  • "This cottage was perfect for us and our dog."

The location is quiet and peaceful even though its on a working farm. Very well quipped and spotlessly clean. Everything provided for. The hosts are lovely and friendly and welcoming and nice to know they’re on hand if there were any problems. We had a lovely stay and will definitely be booking for next year.

  • "We stayed at Summerfield Farm cottage last autumn and came straight back this year, which says straight away that we like it!"

The cottage is clean, the rooms are spacious and uncluttered, the ambiance is pleasant and homely. The kitchen has a comfortable amount of workspace and plenty of cupboard room. Although the cottage is next to the owners' home, the windows all face away over the fields/down the drive, and the cottage garden is on the side away from the owners' windows and door, so one has a feeling of privacy and quiet. The garden has a table, chairs and a parasol for sitting out in fine weather. The views from the bedrooms, by the way, are delightful. Just one thing to be aware of is that the stairs are steep. It won't be a problem for most adults, and I think that the owners provide a safety gate for toddlers, but something to consider if someone is elderly or frail?

  • "We've had a wonderful time at the Summer field farm cottage with the surrounding area comfortable and relaxing, ideal retreat to those seeking rejuvenate from busy lifestyle."

However, the simple touches like resources and better communication could be better. We were asked by the guest book to strip the bedding on our departure for example and put it in the laundry basket, yet we couldn't find any, however we have looked. There weren't enough supplies of toilet tissues either and ended up buying our own. The same applied to kitchen towels or wet towels where there were only few left. We didn't mind to put the cottage as we found it but would appreciate on our holiday to supply with resources to do the job at least. Also, being it a farm it advertised in the guest book, guests could purchase fresh eggs, but was told there weren't any due to owner having family members visitors and that she'll let me know the next day. I didn't receive any notification. Small touches like that would make a big difference to the overall satisfaction.

The hot tap in downstairs bathroom is loose. The skirting board on entrance to living room is rotten with a hole in it. Upstairs bathroom small light above mirror isn't working. Downstairs bathroom smells a bit of mould. Apart from these little things we enjoyed our stay.

The hosts were friendly helpful and on hand if we needed but not obtrusive. The farm and surrounding land is excellent for walking our dog who thoroughly enjoyed running free in the fields. The cottage is extremely well stocked and instructions & guidance is some of the best we have seen. We know the area very well as we are locals (in between house moves) so we really loved being able to relax in this wonderful setting at a stressful time for us. The cottage was very spacious for the 2 of us , had a lovely cosy open fire, 2 bathrooms and a second bedroom which we used to store our interim belongings, would have stayed an extra week but unsurprisingly the cottage is fully booked, would highly recommend

  • "We found the cottage snug and cheerful on wild, wet November days and nights."

The batterie de cuisine is admirably complete, clearly stocked by someone who realises that holidaymakers really do sometimes want to cook! Sufficient knives, chopping boards, big enough saucepans etc. Good-sized rooms throughout. When we had a temporary problem with the hot water, Fiona responded very quickly and came round to reset the controls. I will mention here (NOT an issue with the cottage, but with the email I received from Sykes) that the directions for finding Summerfield website are unnecessarily complicated. Luckily I contacted Fiona in advance, and she gave me crystal clear, accurate and simple directions.

  • "The ambience of this holiday cottage is really relaxing."

If you’re looking for ultra-modern it might not be for you, but if you want rural slower-paced life, watching animals and birds, this would be ideal. This was our second visit. The kids demanded to return because there is great tyre swing in the farm yard, and two friendly outdoor farm cats. This year there were also chickens that enthusiastically sought us out for bird seeds and oats. The cottage is really conveniently located for days out under twenty minutes’ drive away: Riveaulx Terrace, Riveaulx Abbey, Byland Abbey, Helmsley Castle, Helmsley Walled Garden, Nunnington Hall, North York Moors Railway and more. We would warmly recommend the National Birds of Prey Centre in Duncombe Park.

No, the kitchen was a bit cramped, the upstairs shower room a bit narrow, and we couldn’t find enough tall glasses in the cupboard. But did we love it and would be come again? Yes, absolutely. It was such a relaxing place with a pleasant sheltered garden. Best of all were the things that weren’t in the listing. There was some play equipment in the yard and the boys absolutely loved the tyre swing. There were some very friendly fluffy cats around to stroke. And there is a small quiet airfield close by and one of the pilots showed off his skills doing loop the loops and dives. Lots to do close by. The kids enjoyed the adventure play area at Castle Howard the best. Had a lovely time here.

The location was perfect for us as it was peaceful but not too far from walking/places to see and a shop in Kirkbymoorside. The cottage was well equipped and had everything we needed and they clearly consider Covid cleaning between stays. My only slight negative comments would be that some rooms are starting to look like they could do with a lick of paint and also maybe a clearer signage of the main farmhouse as the few quiet caravans that were there kept getting mixed up and trying to come pay us for their plot! This wouldn’t put us off staying here again though.
