the property but we parked on the main road right opposite the cottage which was much more convenient. Wayside is a delight and we have already booked another stay.

"Lovely cottage in a fabulous place and easy to get to lots of different places ."
Local pub had lovely food and were friendly too - The cottage was good size for our party of 6 and little dog . Great back garden but no outside light which would’ve have been helpful for letting the dog out in the dark ! Surprised there was no welcome pack . Few light bulbs out and the lighting in the living room / dining room could’ve done with a ceiling light or a standard lamp as we couldn’t see to do jigsaws . We had a lovely stay but due to severe weather forecasts had to leave a day early which was a shame but the right decision.

"Wayside cottage is beautiful has to be the best we have stayed in."
It was spotless, which in the past has let other cottages down. We got snowed in for two days but as cottage so comfortable it didn't matter too much. Would definitely stay again but maybe at a warmer time of year. Pub nearby which did a lovely Sunday roast and it was warm and welcoming.

"Wayside Cottage is very comfortable and pleasant."
Fully secure garden for our little dog, a few doggie accessories available like spare lead, bowls, towels which we used (the latter).
Nicely decorated, well equipped kitchen. Very spacious rooms, ideal for mixed couples as it had 2 en suites and downstairs bathroom. Great for families too. Amazing views from every window, beautiful in autumn.
Good walks from property and pub in walking distance. Small supermarket nearby for those immediate items like milk, bread etc No welcome pack.
We enjoyed our weekend stay and would recommend staying at Wayside and hope to book again

"Wayside is an incredible property."
From the outside it looks small but inside it’s extremely roomy with three large double bedrooms (one has twin beds but could easily fit another couple of beds as it’s so big). Unlike some holiday cottages, this feels like a home from home with beautiful furnishings in the large living room making it so cosy. The kitchen is well equipped meaning you don’t need to take anything with you - nothing has been overlooked by an obviously very thoughtful owner. I’ve left the best until last - the views!! Spectacular views from every window in the house and garden, which backs onto a large field of free range chickens (we bought a dozen of their eggs and they were so tasty.
There is a pub serving good food a few steps away and a railway station 2 minutes walk away that takes you to Whitby via some of the local villages. I cannot recommend this property enough. Thank you for sharing your beautiful home with us.
