Quakers Cottage

Location was ideal for visiting local towns and coves, and all accessible by buses which were brilliant, with bus stops for either direction just yards from the cottage.

Saved driving around looking and paying for parking which could be quite expensive.

Quaker Cottage was very comfortable, spacious and well equipped, so we had a lovely stay.

It is in a good position for visiting other areas.

Lovely clean cottage in a good place for Runswick Bay and Staithes.

Owners very friendly and helpful.

Lovely cottage, perhaps a little dark on the ground floor.

Only downside we found was that the bed (main bedroom) was a little uncomfortable (too soft) and there should be better bedside tables.

Private off-road parking. Co-op is about 1 mile away . Staithes is 1.5 miles away. Local pub has 2 real ales. Good Local butchers anc chippy. Good base for exploring this part of north Yorkshire.

Weve stayed at Quaker Cottage so many times over the years.

Its our favourite holiday home in this area. Greeted by Marian (James mum) she is so lovely, We had yet again, a lovely stay, the weather was perfect! Arrived in a heatwave but a few cloudy days which was a welcome relief! visited this time, Staithes fossillng and the free museum. Visited National Trust Ormesby Hall very interesting and peaceful. Walked most mornings down to Port Mulgrave the residents we met were so friendly. (You can walk on from there to Staithes or Sandend and Whitby the other way, along the beautiful Cleveland Way ) we didnt this time. But did walk a fare bit up the top. Visited Whitby, Mulgrave Woods, Sandend and cheeky pint at the Ellerby Inn. We will be back thank you James for a great stay.

Having received a warm welcome from the owner's parents whose house is adjacent to Quakers Cottage, we felt at home straight away.

The cottage was clean, comfortable and well equipped. Having a bathroom and a shower room was useful. The cottage is located in Hinderwell, which is a friendly village with an excellent butcher's shop, fish and chip shop and community Hub in the old school. The location of the cottage, on the main street of Hinderwell village, is very convenient both for the village amenities and for the nearby coast at Staithes and Runswick Bay. There is some road noise, especially with the windows open in hot weather, but it did not bother us. The stone building was cool in hot weather and it felt nice and safe when we had an intense thunder storm on the last morning that we were there. We enjoyed our stay and would be happy to book Quakers Cottage again.

Quakers Cottage is a lovely old cottage which is exceptionally clean, with lovely owners who are friendly and helpful.

It is situated close to the bus stops taking you to Staithes,Runswick Bay and Whitby. The nearby Village Hub serves lovely food and cakes. Butchers shop ( owned by the owners of the cottage) sells excellent meat, provisions and newspapers. Nearby Ellerby hotel ( out of the village) serves great food.

Lovely little cottage, bit quirky, but charming.

Some heating and a towel rail in the shower room would add to the comfort. Excellent bus service every 30mins through the village.

The cottage is in need of some love. Whilst the towels smelled clean, they were far from white, and really needed replacing. Upgrading the bedlinen would also be more appealing. It is a shame, as the cottage could be made rather lovely with more care.

We have visited this cottage a few times and as always it was super clean.

The owners (local butchers) are great nothing is to much trouble, the butchers shop supplies the morning paper, general groceries as well as their excellent pies and ready meals. Hinderwell is a very friendly village, you must go to the Hub (community centre) Great lunch and snacks. Good safe parking at the cottage - well equipped and cosy. Chip shop is good too.

Really nice layout. Very comfortable beds. A really nice downstairs shower. Comfortable seating in the lounge and dining area. Nice views from upstairs windows.

One of the best cottages we have visited.

Felt so at home. Everything to hand and easy to use. Such comfy beds! Great location. Easy to drive to whitby,sandsend and salt burn. Amazing coastal walks on the door step to Staithes and runswick bay. Yorkshire moors national Park in easy access. Lovely village with a great pub and tea room.

Quaker cottage ticked many boxes for us, we wanted a nice base so we could have a break and visit surrounding places.

This was ideal, warm cottage with a warm atmosphere, we met the owner a few times and she was so friendly and helpful. The shower was brilliant with amazing water pressure that got us going each morning, lovely thick towels provided. Enjoyed our stay.

A comfy warm property ideally situated between Staithes and Runswick Bay with easy access to the coast path and a regular bus service to Whitby.

Off road parking was a big bonus however this wasn’t clear when booking.

This may put some people off staying. Best equipped kitchen in a cottage that we’ve stayed in. Lounge TV a touch on the small side!

All credit to very helpful, friendly owners. The cottage was spotlessly clean - great attention to detail in the cleaning makes all the difference on arrival at holiday cottages and this one certainly hadn’t had any corners cut. Everything needed for a cottage holiday was provided and our stay, sadly, went all too quickly. The village of Hinderwell is very well placed for walks and visits in the area and the village community hub in the old schoolrooms is well worth a visit - lovely, friendly members of the community on hand, excellent coffee and food to eat in or outside, or to take home. The owner’ s butchers, delicious homemade pies and general provisions establishment in the village is definitely worth supporting.

We had a very comfortable and all too short stay at Quakers.

It's a perfect jumping off point for so many fantastic visitor attractions in the area. Luckily the weather held! Could we suggest maybe a few books and games in the property for wet evenings? Otherwise it was lovely - thank you very much.

Didn't realise that the cottage was on a main road until we set off.

Not a problem at all as walls about 2ft thick and road not busy. Well situated for Cleveland Way (1/2 mile away). Bus stop (1/2hrly service) outside cottage - coastal run from Middlesborough to Whitby.. Large garage in use as a utility room with heating- very useful. Comfortable and spotless. Lovely part of Yorkshire - edge of North York Moors.

The cottage is really well presented, very clean and with good facilities.

We were met by James and his mother who welcomed us and were on hand if we needed anything. Its location is ideal for the beautiful resorts of North Yorkshire and walking to Runswick Bay was a bonus. The Wi-Fi wasn’t the best but worked ok (streaming anything wasn’t great). Everything was presented with great attention to detail and the furniture and beds were comfortable. It’s on a main road but the windows save you from most of the noise and it didn’t bother us at all. We had a great time and will return sometime.

Met by friendly owners and made very welcome and nothing was too much trouble. Excellent facilities and less than 100 metres from regular bus services. We enjoyed this special cottage and would love to return.

Spacious ground floor, well laid out. Easy staircase to use and ideal having two bathrooms, one on each floor. Very convenient and accessible private outdoor space; quite a sun-trap and sheltered from any wind. Lovely village with excellent tearoom, shop and chippy. Good access, by car, to plenty of coastal places north and south of Proprietor and his family were very helpful and considerate. Much to commend this holiday accommodation.

A lovely spotlessly clean country style cottage.

Everything you could possibly need is there. Well maintained, pretty decor and comfy beds. We were warmly welcomed on our arrival. A great base for walking to Staithes, Runswick Bay or a bus ride (every 30mins ) to Whitby. A lovely Butchers shop which also sells groceries and papers, coffee shop, fish and chip shop and a couple of pubs a minutes walk down the road. Would thoroughly recommend.

We had a,lovely week and cottage was clean and well equipped.

The only downfall was the large, uncomfortable black plastic sofa which dominated the already small and dark sitting room. The bed had rather uncomfortable pillows . A very useful garage. Overall clean and adequate but not quite to the standard of our previous stays with Sykes.

Comfortable and clean property with every thing you need for your stay in this lovely part of Yorkshire.

The coastal bus service is very convenient with a local stop very near the property. Don't bother queuing for ages at The Magpie in Whitby, the Excelsior Chippy at the top of Staithes is excellent for fish and chips. The directions provided by Sykes to find the property are very confusing with reference to turning down West End Close, well do not !!! If coming from Whitby the property is on the left just after passing West End Close and if you drive past the Bistro as mentioned...well you've missed it all together... coming from the North the property is on the right just before West End Close and you will pass the Bistro coming this way.

A lovely cosy cottage.

Spotlessly clean, warm and well-equipped. The friendly owners live nearby. Hinderwell is well located for exploring nearby coastal villages and the moors. Two pubs, one seafood restaurant, a tea room, and a butcher’s shop are all in walking distance. And there’s a very good bus service to Whitby. Only one minor issue was that the shower wasn’t working during our stay. And the bath took quite a while to fill. But that wasn’t a major problem for us.

The cottage was a lovely retreat it was clean and well equipped.

It was lovely to stay in the village of Hinderwell with Staithes, Runswick bay and Sandsends all in easy reach. The bus service to Whitby is regular every 30 minutes. There are several good pubs serving good value meals. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and would recommend this cottage to anyone wanting a retreat within easy reach of the coast. Our third time of staying at quacker cottage, we love it.

What a fabulous holiday!

The characterful cottage was spotlessly clean and had everything we could possibly need; everything just worked. The garage space was dry and clean and really useful. Being just a 5 minute drive from Runswick Bay made our family trips to the beach effortless. The local family who own the cottage were friendly, helpful and welcoming whilst being careful not to intrude. Despite being near the road, the courtyard and gated driveway gave our young children plenty of safe space. Thank you Quaker’s Cottage!

Cottage was very clean & well equipped.

On a busy main main road and you can constantly hear the road noise day & night. There is no beach within a few minutes walk of this property, you need to go everywhere by car but things are close by. The owners live onsite and are very friendly. The living space is quite cramped for a family, & location dangerous for those with young children.

Quakers cottage is ideally situated for visiting Whitby, Staithes, Sandsend.

The local bus stop is just a few minutes away from the cottage. The cottage is spacious, clean and comfortable, equipped with everything you need. Having two bathrooms was handy. The cottage is owned by the local butcher and I can highly recommend the pies, bacon and sausages. Really enjoyable holiday at Quakers cottage.

Very friendly village, the butchers shop is excellent (butchers own this cottage) They sell newspapers and general provisions as well a credit to the village. The cottage as our previous visits very clean, well equipped, good parking and we will return.

The facilities were excellent and it was spotlessly clean . We stayed over Christmas and the decorations were a lovely touch! We would highly recommend this property and hope to visit again.

Hinderwell is a nice friendly village very well situated for both coast and inland places. The cottage is owned by the local butchers (this is also worth a visit) they sell daily newspapers and general supplies very handy. If you use the bus their is a regular service between Whitby & Middlesbrough, see you next year.

The outside lights were taped over which was a shame as it was dark on an evening.

The WiFi was shocking.parking.needs a rethink as it was difficult to park with the other cars sticking out. As cosy as we remembered tho and we did enjoy our stay

Reviews previous to this one substantiate Quaker's Cottage such that it isn't necessary to repeat praise that those reviews express.

We stayed at the southern end of Hinderwell six years ago when we needed a pet friendly and three bedroom cottage. Hinderwell and Runswick charmed us enough to seek a return and a stay of two weeks. Quaker's Cottage has been the icing on the cake for this stay, thoroughly enjoying the use of our bus passes to spend time in Whitby, Staithes, Saltburn, & Runswick; taking the steam train to Pickering and back. Wonderful!

Just returned from this lovely cottage in the lovely village of hinderwell this cottage has everything you need for your stay, lovely comfy beds and very homely, would definitely recommend and we hope to be returning in the future

Quakers Cottage is a fantastic property.

I can't think of anything wrong with it. Much more spacious than it looks from the outside. Perfectly appointed and in a really excellent location. Clean and very functional.

Lovely cottage that was well situated for access to various interesting places along the coast … Runswick Bay, Whitby, Sandsend and close to the North York Moors too.

Good facilities in the cottage with plenty of room and a useful large attached garage with washing machine that was a good drying area.

We had another wonderful week at Quaker’s Cottage at the end of July.

The cottage is comfortable and well-presented. Hinderwell is a great location- beaches are sandy, accessible and it is excellent that the lifeguards are present. Local shops can provide all the necessities and the tea shop offers great food and friendly service. Thank you. We have booked already for next year.

They also run a great shop that is an asset to the local community selling newspapers, veg and many other things as well as top class meat, you have got to try the pies to good to miss. Hinderwell is a great place to stay very friendly village close to many attractions, well worth a visit.

The hosts were very friendly and welcoming and we would definitely recommend it. The village is in a perfect place for walking some of the Cleveland way, and visiting Whitby and Staithes. There is a great little tea shop close by as well as a butcher/general store and not forgetting the fish and chip shop.

An excellent cottage.

It is well-designed and practical. It is a bit of a tardis, looking smaller from the outside than inside.

This was our second time at Quaker Cottage.

Our previous stay was @ 4 yrs ago in the summer and we loved it, therefore I was a little apprehensive about 1. the weather and 2. that the cottage itself wouldn't be quite as wonderful as the first time. I needn't have worried it's still as wonderful as before, nothings really changed (nothing needed to change) and the three of us had a brilliant time, the dark winter nights just added to the cosiness. Everything about the cottage, location whether walking or driving is perfect for visiting numerous coastal spots, furnishings and comfort everything I could possibly require in a cottage is there, the owner and his mother lovely people and very helpful, parking is no issue and has actually improved since our last visit - you now park by the garage doors. I and possibly more telling my wife could not find anything to fault. We will definitely return, Many Thanks.

Ideally situated for relaxing coastal walks to the north & south, but mind the traffic when crossing from the cottage!

Within easy driving reach of lots of other small beaches & places of interest. Wonderful 'community' tea shop & local art exhibition etc.1 minute away! The owners of the cottage own the local butchers shop (3 minutes walk) providing not only lovely meat, but selling newspapers, milk etc. Thank you for a lovely holiday base.

We have stayed here many times think it's our 5th time, it's our favourite.

It was great to finally have our holiday after covid restrictions lifted. Marian and her son James are lovely the cottage was very clean. We had a wonderful week, our daughter did suffer with hay-fever bad, but Marian kindly got her some local honey which seemed to help. We are looking forward to visiting again. Xx thank you

Although we were aware it was on a main road we did not realise how busy and noisy it could be.

Saying that it was a beautiful cottage and there were some great walks around the area. Would recommend.

Fabulous place made so welcome such a lovely village and so much to do in the local area .

It's a brilliantly located cottage, lots of walking from the door but also on a bus route up and down the coast and easy driving to Heartbeat Country.

The kitchen was really well equipped with plenty of all the basics. Everything was clean and comfortable with handy sized outdoor furniture for chasing the sun around the courtyard garden. Being able to pop into the butcher's shop for tourist info as well as bacon was invaluable for finding the Cleveland Way during a high tide!

Brilliant base for our family holiday a mile away from the amazing Runswick Bay which might be even better than Robin Hoods Bay (and we love it there) pluys found loads of fossils.

Also, owners were great to us both on the phone and face to face. Please update the website as you can park at the property and your site says it is off site... makes a huge difference!!!

Quaker’s Cottage is spotless & well-equipped. Marianne is a lovely lady who takes a lot of pride in the cottage & was ready to help out if we needed anything. Hinderwell is well situated for coastal walks with Staithes, Port Mulgrave & Runswick Bay within easy reach. Saltburn & Whitby an easy drive. James runs the local butcher & we bought bacon, jam, bread & newspapers. I recommend the Badger Hounds for dinner - a 3 minute walk. Was so good we visited 3 times. Also the Seaview Restaurant in Saltburn. Fish & chips in Hinderwell very good also. Despite the new lockdown we had a great time & highly recommend Quaker’s Cottage.

Lovely cottage, warm and comfortable.

The only thing worth mentioning is that the double mattress was rather worn; could have been comfier. Cottage was brilliantly located for exploring Staithes, Whitby, Robin Hood's Bay etc Runswick Bay was walking distance. More recommendations for good pubs would have been appreciated. Owners really friendly.

TV reception very poor.

Having to strip bedding and depart before 9am is not acceptable to.

!! The cottage was immaculate and we had everything we could need. James and his family were very helpful. They own the village butchers shop where we got some yummy bacon and sausage for breakfast. We literally have not a bad word to say.

James and family couldn’t have been more welcoming and helpful.

Check in was very straightforward, cottage was spotless with everything as advertised. Great location for the North York Moors and coast with Port Mulgrave and Runswick Bay both easy walks from the cottage. Visited the local chippie for delicious fish and chips (advance phone orders only due to covid). James is the local butcher and has a wide variety of excellent meat, as well as bread, milk, fruit and veggies etc. from the shop in Hinderwell. If travelling during covid, book pubs in advance- we couldn’t eat in the local as it was booked a week in advance. Would happily stay here again if visiting the area.

Very nice stay, wish to stay again, but a few niggles- No dishwasher, by main road between Whitby and Staithes, taps in bathroom upstairs configured incorrectly. Hope to come back soon.

We had a lovely break at Quaker's Cottage in February despite the best efforts of Storm Dennis.

Welcome basket of wine and snacks was a lovely surprise and much appreciated. Cottage was warm, comfortable and well equipped; ideal location for exploring Yorkshire coast. Would definitely recommend.

We have just had seven very enjoyable days in this cottage ,the owners , marriane and her son James are lovely people making us welcome and making sure we were ok , the family has a shop just up the road selling most food and a butchers There is a lovely pub nearly opposite serving excellent meals , the cottage is in a good position for visiting the coast With a bus stop for both ways outside , the welcome pack with crisps , chocolate, bottle of wine ,milk and soaps was a lovely touch and much appreciated, the last reviewer said the road noise bothered them ,after all it is main rd ,but don’t worry about it ,it is not a Problem , it certainly did not bother us , we had good nights sleep and was very comfortable, so all very good and we hope to return .

The cottage was very comfortable.

On a negative side there where no coat hooks to hang your coats. Plus I think there should be wooden chairs in the dining area instead of the plastic ones which seemed out of character. The parking wasn't actually on site as portrayed in the advertising, but having re-read the description, it was described in the depth of the blurb, and indeed it was only 1 minute away.

This is a lovely comfortable cottage.

It is a good base for exploring both the coast and North Yorkshire Moors. We were made welcome by the owners. However the cottage is right beside a main road, A174. This results in a lot of traffic noise which can be heard inside the cottage even with the windows shut. We found the road was very busy early evening so sitting in the sunny courtyard to relax after a days walking was spoilt by hearing the sound of cars, buses, lorries and bikes zooming past. Unfortunately it was not the quiet country cottage we had hoped for.

We found the cottage was well situated for all the things we wanted to do in the area.

It was clean and comfortable and the Welcome pack was much appreciated as were the fresh flowers. The owners were very friendly and made sure we had everything we needed.

This is a superb cottage which surpassed my expectations.

There was a lovely welcome when we arrived and everything is so clean. Faultless stay for the week. We had a really comfortable time. I would both recommend this cottage again and again, and would imagine that I’ll be rebooking at some stage in the future.

Quakers cottage is homely and cosy - close to lots of fabulous areas moors and coast.

The badger hounds pub does the most fabulous food !! Nothing is too much for the owners who checked to see if we were warm enough! We love this place and have booked our return visit already.

Cottage was better than expected!

Perfectly clean and cosy! Double bed mattress was softer than we would be used to, so we used the single beds and they were great! Parking was great and less than a 1 minute walk, although there is also roadside parking. Home from home and the wifi was a nice added extra! We have even discussed returning next year we loved it that much

Quaker cottage as reviewed by many is absolutely perfect.

We (family of 3 with a 7 yr old) spent a very happy week in August with not 1 thing we could grumble let alone complain about. An ideal place for visiting Scarborough, Whitby, Saltburn as we did or for cliff top walks into Runswick bay or Staithes, a different beach every day with very little driving required. Port Mulgrave's a challenge you don't normally face when visiting the beach but all the better for it, we loved it. James the owner was very helpful and although we never met I had no doubts if needed he'd be there to sort any problems. Needless to say we'd happily return, thanks for the most hassle free holiday in years in a perfect English seaside cottage.

The cottage,owner and location was just lovely.

Ideal for a family stay on the Yorkshire coast. Best places to visit is Staithes, Runswick Bay, Robin HoodsBay and Whitbys Sandsend Beach. The accommodation is spacious, comfortable and very clean indeed. However the only negative point that is disappointing is that parking is away from the property. There is space situated near the cottage garage driveway and parking here would be much more beneficial to elderly or family's with push chairs. Possibly a consideration for the owners to make this cottage a perfect stay for all.

The cottage was spotlessly clean, well equipped and very comfortable.

We spent almost every day at either Staithes or Runswick Bay which are both very close with the odd trip into Whitby. Owners very friendly and available throughout the stay. My wife and I are already planning to stay there next year. Great Cottage.

Lovely cottage with every amenity provided.

The scenery of the North Yorkshire coast is stunning. Our hosts were friendly and welcoming and we will definitely return.

The cottage and its environment suited us perfectly.

The facilities and the people enabled us to further value the environments of the North Yorkshire Moors, its coast and its heritage. The abundance of the sounds of Spring, the flora and fauna were a delight. This was topped by the enjoyment of eating local fresh food!

We had a lovely week last week at the cottage despite the weather not being too great.

The cottage was warm and cosy for the 4 of us (with 2 children 5 and 2). We were made to feel very welcome and there was everything we needed as well as some very lovely surprises when we arrived at the cottage. The owners could not have been friendlier. A fantastic quaint little cottage lovely place to stay and fabulous owners who live next door and own the local butchers/village shop.

The "arrival pack" of some wine crisps and chocolate and milk in fridge for a cuppa was a delightful surprise. I would recommend Quakers Cottage without any reservation at all. We had an amazing week staying here and even the locals in brown cow pub made us feel welcome we didn't want to leave such a fantastic and friendly village.

All was good indeed much better than expected.

We booked for seven days but on the third day there was heavy snow so the owners allowed us to stay an extra two days so we did not have to attempt the long drive home whilst the roads were affected by snow. Marianne, the owners mother, who lived next door called on us every day to make sure we were OK, were warm enough and had sufficient supplies. they could not have been more helpful.

The cottage is beautiful in a fabulous location.

Lovely place. Whitby is a good day out and there is more if you go off the front. Little cobbled streets galore. Quaint little shops. Robin hoods bay is a beautiful place visit.. Sandsend beech is a nice walk and the cafes do lovely food. Altogether a wonderful break. Deb Leah and Marie say thank you to James and family.
